Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I? 1 Thy brightness unto them appears, while I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face: I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. Enlighten with faith’s light my heart, inflame it with love’s fire, then shall I sing and take my part with that celestial choir. They sing, because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun, there alleluias be. How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep: Thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. Words: John Mason (1646-1694) Music: Ken Naylor (1931-1991) Descant: Katherine Dienes-Williams (b 1970) Welcome and Bidding The Acting Dean welcomes the congregation. On behalf of the Chapter and Cathedral community, may I welcome you all here today. We are gathered together with joy and anticipation to welcome Dianna to this Cathedral Church as our Dean, and to the Diocese as its senior priest. We greet Martin, Dianna’s husband; her children Michael and Sarah, with Becky and Dave, and her wider and extended family; we look forward to sharing the life of this place with them all. Most of all we are here to ask God’s blessing on Dianna’s new ministry among us. Let us therefore be silent and remember God’s presence with us now. A short silence follows. 2 Versicles and Responses Bernard Rose (1916-96) Priest O Lord, open thou our lips. Choir And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. Priest O God, make speed to save us. Psalm 122 1 I was glad when they said unto me : We will go into the house of the Lord. 2 Our feet shall stand in thy gates : O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built as a city : that is at unity in itself. 4 For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord : to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord. 5 For there is the seat of judgement : even the seat of the house of David. 6 O pray for the peace of Jerusalem : they shall prosper that love thee. 7 Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces. 8 For my brethren and companions’ sakes : I will wish thee prosperity. 9 Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God : I will seek to do thee good. Stand Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. The congregation sits. The First Lesson Isaiah 60: 1-5 and 19-21 Lady Toulson, Chair of the Cathedral Council The congregation stands. 3 During the hymn, the Lord-Lieutenant and Dean-Designate are conducted to stand before the Bishop. Hymn O thou who camest from above the fire celestial to impart kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart! There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer and fervent praise. Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire to work, and speak, and think for thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up the gift in me. Ready for all thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat; till death thy endless mercies seal, and make the sacrifice complete. Text: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876) The choir and congregation sit. The Chancellor reads the Letters Patent and then places them on the altar. 4 Bishop Dianna, we greet you in the name of the Lord. Before we proceed to your institution and installation, pray with us that God will bless your ministry in this Cathedral Church and Diocese, and that he will equip you with the gifts you need to serve him and his people with faithfulness, understanding and integrity. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. Where charity and love are, God is there also. We gather here in the love of Christ. Let us rejoice and be glad in that love itself. We revere and love the living God. Let us love from a pure heart. Amen. Prayer and anointing Bishop Eternal God, whose we are and whom we serve: we pray for this Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit, that it may be a house of prayer in which your word is diligently proclaimed and your sacraments faithfully administered; bless all who minister here, especially your servant Dianna, that this place may be a beacon of light in a dark world, a sign of hope to the needy and encouragement to pilgrims; we ask it through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. 5 The Bishop blesses and anoints the Dean-Designate. Bishop Dianna, may the Lord sustain you in all your works and in all your ways, make you humble, just and true, and strengthen you in holiness and righteousness. May he anoint you with the oil of gladness that you may fulfil the ministry to which he has called you: and may the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. All Amen. THE INSTITUTION AND INSTALLATION The Declarations Bishop Let the Declaration of Assent be made and subscribed, and the necessary oaths be taken. The Church of England is part of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care? Declaration of Assent Dean- I, Dianna Lynn Gwilliams, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the Designate faith which is revealed in the holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness: and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.
