I also spoke to members of the influential think tank, the European Policy Centre (EPC) on the topic - ‘Preparing for Brexit in the absence of Ministers’. It is clear from the numbers who attended the hour long session and the questions asked, that there is still considerable goodwill towards Northern Ireland. There was also a clear understanding of Northern Ireland’s unique position in the ongoing negotiations, as the only part of the UK with a land border to another EU member state. In my speech I said there is a real concern about the risk that no deal is reached and there is a chaotic exit from the EU. The comments reflect the view from many stakeholders across society who have engaged with the civil service as part of our preparations for leaving the EU.
