The freezing weather and snow may surprise you at first, but could be so exciting as well! Considering Sofia is the European capital of sports, every season is the right time to explore the active way of life. Here’s a couple of ways in which you can enjoy the snow and maybe challenge yourself too: IF YOU’RE A FAN OF THE MOUNTAINS Vitosha mountain is a symbol of Sofia and offers excellent ski and snowboarding conditions for a day-trip right next to Sofia with a bonus - panorama of the city from the higher parts! The ski slopes vary in difficulty, length and steepness and are suitable for beginner and advanced skiers and snowboarders, and children as well. Ski equipment is available for rent at Aleko hut. Aleko Ski Center is the oldest in Bulgaria - its altitude is about 1800 meters above sea level, it offers more than 10 different slopes, which are oriented to the north. For ski and snowboard enthusiasts are provided 1 cabin lift, 3 chair lifts, 6 stationary and several portable ski tow-lifts. Other ski centres in the mountain are “Konyarnika - Vetrovala” and “Opheliite”, where usually children go to make their first steps in the sport. Access to the ski slopes is provided by 2 lifts from Sofia, which can be reached by public transport. From Vitosha metrostation you can catch bus 122 to the Simeonovo cabin lift (which will take you directly to Aleko hut) or bus 93 to the Dragalevtsi chair lift (which takes you about half an hour from Aleko hut). The current conditions and working hours of the slopes and facilities are updated on a daily basis at www.skivitosha.com. BULGARIA IN BRIEF 7 IF YOU WANT TO STAY IN THE CITY In winter, the locals of Sofia love to have an ice skating ride! The most popular destination is the Ariana ice rink – an open-air rink working 24/7 during wintertime. After 22:00, you can skate until the morning with only one ticket. Every day at 18:00, a DJ is playing music to contribute to the good mood. It is located in the city center, right at the Eagles’ Bridge, in the Ariana lake – that’s the entrance for the Borisova Gradina Park. If this one happens to be too crowded, there are a couple of other ice rinks you can check out, that are just as great – Yunak rink near the Vasil Levski Stadium and Sportna Sofia near the Mall of Sofia are also outdoor. If the weather happens to be bad, indoor options are – the Winter Sports Palace in Studentski grad district and Slavia ice rink (located, surprisingly, in Slavia district). All places offer ice skates for rent on reasonable prices and lessons with a qualified instructor. Don’t forget to stay safe and follow all guidelines! The article examines 170 river names from the basin of the Iskar river – the largest tributary of the Danube in Bulgaria. The origin and significance of river names emerge through the application of traditional onomastic methods – onomastic (etymological) analysis and onomastic reconstruction. Comparative onomastic data from adjacent and more distant regions in Bulgaria and the Balkans are also drawn on. Conclusions about the relative antiquity of the hydronyms are drawn. This thesis is a comparative analysis of three transitional periods in Bulgaria coinciding with 1) the latter years of Ottoman dominion: 1762-1877, 2) the end of the Balkan Wars and World Wars I and II: 1878- 1947, and 3) the latter years of the Communist dominion: 1947-1989. These periods will be analyzed with the aim to understand the role that regional political agendas have played in shaping an imagined Bulgarian national identity. It will be shown that when it has occurred, identity-based conflict in Bulgaria can be better explained by examining the contributions of nationalist political influences from 1876 – 1989 on identity construction rather than an inherent Balkan propensity to religious and ethnic intolerance.

    BULGARIAN CINEMA 2016 FACTS / FIGURES / TRENDS EDITORIAL This special edition, prepared by the Bulgarian National Film Centre in con- junction with CREATIVE EUROPE MEDIA desk – Bulgaria, and with the help of the Observatory of Cultural Economics – Bulgaria, presents the current state of affairs in Bulgaria’s audiovisual industry. We did our best to offer more information both about the training in the field of cinema studies and the financing opportunities in this country, as well as about gaining support outside Bulgaria, the recent Bulgarian productions and their success, about the TV environment and the legislation. We believe that the booklet could expand on the idea of the processes taking place in Bulgarian film industry. We also believe that the reference information, providing addresses and con- tact details of producers, festivals, distributors and institutions, could prove helpful to our readers to establish contact and enter into dialogue with their Bulgarian colleagues more easily. If not mentioned explicitly, the source of information is the National Film Center. I LEGISLATION The institutional and legal environment for the development of Bulgarian film industry, set over the years of transition, contains legislation, secondary legislation and institutional bodies established under these. Bulgarian film industry functions under three legal frameworks: • National legal framework; • The acquis communautaire; • International legal framework. National legal framework Two major periods of creating the legal and institutional environment at a national level are discernable: • The 1990s, when the legal framework of the sector has been amended on more than one occasion, partially though: for example automatic subsidizing of coproductions was introduced at the time (1994) and • The period following 1997, related to the preparation for this country’s EU accession and the developing of an integral specialized regulatory framework.

Alexander Slaev, Varna Free University The goals of this study are: • to identify whether and to what extent processes of urban sprawl exist in Sofia • to identify whether and to what extent these processes were/ are generated by the market • to identify the main indicators to measure urban sprawl and the impact of the market • to identify the specific features of market demand generating urban sprawl in Sofia • to identify the interests of the market players and groups that have major contribution to the processes of urban sprawl in Sofia • to identify the main indicators to measure urban sprawl and the impact of the market • to identify social and economic factors and components of urban policy that influence market demand that generates sprawl 1. Processes of urban expansion of Sofia – growth versus sprawl In this part of the study the growth of the town/ the city of Sofia will be examined with respect to the correlation between the growth of the population, the growth of the urbanized territory and the density of population. There is a relation between the processes of growth of a city and the processes of sprawl. Like sprawl, urban growth, too, usually results in expansion of urbanized territories. The main difference is that growth normally induces rises in urban densities, while falling densities are an inherent characteristic of urban sprawl. Therefore, the enlargement of the built-up are of Sofia is the first factor to be studied with respect to studying the processes of growth/ sprawl in Sofia.
