Hymn

How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I?

1 Thy brightness unto them appears, while I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face: I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite.

Enlighten with faith’s light my heart, inflame it with love’s fire, then shall I sing and take my part with that celestial choir. They sing, because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun, there alleluias be.

How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep: Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere.

Words: John Mason (1646-1694) Music: Ken Naylor (1931-1991) Descant: Katherine Dienes-Williams (b 1970)

Welcome and Bidding

The Acting Dean welcomes the congregation.

On behalf of the Chapter and Cathedral community, may I welcome you all here today.

We are gathered together with joy and anticipation to welcome Dianna to this Cathedral Church as our Dean, and to the Diocese as its senior priest. We greet Martin, Dianna’s husband; her children Michael and Sarah, with Becky and Dave, and her wider and extended family; we look forward to sharing the life of this place with them all.

Most of all we are here to ask God’s blessing on Dianna’s new ministry among us. Let us therefore be silent and remember God’s presence with us now.

A short silence follows.

2 Versicles and Responses Bernard Rose (1916-96)

Priest O Lord, open thou our lips. Choir And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. Priest O God, make speed to save us. Choir O Lord, make haste to help us. Priest Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; Choir As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Priest Praise ye the Lord. Choir The Lord’s name be praised.

The congregation sits for the psalm, sung by the choir.

Psalm 122

1 I was glad when they said unto me : We will go into the house of the Lord. 2 Our feet shall stand in thy gates : O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built as a city : that is at unity in itself. 4 For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord : to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord. 5 For there is the seat of judgement : even the seat of the house of David. 6 O pray for the peace of Jerusalem : they shall prosper that love thee. 7 Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces. 8 For my brethren and companions’ sakes : I will wish thee prosperity. 9 Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God : I will seek to do thee good. Stand Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

Hymn

O thou who camest from above the fire celestial to impart kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart!

There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire to work, and speak, and think for thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up the gift in me.

Ready for all thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat; till death thy endless mercies seal, and make the sacrifice complete.

Magnificat

The Jesus Service William Mathias (1934-92)

My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

Hymn

Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey and companions on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I’ll laugh with you;

12 I will share your joy and sorrow till we’ve seen this journey through. When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

The Welcome

Bishop Today, we welcome Dianna Gwilliams as Dean of the Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit, Guildford. For Cathedral and Diocese this is a day of celebration, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the ministry of the Mother Church of the Diocese. With her colleagues, both lay and ordained, Dianna will seek to uphold this Church as a focus for worship and mission.

13 The ministry of the Cathedral touches the life of the wider community at many points. The new Dean will strive to work in appropriate ways with our ecumenical partners and those of other faiths; with the University of Surrey and other educational foundations; and with those who hold public office in Surrey and North-East Hampshire. Together, we can support and enrich one another’s work, and care for our neighbours.

It is a joy to have representatives of these various groups with us today, and I now invite them to come forward and welcome the new Dean.

Welcomes are then given by

Dame Sarah Goad, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, representing the county and civic communities

Professor Michael J. Kearney, Vice-President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, representing The University of Surrey

Canon Nick Whitehead and Mrs Anne Martin, Vice-Presidents of the Diocesan Synod, representing the Diocese of Guildford

The Reverend Phillip Jones, Minister, Guildford United Reformed Church, representing ecumenical partners

Sonia Bennett, Chair of the Cathedral Community Committee, representing the Cathedral congregation

The Bishop says words in conclusion.

The Hymn follows, during which a collection will be taken for the support of the Cathedral’s ministry. Tax-payers are encouraged to use the envelopes provided and complete the brief details required, so that the Cathedral can reclaim tax.

Hymn

O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou for ever near me, my Master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

14

O let me feel thee near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.

O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee, that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be; and, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end: O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.

O let me see thy foot-marks, and in them plant mine own; my hope to follow duly is in thy strength alone: O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my Friend.
