Molluscs of the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area
Molluscs of the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area S a b i n e F ISCHER & M i c h a e l D UDA Abstract: Research in the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area (DWA) in the southwest of Lower Austria is mainly concerned with the inventory of flora, fauna and habitats, interdisciplinary monitoring and studies on ecological disturbances and process dynamics. During a four-year qualitative study of non-marine molluscs, 96 sites within the DWA and nearby nature reserves were sampled in cooperation with the “Alpine Land Snails Working Group” located at the Natural History Museum of Vienna. Altogether, 84 taxa were recorded (72 land snails, 12 water snails and mussels) including four endemics and seven species listed in the Austrian Red List of Molluscs. A reference collection (empty shells) of molluscs, which is stored at the DWA administration, was created. This project was the first systematic survey of mollusc fauna in the DWA. Further sampling might provide additional information in the future, particularly for Hydrobiidae in springs and caves, where detailed analyses (e.g. anatomical and genetic) are needed. Molluscan Fauna of the Javoříčský Karst (Czech Republic, Central Moravia)

Hlaváč Abstract: Data about Recent molluscan fauna of the Javoříčský Karst are given. Altogether 77 species (76 species of Gastropoda, 1 species of Bivalvia) were recorded. Molluscan fauna is dominated by wood- land communities occurring in various types of woodland habitats while elements of open grounds and aquatic habitats are poorly represented. Of prime importance is the occurrence of the Alpine and Carpathian elements at the same place as well as the records of sensitive woodland species Bulgarica cana and overlooked slug Deroceras turcicum, both new ones for the area of the Javoříčský Karst. The list of recorded molluscs is enclosed in this paper as well as the quadrangle mapping of important speci- es Orcula dolium and Itala ornata. Due to the confusion of epilithic species Chondrina avenacea, report- ed from the area studied in the end of 19th century, the distributions of Chondrina clienta and Chondrina avenacea in the Czech Republic are shortly commented and compared in the form of quadrangle maps. Among them, the Bohemian Karst and Moravian Karst represent a typically developed karst phenomenon. Other, generally small karstic areas show poorly or partly developed karst phenomenon. The fragmentarily developed karst phenomenon is mostly characterised by subterranean features while surface ones are often absent. Although the Javoříčský Karst shows fragmentarily developed karst phenomenon, its molluscan fauna is rather varied, much like the malacofauna of the Bohemian or Moravian Karst. -

Abstract: List of all ppecies of snails (Gastropoda) and mussels (Bivalvia) which have been known from Styria until now, tuned to the list of Austrian species from „ZOODAT" (Zoo_ geographical bank of data of Austria). Nach jahrzehntelangem Stillstand der malakologischen Erforschung der Steiermark werden seit etwa zehn Jahren von mehreren Seiten einschlägige Untersuchungen durchgeführt, über die bereits etliche Veröffentlichungen vor- liegen. Außerdem wurden durch Herrn Dr. Walter KLEMM (Wien) die Styriaca- Bestände der Abteilung für Zoologie am Steiermärkischen Landesmuseum Joanneum revidiert und die Daten erfaßt (KLEMM 1976). Auch ist bei meinen Un- tersuchungen zur heimischen Bodentierwelt, die ich vorwiegend im Rahmen der „landeskundlichen Bestandsaufnahme" durchführte, im Laufe der Jahre ein be- reits sehr reiches Schneckenmaterial zusammengekommen, mit dessen fachlicher Auswertung ebenfalls begonnen wurde. Desgleichen soll die dem Joanneum ver- machte Molluskensammlung von Professor DDDr. Herbert LAMPRECHT in abseh- barer Zeit fachlich bearbeitet werden. Für alle diese Aktivitäten soll das nachstehende Verzeichnis ein Hilfsmittel sein. Es entstand aus einer ursprünglich nur für die Erschließung der Joanneums- sammlung gedachten Liste, für die das fundamentale Werk von KLEMM 1974 über die österreichischen Land-Gehäuse-Schnecken die wesentliche Basis gab. Dazu galt es, die in dem genannten Werk nicht behandelten Wasserschnecken, die Nacktschnecken sowie die Muscheln in der systematischen Reihenfolge ein- zuarbeiten. -

Virpazaria Gittenberger, 1969 is distributed in the Balkan Peninsula (Albania, Montenegro and Croatia) and inhabits the shallow subterranean habitat (MSS) on limestone base rock. Reviewing historical and recently collected material, two species, Virpazaria (Virpazaria) gittenbergeri Fehér & Erőss sp. nov. and Virpazaria (Virpazaria) pesici Fehér & Deli sp. nov., are introduced as new to science. The conservation status of the new species are assessed using IUCN criteria. Two taxa, Virpazaria (Virpazaria) pageti alexanderi Reischütz & Subai, 2012 and Virpazaria (Aemiliella) ripkeni pastorpueri Reischütz et al., 2011, are synonymized with their nominate subspecies. -

West-European terrestrial molluscs assemblages of isotopic stage II {Middle Pleistocene): Climatic implications. Palaeogeogr., Palaeoclimatol., Palaeoecol., 92:15 29. Tufil deposits in the Seine and the Avelasse Valleys have yielded numerous molluscs assemblages belonging to the Lyrodiscus Biome. These malacofaunas, primilarily indicative of forest which developed under a warm climate, have no present-day counterpart. The biostratigraphical study of several localities based on new investigations at Vernon (Seine Valley) and Arrest (Avelasse Valley) and a reexamination of the faunas from St Pierre-les-EIbeuf suggests the allocation of a Holsleinian age. This is supported by U,'Th dates for Vernon and the stratigraphy of the loess sequence of St Pierre-les-Elbeuf. Similar assemblages yielded by tufas of the same age in England and Germany indicate that the Lyrodiscus Biome was widespread. The warm climate recorded by the molluscs of the tufa deposits is in agreement with pollen and marine analyses for the isotopic stage 11 (362 423 kyr B.P.). -

Nov. 2003 Paraegopis mauritii mauritii (WESTERLUND 1866) und Helicigona stenomphala (MENKE 1830) und aus dem nördlichen Velebitgebirge bei Oltari, Kroatien. von WOLFGANG FISCHER, Wien Westlich von Oltari im nördlichen Velebitgebirges (Botanischer Garten Velebit, über 1100 m) konnten Helcigona stenomphala (MENKE 1830) und Paraegopis mauritii mauritii (WESTERLUND 1866) nachgewiesen werden. Wegen der Hitze und der Trockenheit wurden keine lebenden Schnecken beobachtet, sondern nur Leerschalen. Die meisten gesichteten Gehäuse von A. m. mauritii waren von kleinen Säugern angefressen. Tiefe Spalten und Risse im Kalkstein erschwerten das Auffinden der Schnecken. Die Funde bei Oltari liegen daher an der nordwestlichen Verbreitungsgrenze. Fischer und Reischütz konnten im Juli 1999 Paraegopis mauritii (WESTERLUND 1866) (Abb. 1) (zusammen mit Aegopis croaticus (ROSSMÄSSLER 1836), Abb. 2) auch am Flußufer der Lika in Budak aufsammeln. Budak liegt ca. 45 km Luftlinie südostlich von Oltari. Sarajevo ist ca. 200 km Luftlinie entfernt. Die Gehäuse aus Budak haben einen größeren Durchmesser als die aus Oltari. JAECKEL, KLEMM & MEISE (1957) geben P. m. serajevoensis KIMAKOWICZ 1899 (syn. von P. mauritii mauritii, siehe ZILCH 1965) für Bosnien und Kroatien an, aber ohne genaue Angabe von Fundorten. Die Unterart P. mauritii montenegrinus (O. BOETTGER 1909) hat ihre Verbreitung in Montenegro. PFEFFER (1930) erwähnt P. mauritii aus Kroatien und aus Bosnien, aber auch ohne genauere Angaben.
