FMD eradication. a) History. Chronology of the FMD cases and outbreaks in the country. Ø On 5th of January 2011 -date of first case of FMD in one wild boar shot on 30 December 2010 about 2 km north from the Turkish border in the vicinity of the village of Kosti (Tsarevo municipality, Burgas region). Ø On 9th of January in the village of Kosti (IP-1), Tsarevo municipality, in the vicinity of the place were the wild boar was shot; Ø On 15th of January in the village of Rezovo (IP-2), Tsarevo municipality, located southeast of Kosti at the border with Turkey; Ø On 31st of January in the village Gramatikovo (IP-3), Malko Tarnovo municipality, situated 10 km west of Kosti within the surveillance zone around IP-1 in Kosti; Ø On 19th of March in a bovine farm nearby the village of Kirovo (IP-4), Sredets municipality, 7 km north of the border with Turkey; Ø On 24th of March in the village of Granichar (IP-5),Sredets municipality, 3 km north of the border with Turkey; Ø On 25th of March o in a mixed bovine and pig farm nearby the village of Goliamo Bukovo (IP-6), Sredets municipality, 5 km northeast of IP-4, within the surveillance zone around the Kirovo outbreak; o in a bovine farm nearby the village of Fakia (IP-7), Sredets municipality, west of the Kirovo outbreak, 10 km north of the border with Turkey; o in a bovine farm nearby the village of Momina Tsarkva (IP-8), Sredets municipality west of IP-7, 6 km north of the border with Turkey; Ø On 3rd of April o in the village of Bliznak (IP-9), Malko Tarnovo municipality 7 km north of the border with Turkey; o in a grazing buffalo herd 2 km south of Bliznak village (IP-10), Malko Tarnovo municipality in about 5 km north of the border with Turkey; Ø On 7th of April in Dolno Yabalkovo (IP-11), Sredets municipality in village herd of sheep, goats and a bovine. 3 Bulgaria Black sea 7 4 6 9 8 11 5 10 3 1 2 WB Turkey Greece Figure 1. Dolno Yabalkovo b) Chronology of the events, strategy and applied measures related to the control and eradication of FMD in all outbreaks 05.01.2011 On 30.12.2010 three wild boars were shot 2 km north from the Turkish border in the area of Makevtci, on the land of Kosti village (Tsarevo municipality, Burgas region) (see Figure 1). Acute clinical signs for FMD in the feet (coronary band of claws) only in one of the 3 wild boar have been observed. Samples ( tissue samples) from the 3 wild boar were tested on 4.01.2011 by lateral flow device for FMDV-antigen detection, Ag ELISA- type O and RT PCR-real time Ø The samples only from one of tested wild boar showed positive results, as follow:Lateral flow device for FMDV-antigen detection- positive; Ø Ag ELISA- type O - positive; Ø RT PCR-real time- protocols by Scott Read and Kalahan- positive for presence of the FMD viral genome. On 5 January 2011 the first case of FMD in one wild boar was declared. On 07.01.2011 the samples were sent to of the EU Reference Laboratory (EU-RL), Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright, United Kingdom, for confirmation and isolation virus. The analysis made from the samples (WB)indicate this FMD virus is a serotype O, Topotype ME- SA, Strain PanAsia-2ANT-10 which has more than 99.5% affinity with isolates collected in 2010 in Iran and Turkey. 4 05.01.2011 Start the implementation of the measures for control and eradication of FMD according to Council Directive 2003/85/EC. Portection (3km) and surveillance (10 km) zones were established around Kosti and clinical and epidemiological examinations as well as blood sampling of susceptible animals in all villages located in the municipalities of Tsarevo, Malko Tarnovo and Sredets. (samples in tables in Annex II). 08.01.2011 By COMMISSION DECISION 2011/8/EU of 6 January 2011 concerning certain interim protection measures against foot-and-mouth disease in Bulgaria, some regions of the country were separated as a zone with high risk Annex I (the entire region of Burgas) and zones with low risk Annex II (the regions of Yambol, Sliven, Shumen and Varna). No susceptible animals were allowed to move from these zones to other territories of Bulgaria. No FMD susceptible animals and products thereof could leave the territories of Annex I. Decision 2011/8/EU Figure 2 Annex I and Annex II areas accroding to Decision 2011/8/EU 09.01.2011 On 09.01.2011 the National Reference laboratory (NRL) for FMD confirmed positive for NSP ELISA and antibodies FMD type O ELISA blood samples taken on 07-08.01.2011 during surveillance activities (Figure 4 (b) in animals from Kosti (Tsarevo municipality, Burgas region). The results are as follow: Cattle - 1 positive for NSP ELISA and antibodies FMD type O ELISA Sheep – 14 positives for NSP ELISA and antibodies FMD type O ELISA Goats – 12 positives for NSP ELISA tests and antibodies FMD type O ELISA Pigs – 8 positives for NSP ELISA The Veterinary service (National Veterinary Service (NVS) started the implementation of the measures for the control and eradication of FMD according to Council Directive 2003/85/EC, namely: 5 - On 10.01.2011 by Order of the Director General of NVS, establishment of the 3 km protective and 10 km surveillance zones around Kosti village and the relevant restrictive measures were imposed. By Order of the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) (BFSA is a newly established agency, in operation since March 2011, wich included all structures of the NVS) on 04.07.2011 the 3 km protective and 10 km surveillance zones were removed. - On 10.01.2011 by Order of the Director General of NVS, NVS started killing of all susceptible animals in the village of Kosti. The killing of animals took 3 days, because of difficulties to round up 2 free range cattle herds. - Cleaning and disinfection on the spot. After killing of animals. The empty farms, animal holdings, backyards, roads, pastures were disinfected several times. - On 10.01.2011 start of the clinical examination and blood sampling in the village in the 3 km protective and 10 km surveillance zones around Kosti. Map of the outbreak, the villages in 3 km protective and 10 km surveillance zones, the number of animals present in the villages, and the serological surveillance are listed in Annex I 15.01.2011 Since the confirmation of FMD in wild boar on 05.01.11 NVS started clinical and epidemiological examinations as well as blood sampling of susceptible animals in all villages located in the municipalities of Tsarevo, Malko Tarnovo and Sredets in Burgas region.

    Ordinanza dell’USAV che istituisce provvedimenti per evitare l’introduzione dell’influenza aviaria dalla Bulgaria del 16 febbraio 2015 L’Ufficio federale della sicurezza alimentare e di veterinaria (USAV), visto l’articolo 24 capoverso 3 lettera a della legge del 1° luglio 19661 sulle epizoozie; visto l’articolo 33 capoverso 2 lettere a e c dell’ordinanza del 18 aprile 20072 concernente l’importazione, il transito e l’esportazione di animali e prodotti animali, ordina: Art. 1 Scopo e oggetto 1 La presente ordinanza si prefigge di evitare l’introduzione dell’influenza aviaria in Svizzera. 2 Essa disciplina l’importazione di carni di pollame non trattate termicamente, uova da tavola non trattate termicamente, pollame vivo, pulcini di un giorno, uova da cova, carni fresche, preparati e prodotti a base di carni di selvaggina da penna selva- tica e sottoprodotti di origine animale dalla Bulgaria. Art. 2 Importazione di carni di pollame non trattate termicamente L’importazione di carni di pollame non trattate termicamente provenienti dalla zona di protezione della Bulgaria definita nell’allegato 1 numero 1.1 è vietata. Art. 3 Importazione di uova da tavola non trattate termicamente L’importazione di uova da tavola non trattate termicamente provenienti dalle aree ad alto rischio della Bulgaria elencate nell’allegato 1 è vietata. Known localities of the Acta zool. bulg., 57 (2), 2005: 131-138 most local and rare longhorn beetles are pointed by literature data in the Discussion section. Biological material is kept in the entomological collection of the Forest Research Institute in Sofia. New and Interesting Records of Longhorn Beetles Results (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Some Bulgarian In this study many longhorn beetles were collected from different mountains in Bulgaria. Among them, the following twenty-eight records from four subfamilies were the most Mountains interesting: Lepturinae Georgi Georgiev1, Nikolai Simov2, Anelia Stojanova3, Danail Doychev4 Anastrangalia sanguinolenta (L INNAEUS, 1761) Abstract: Longhorn beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in Bulgarian Mountains were stud- Material examined: 1 ex., Pirin Mts., Orelyak Reserve above the Breznitsa vill., ied during the period 2000-2004. As a result, many species were collected, twenty-eight 1300 m, 19.08.2004. records of which belonging to 24 genera and 4 subfamilies (Lepturinae, Spondylidinae, Anoplodera rufipes (SCHALLER, 1783) Cerambycinae, and Lamiinae) are most interesting. Twenty-three cerambycids are new Material examined: 1 ex., Lyulin Mts., opposite to the Vladaya vill., 800 m, records for the Strandzha Mts., the Vitosha Mts., the Pirin Mts., the Lyulin Mts., the Sakar 26.05.2004. Mts., the Slavianka Mts., the Rila Mts., and the Balkan Range. Eleven longhorn beetles are Leptura quadrifasciata L , 1758 local and very rare in Bulgaria. Nine species were reared from host plants. The developed program aims to ensure the sustainable competitiveness of the Strandja fest region as a tourist destination, to support the sustainable development of the tourism industry, to rely as much as possible on the information obtained from the studies, reports, analyzes prepared within the project “Strandja – the mountain of festivals” funded under INTERREG Program IPA CBC Bulgaria - Turkey 2014-2020. This program takes into account the expectations and intentions of all stakeholders and is in line with the requirements for creating a correct, realistic and stable positioning of the Strandja fest region. I. ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT SITUATION AND TRENDS IN THE SOCIO- ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF STRANDJA FEST REGION 1. A general characteristic of the region The region to the north is limited by Middle and Eastern Stara Planina, to the east - to the Black Sea, to the south - the StrandJa Mountain, the Dervent Heights and the Sakar Mountains. Here are situated the eastern part of the Upper Thracian Plain, part of the sub-Balkan valleys, the Burgas Lowland and part of the Sredna Gora - Sarnena Mountain.

    WORLD TRADE G/SPS/GEN/1072 17 March 2011 ORGANIZATION (11-1356) Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures Original: English FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE SITUATION IN BULGARIA Communication from the European Union The following communication, received on 15 March 2011, is being circulated at the request of the delegation of the European Union. _______________ I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION 1. On Wednesday 5 January 2011, the Bulgarian authorities confirmed a case of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in one of three wild boars shot on 30 December 2010 in the municipality of Malko Tarnovo, Burgas region, around 2 km from the border with Turkey. 2. Bulgaria has implemented the measures in the framework of Council Directive 2003/85/EC of 29 September 2003 on EU measures for the control of foot-and-mouth disease. The measures provided for in the Directive include epidemiological investigation, suspension of hunting and a ban in feeding wild animals, placing under official surveillance holdings keeping animals of susceptible species, inspection by an official veterinarian of all wild animals shot or found dead, surveillance programmes and prevention measures applicable to the holdings keeping animals of susceptible species and if necessary, in its surroundings, including the transport and movement of animals of susceptible species within, from and to the area, etc. 3.     66 Mythological Thinking and Archetypes in the Contemporary Bulgarian Nestinarski Ritual Complex Ana Stefanova Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies and Ethnographic Museum (IEFSEM) Bulgaria, Sofia Photographer: Svetlan Stefanov, Bulgaria Abstract The paper examines mythological thinking in the contemporary performance of the ancient ritual complex of nestinarstvo in Bulgaria. As the folk tradition is transformed into freshly “invented” forms in the village of Stomanevo, it has been influenced by “external” factors such as individual cultural elements as well as by globalization, in particular easy access to information and the flow of esoteric literature into Bulgaria in the aftermath of communism. The rite is further molded by distinct psychological factors that constitute fundamental and dynamic conditions necessary for the tradition to be preserved and to evolve. This ritual is a living example of a community phenomenon with roots in the collective unconscious and based on archetypal structure. While its “outer” traits may vary, the “core” remains the same, representing a mosaic of universal values anchored in space and time. The paper examines mythological thinking in a contemporary performance of the ancient ritual complex of nestinarstvo in Bulgaria. (1) As the old tradition has been transformed into newly “invented” forms (2), it has been influenced by “external” factors such as individual cultural elements and globalization, represented by easy access to information and the flow of esoteric literature into Bulgaria in the aftermath of the fall of communism. These trends are further molded by distinct internal psychological determinants, which make up basic dynamic conditions required for a tradition to persist and to evolve.
