    © Lonely Planet 212 Wester Ross Wester Ross is heaven for hillwalkers: a remote and starkly beautiful part of the High- lands with lonely glens and lochs, an intricate coastline of rocky headlands and white-sand beaches, and some of the finest mountains in Scotland. If you are lucky with the weather, the clear air will provide rich colours and great views from the ridges and summits. In poor conditions the remoteness of the area makes walking a much more serious proposition. Whatever the weather, the walking can be difficult, so this is no place to begin learning mountain techniques. But if you are fit and well equipped, Wester Ross will be immensely rewarding – and addictive. The walks described here offer a tantalising taste of the area’s delights and challenges. An Teallach’s pinnacle-encrusted ridge is one of Scotland’s finest ridge walks, spiced with some scrambling. Proving that there’s much more to walking in Scotland than merely jumping out of the car (or bus) and charging up the nearest mountain, Beinn Dearg Mhór, in the heart of the Great Wilderness, makes an ideal weekend outing. This Great Wilderness – great by Scottish standards at least – is big enough to guarantee peace, even solitude, during a superb two-day traverse through glens cradling beautiful lochs. Slioch, a magnificent peak overlooking Loch Maree, offers a comparatively straightforward, immensely scenic ascent.     Access and Transport Baseline Report 2019 Produced as part of the Wester Ross Destination Development Plan preliminary research Context Upwards of an estimated c.100,000 tourists visit Wester Ross each year, sustaining local communities through their input to the local economy and tourism accounts for 35% of employment[1]. However, in the current climate (Summer 2019) there are concerns that a rise in tourism of up to 27% (estimate[2]) over the past few years may not be sustainable. Although a different perspective is that this has followed a deep recession in the tourism industry and visitor numbers have yet to return to the high levels enjoyed during the 1990s, the current situation is exacerbated by Local Authority and Public Agency budget cuts which have resulted in plans to close public toilets and a deterioration in road quality. In addition, the type of visitor has changed, Wester Ross is welcoming large amounts of campervans which require waste disposal facilities which are not yet in place. Local people are reporting over-flowing carparks and bins, increasing litter pollution and irresponsible behaviour. It is not unusual for local residents to cite increased litter as a negative aspect of tourism[3] and this together with other perceived negative impacts can become challenging to tourism development as the host community begin to view visitors less than favourably. Therefore, the World Tourism Organisation advises regions to adopt a model for tourism management which considers the social as well as economical and environmental impacts of tourism[4]. Mass tourism is not going away[5]. But currently, there is no hard-empirical evidence on visitor numbers, expectations and behaviour or condition of assets in Wester Ross which would allow communities, businesses, local authorities and public agencies to plan proactively.

Some people complain that there is nothing to do, but there are many clubs and societies operating throughout the week. So it is hoped in this magazine that all these activities are suitably covered showing what a wide variety there really is. The Magazine is essentially the same as last year’s. Many say the trouble with it is that it is always the same as the year before’s. Yet o f all the moaners not one has come forward with any sane ideas, so the magazine stays the same— or nearly so. Obviously these people are fooled by the conservative cover, the small print and the lack of photographs (though there are more this year). If they just bothered to do a little reading they would see that the magazine is full of interesting and entertaining articles. O f course there are the same articles which have been in the magazine for the last fifty years but in this age of change perhaps a little conservatism is a good thing.

Caird In the last two centuries kelp and fisheries, sheep farms, crofts, clearances, emigration and deer forests are the main developments which have contributed to the cultural landscape of the Highlands and Islands. The creation of crofts from Kintyre in Argyllshire to Unst in Shetland resulted in the formation of a distinctive landscape, settlement pattern and distribution of population, with the crofting population occupying small lots almost exclusively round the coast, except in the eastern parts of Inverness-shire, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland and in Caithness and Orkney where the Old Red Sandstone provides potential arable land beyond the coastal fringe.

    ROADS in the GAIRLOCH AREA Until the 19th century there were no built roads in the Gairloch area, but only tracks and footpaths worn by human or animal feet (e.g. droving routes, peat roads). There were no wheeled vehicles; goods might be carried on the back in “creels” or pulled on sledges behind a horse. O On land, even horse-riding was difficult (see 1649). Some tracks may have been improved quite early (e.g. Flowerdale to Slattadale, Gairloch to Poolewe), and cattle droving must have created well-worn routes, but nothing suitable for wheeled vehicles existed until the mid-19th century. At that time, ironically, a time of poverty caused by potato blight led to the first proper road system (see 1846 to 1859). The easiest way of travelling was by water. Most visitors came by sea, and Loch Maree (an increasingly famous beauty spot) was usually traversed by boat, with access at Tollie Bay (for Poolewe), Slattadale or Talladale (for Gairloch) and Rhu Noa (for Kinlochewe). It seems that boats were sometimes brought from the sea up the River Ewe to Loch Maree (see 1580 and 1834): presumably this means towed overland, since the river is (as described by Thomas Pennant in 1774) “a continuous Rapide”, and Dixon mentions a tradition that there was a 17th century plan by the Sir George Hay to dig a canal between Lochs Ewe and Maree, to help with his iron-smelting industry.     Wester Ross National Scenic Area Revised Draft Management Strategy November 2002 IMPORTANT PREFACE This draft document was considered by the Ross and Cromarty Area Planning Committee on 11th February 2003. At that time it was agreed that – X Efforts should be continued with Scottish Natural Heritage and the Wester Ross Alliance to progress and deliver a number of immediate projects, and that the forthcoming preparation of the Wester Ross Local Plan should be used to progress some of the policy oriented actions arising out of the Management Strategy; and that X Efforts are made with Dumfries and Galloway Council together with Scottish Natural Heritage to lobby the Scottish Executive to formally respond to the 1999 SNH Advice to Government on National Scenic Areas, to reaffirm its support for NSAs/Management Strategies, and to take action itself to positively influence policy and resources in favour of NSAs. Following further consideration at the Council’s West Coast Sub Committee on 1st April 2003 the draft document was considered further by the Ross and Cromarty Area Committee on 7th April 2003. At that time it was agreed that – X Any decision on the adoption of the Management Strategy should be deferred pending consideration of the Wester Ross Local Plan review. Therefore this draft document has not been adopted or approved by The Highland Council. It will be considered further by the Council at a later date in the context of the policy coverage of the replacement Wester Ross Local Plan. In the meantime the document was accepted and approved by Scottish Natural Heritage at the meeting of the North Areas Board on 21st November 2002.

    Crofts Nos. 16 & 17 North Erradale 16 North Erradale April 1911 Garage and house 16 North Erradale 1920s Family History of Crofts 16 & 17 The Mckenzie family moved to, and became tenants of, crofts 16 and 17 North Erradale in 1892. Prior to this the McDonald family were tenants of the crofts. Murdo (Lad) Mckenzie and his wife Margaret (maiden surname Maclean) were not from Gairloch. Murdo came from Aultbea, and Margaret was born in Elgin, but her family moved to Tournaig prior to 1871 where her father was a Sheep Manager. Margaret’s sister Isabella married Donald Urquhart of Kernsary, who was Stalker to Osgood Mackenzie. Murdo and Margaret Mckenzie previously lived in Charleston (Bakehouse and Shop) where Murdo ran a General Merchants store, but he was also a mail driver to Aultbea. He got “fed up of the early starts, so decided to take over 2 crofts in North Erradale”. They probably moved into an already existing house, previously occupied by the MacDonald family. Both Nos 16 and 15 North Erradale were upgraded to 2 storey houses at around the same time in the 1920, probably 1924. The first picture on the cover is dated 1911 on the back, and building has started on the Post Office building, to the left of the house. The house is said to have been upgraded one half at a time, and a room was built onto the end of the byre (which the McKenzies called the “room out”) where the family slept whilst the house was being rebuilt. The house did not have a proper kitchen to begin with, and everything was cooked on the”Range” in the present sitting room.
