N special rapporteur on human rights Yanghee ULee yesterday visited the confl ict zone in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine State where the military allegedly has been committing human rights abus- es against the Muslim minority Rohingya for months now. Lee visited the border guard posts, the attacks on which in early October triggered clear- ance operations by the army. She also visited a prison and met with villagers. “We spoke to Rakhine Buddhists as well as Muslim people,” her spokesman Aye Win said. According to the United Na- tions, at least 65,000 people have fl ed Rakhine State across the border to Bangladesh since October. The crisis puts Aung San Suu Kyi’s administration under in- ternational pressure, with rights watchdog Human Rights Watch criticising the government of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate for failing to hold the country’s military accountable for the crackdown on Rohingya. Yanghee Lee is scheduled to continue her travels through the confl ict zone today before returning to Yangon later in the week. Chemicals pollute Tokyo fi sh market site

igh levels of toxic chemicals were found in groundwater tests at a Hnew facility scheduled to replace Tokyo’s Tsukiji fi sh market — the world’s largest — clouding the costly relocation plan, news reports said yesterday. The controversial project has been de- layed over fears about toxic contamina- tion, which also impacted the 2020 Olym- pics to be hosted by the Japanese capital. The megacity’s new governor, Yuriko Koike, has said she would postpone the move originally set for November last year, as she awaits fi nal groundwater testing re- sults at the new site, a former gas plant. The relocation plan has been marred by problems, including the discovery that contractors had inexplicably failed to fi ll in a basement at the new site with clean soil as a buff er against underground pollution. Results of the fi nal testing showed that levels of toxic materials, including ben- zene, detected in underground water at the new site were above nationally set limits, the Yomiuri Shimbun and Jiji Press said. It came after the previous test also showed high levels of mercury were found inside the facility’s basement. n infl uential group of MPs yesterday called on Prime Minister Theresa May to publish by mid-February her Aplans for leaving the EU, and urged her to prepare for a transitional deal to limit uncertainty for business. The cross-party Brexit committee called for a policy docu- ment clarifying the government’s “broad aims”, including whether Britain should stay in the single market and customs union, to allow proper scrutiny before exit talks start. May has promised to trigger Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, which sets out a two-year timeframe for exit negotia- tions, by the end of March. “We’re not asking the government to give away its red lines or negotiating fallback positions, but we do want clarity on its broad aims given the signifi cance and complexity of the nego- tiating task,” said committee chairman Hilary Benn. Ministers have said they want to agree both the terms of Britain’s departure and a new trade relationship with the EU within the two-year timeframe, but European leaders have warned this will be tough. Echoing calls by many business leaders, the committee said it would be wise to prepare for a transition deal in the event that a new trade agreement was not ready. “The government should seek appropriate transitional ar- rangements in the interests of business,” both in Britain and the EU, said Benn, an opposition Labour MP. The committee said the government should seek continued A photo posted on Nahella Ashraf’s Facebook page. access to EU markets in fi nancial services, for the benefi t of both sides, and warned against a return to tariff s in other sec- tors. It also called for a commitment that British lawmakers — most of whom opposed leaving the EU in the June referendum — will have a vote on the fi nal deal. May has said that giving a “running commentary” on her plans could harm Britain’s negotiating position, but has promised more details in a major speech on Tuesday. Hijab-clad Muslim woman “I will set out more on our objectives for those negotia- tions — how we will work to get the right deal for Britain and embark on a new constructive partnership with the European Union that makes sense for us all,” she told a press conference on Friday.
