PRESIDENT‘S MESSAGE

Hello Bluegrass compatriots,

Welcome to the 2011 Festivals Issue of our BMACC publication. BMACC is Bluegrass Central! This is likely the last issue you will receive, before we go on to be- come a national bluegrass organization. Yes, the papers are filed, and we will soon be the Bluegrass Music Association of Cana- da, dropping Central from our name. BMACC members in good AND THE WINNER IS: Well, funny story here—the winner was standing, need not do a thing; nothing is changing except our Arla Blakney! Arla Blakney won the draw we held in Thonrnhill. name. If you are not currently a member of this ever growing blue- Since she is in the concert committee in the Essex club, she had no grass movement, don‘t wait any longer. BMAC will continue to be bluegrass central for fans, bands, clubs and promoters! use for the ticket, and graciously gave it up as a door prize during the Spinney Bros. concert in February. The ultimate recipient was Felicia Abela. Felicia and a friend will enjoy an evening of Blue- If you are organizing a bluegrass event, concert, or festival, be sure grass with Charlie Sizemore. to go to our website and submit the particulars for FREE!!! Your listing will be seen by a ready-made bluegrass target audience… another reason why BMACC (or BMAC)…is bluegrass central.

This grassroots organization is comprised entirely of a volunteer board, and we are always looking for folks, like you, to lend a hand. This can be as simple as sitting at one of our tables at a festival for an hour or two. Hey, if your going to be there anyway, we‘d be much obliged.

Congratulations to Arla (Blakeny), the winner of our free ticket give- away. We are pleased to reward our members, with benefits that far exceed the cost of membership.

Looks like we have a fabulous year of festivals coming-up, and a great many step dance & competitions, along with numerous events that have reconnected with their bluegrass roots. (Heck, country was bluegrass music, prior to the ‗60s.) SPINNEY BROTHERS RECEIVING COPY OF BMACC NOTES Okay, time to confess my sins…when I goof, I can only admit it, and pray for forgiveness. In my farewell to the Northern Sons in the last issue, I inadvertently wrote the name of their mandolin player as John Henry, instead of Bill Henry. Given that John Henry is a timeless bluegrass standard, I was thinking about the song, while typing Bill‘s name. Sorry brother. Such is the result of having blue- grass hardwired into my brain…

So folks, get out there and have a wonderful summer, and let blue- grass be the sound track that plays throughout. Out door festivals are still the best bargain around. Travel safe and keep smiling!

Warm regards, Denis Chadbourn

Www.northernbluegrass.com RUSSELL MOORE & IIIRD TYME OUT (Article reproduced with permission) WINTER CONCERT TOUR

Success for 'Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out' was nearly an overnight occurrence for this group after its forming in 1991. Led by the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) 2-time "Male Vocal- ist Of The Year", Russell Moore, IIIrd Tyme Out, consisting of Moore (guitar), Steve Dilling (banjo), Justen Haynes (fiddle), Wayne Benson (mandolin), and Edgar Loudermilk (bass), has walked away with IBMA's "Vocal Group Of The Year" award 7 consecutive years. All in all, the band has garnered 50 industry awards since their inception in 1991. Their a cappella renditions of many songs, featuring one of the most respected lead vocalists of all time, can rarely be matched and their superb instrumen- tation, from some of the best musicians in the business, provides even more quality sound to their rich vocal blend. All this along with a heavy touring schedule, including many performances on the Grand Ole Opry as well as GAC and RFD channel programs, over 14 recordings to date, and a desire to pre- sent their fans with the best music possible, makes this "supergroup" one of bluegrass music's most recognized and in-demand bands in the genre's history. 'Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out' - Where did such a name have its origin? The name wittingly refer- ences that this was the third time out for founding member Moore, and consequently the third profes- sional bluegrass band association for him. No doubt, the third time has proven to be a charm.

Respected writer and musician Chris Stuart, in his perceptive liner notes for Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out's Rounder records release 'Footprints: A IIIrd Tyme Out Collection' writes, "IIIrd Tyme Out has their own brand of bluegrass: unmatched quartets and trios, masterful lead singing, dead-on rhythm, tasteful fills, lyrical solos, and great songs. From stage left to right they are a complete band – perhaps the most complete band of the past two decades."

Editor’s Message – Leann Chadbourn Spring has sprung and many of you are getting itchy for the Festival season. We at BMACC NOTES have tried to include as many of the upcoming Festivals as possible. If any have been missed please send me an email so we can include them next year. This Quarters publication includes the first in a series of articles from Gary Hubbard, entitled Music Biz . As well as an Article, entitled Just a Bluegrass Wife, by Diana Willis Van Holten. Hopefully, Diana will see fit to continue providing us with her interesting stories, adventures and experiences as a ―Bluegrass Wife‖. Larry Johnston also provided us with an article on the Waterloo/Wellington Bluegrass Music Asso- ciation, entitled Birth of A Bluegrass Club. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of the NOTES and once again remind all of you to write in to share your adventures with us.

MUSIC “BIZ” Article #1

The one constant in the business of music that survives changes in media is the writing of a song. When a song has been composed by one or more individuals, a copyright has been created. (It is important that each writer’s share is documented to avoid any future disputes in the sharing of revenues.) Term of copy- right varies by country and can be researched at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries’_copyright_length In Canada, this term is currently Life + 50 years.

The Songwriters Association of Canada (SAC) is a non-profit organization that provides support to composers including; seminars, workshops, newsletters and registration of a song under their “Canadian Song Vault Program”. If an individual is serious about trying to create a “business” from their songwriting , joining this association is highly recommended. http://www.songwriters.ca

Creating a “business” for a song (rather than a hobby), is dependent on “consumer demand” for the song and a significant “volume” of royalties from the exploitation of the song.

Exploitation can be derived from: Live performance Inclusion on an audio devise and/or download from the internet Licensing for use in a film or television production Sheet Music

Since most musicians do not have the time or know-how to actively exploit their compositions a partnership with a “Music Publisher” is created. Basically, “I’ll write the songs”, you exploit them and we’ll share the reve- nues 50/50.

In the next issue, we’ll look at “Live Performance” and the function of a “Performance Rights Organization” which in Canada is “SOCAN”

Birth of Bluegrass Club by Larry Johnston

It was one of those moments in time. A time when the stars and planets are aligned in the heavens. A time when the lives of sev- eral people converge. Or, it could have been the fact that the only local bar with bluegrass music decided to pull the plug. In the fall of 2009, that is what occurred in the Kitchener/Cambridge area of Southern Ontario. And that was the catalyst that prompted six friends to gather around a kitchen table in Kitchener and start a new bluegrass club in the Oompah capital of Canada.

Looking back, it’s odd that we didn’t think of this idea much earlier. Our musical paths have been crossing for years. Some of us even discovered Bluegrass together while in our twenties. But that night the Waterloo-Wellington Bluegrass Music Association was born out of the idea of providing a place for people to pick a few tunes and enjoy each other’s company during the Bluegrass off-season.

After weeks of discussions, planning and leg work, a ‘Bluegrass Jam’ was started in the Army, Navy, Airforce Club in Kitchener. There were 45 pickers that showed up at that first jam. Forty-Five! Where the heck did these people come from? There were three separate jams going on at the same time. In a single room! A very small, single room. Needless to say, it was not pretty, but it sure was fun.

This first jam brought about two revelations to the executive committee. First, there should be a ‘slow jam’ for beginners. And second, we need a much bigger place!

The bigger place arrived in the form of the Galt Legion, Branch 121 in Cambridge. With its 6 separate jam areas, it has been the answer to a Bluegrasser’s dream. The new place and a new night didn’t hurt attendance any. The club averages about 30 pickers a week, plus a few listeners. Some of the pickers drive for over an hour to attend. The ‘Slow and Easy’ jams are mediated by a mem- ber of the executive committee and are always well attended. Monthly workshops covering each of the bluegrass instruments,as well as vocal and jamming workshop have helped maintain the interest of players of every skill level.

Attendance at the club Christmas party has almost doubled between the first and second year, jumping from 50 to 95 people. This year’s party featured a pot luck supper, door prizes and draw for festival tickets. Entertainment was provided by those attending the party, in the form of band scrambles.

The fall of 2010 was very special for the club executive. The WWBMA is now the sponsor for the Bass Player of the Year at the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards (thank-you Tony de Boer) in memory of Guy Tellier, a brother and friend to many of the club executive and those who attend the weekly jam.

The Waterloo-Wellington Bluegrass Music Association jam is every Tuesday night starting on the 2nd week of September and run- ning until late June. The ‘Slow and Easy’ jam starts at 7:00 pm and runs till 8:30 pm. Open jams run from 7:00 pm until 11:00 pm. Look for the club banner at a festival near you or stay in touch with us on Facebook. Better yet, keep an eye out for any of the members of the executive committee. They are:
