WUNDERLICH, 75334 Straubenhardt, Germany. Abstract: The fossil mygalomorph spiders (Araneae: Mygalomorpha) in Baltic and Do- minican amber are listed, a key to the taxa is given. Two species of the genus Ummidia THORELL 1875 (Ctenizidae: Pachylomerinae) in Baltic amber are redescribed, Clos- thes priscus MENGE 1869 (Dipluridae) from Baltic amber is revised, two gen. indet. (Dipluridae) fram Baltic amber are reported. The first fossil member of the family Micro- stigmatidae: Parvomygale n. gen., Parvomygale distineta n. sp. (Parvomygalinae n. subfarn.) in Dominican amber is described. - The taxon Micramygalinae PLATNICK & FORSTER 1982 is raised to family rank, revised diagnoses of the families Micromyga- lidae (no fossil record) and Micrastigmatidae are given. This spider is a member of the family Dipluridae (Funnelweb Mygalomorphs) and is redescribed in this paper; only juveniles are known. Two further species of Mygalomorpha are described from this kind of amber, these are members of the family Ctenizidae (Trapdoor spiders). - Fossil members of the Mygalo- morphae in Dominican amber were described by WUNDERLICH (1988). -

Spiders in South African cotton fields: species diversity and abundance (Arachnida: Araneae). African Plant Protection 5(2): 93-103. Spiders were collected from 1979 t01997 in five cotton-growing areas in South Africa. Thirty-one families, repre- sented by 92 genera and 127 species, were recorded. The Thomisidae were the richest in species (21) followed by the Araneidae (18) and Theridiidae (11). The most abundant spider species were Pardosa crasslpalpis Purcell (Lycosidae), Enoplognatha sp. (Theridiidae), Eperigone fradeorum (Berland) (Linyphiidae) and Misumenops rubrodecorata Millot (Thomisidae). Wandering spiders constituted 61.5 % and web-builders 38.5 % of all spiders collected. Information on guilds, relative abundance and distribution are provided for each species in an annotated checklist. Spiders 'are common and occur in high numbers in cotton fields and prey on a variety of cotton pests. Although spiders probably are incapable of controlling major pest outbreaks by themselves their role in a complex predatory community may be important in regulating pest species at low densities early in the season and between peaks of pest species activity. A total of 11 470 records from more than 900 point localities were sampled in the 6 South African Grassland Biome until the end of 2011, representing 58 families, 275 genera 7 and 792 described species. A further five families (Chummidae, Mysmenidae, Orsolobidae, 8 Symphytognathidae and Theridiosomatidae) have been recorded from the biome but are only 9 known from undescribed species. The most frequently recorded families are the Gnaphosidae 10 (2504 records), Salticidae (1500 records) and Thomisidae (1197 records). The last decade has 11 seen an exponential growth in the knowledge of spiders in South Africa, but there are 12 certainly many more species that still have to be discovered and described. The most species- 13 rich families are the Salticidae (112 spp.), followed by the Gnaphosidae (88 spp.), 14 Thomisidae (72 spp.) and Araneidae (52 spp.). A rarity index, taking into account the 15 endemicity index and an abundance index, was determined to give a preliminary indication of 16 the conservation importance of each species. -

Dippenaar e-mail: [email protected] Postal Address: Private Bag X1106, Sovenga 0727, Republic of South Africa ABSTRACT As part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA), spiders were collected from all the field layers in the Polokwane Nature Reserve (Limpopo Province, South Africa) over a period of a year (2005–2006) using four collecting methods. Six habitat types were sampled: Acacia tortillis open savanna; A. rehmanniana woodland, false grassland, riverine and sweet thorn thicket, granite outcrop; and Aloe marlothii thicket. A total of 13 821 spiders were collected (using sweep netting, tree beating, active searching and pitfall trapping) represented by 39 families, 156 determined genera and 275 species. The most diverse families are the Thomisidae (42 spp.), Araneidae (39 spp.) and Salticidae (29 spp.). A total of 84 spp. (30.5%) were web builders and 191 spp. (69.5%) wanderers. In the Polokwane Nature Reserve, 13.75% of South African species are presently protected. A List of Spider Species Found in the Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa
KOEDOE - African Protected Area Conservation and Science ISSN: (Online) 2071-0771, (Print) 0075-6458 Page 1 of 13 Checklist A list of spider species found in the Addo Elephant National Park, Eastern Cape province, South Africa Authors: The knowledge of spiders in the Eastern Cape province lags behind that of most other South Anna S. Dippenaar- African provinces. The Eastern Cape province is renowned for its conservation areas, as the Schoeman1,2 Linda Wiese3 largest part of the Albany Centre of Endemism falls within this province. This article provides Stefan H. Foord4 a checklist for the spider fauna of the Addo Elephant National Park, one of the most prominent Charles R. Haddad5 conservation areas of the Eastern Cape, to detail the species found in the park and determine their conservation status and level of endemicity based on their known distribution. Various Affiliations: 1Biosystematics: Arachnology, collecting methods were used to sample spiders between 1974 and 2016. Forty-seven families ARC – Plant Health and that include 184 genera and 276 species were recorded. Three new species in previously known genera are described: Taintnops paposo sp. n. from Chile, and the Brazilian Tisentnops mineiro sp. n. and Tisentnops onix sp. n., both belonging to a genus known only from its damaged type. Additionally, two new non–nopine Brazilian genera are proposed: Nasutonops gen. n. including three new species: N. chapeu sp. n., N. sincora sp. n. and N. xaxado sp. n.; and Carajas gen. n., known only from the type species C. paraua sp. n. Both new genera have entire, rather than sub-segmented tarsi. -

South Africa is not immune from such threats and it is estimated that 10 million ha (8.28 %) of land has been invaded to some extent by invasive alien species. Although South Africa has been invaded by several taxa, it is the effect of invasive trees and shrubs that has been environmentally and economically most damaging. The concerns raised due to the effects of biological invasion are not only restricted to off-reserve areas, but also protected areas where invasive alien organisms often pose a greater threat than habitat loss. Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa‟s flagship conservation area has been invaded by numerous plant taxa. The most damaging of these is Opuntia stricta (Cactaceae) and current sources estimate that the weed has invaded approximately 35 000 ha of conserved land, despite the initiation of a biological control programme against it.
