PREFACE I went to Uganda at the invitation of the East African High Com- mission to carry on virus research as a visiting scientist at the Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, where I worked from August 1954 until mid-May 1955. My ornithological observations were made as an ama- teur in the early mornings and evenings, and on weekends. It had been my hope to study some particular field problem in addition to making a general acquaintance with African bird life. The nature of the prob- lem was determined soon after my arrival. In my bird notes, black- and-white casqued hornbills [Bycanistes suhcylindricits (Sclater)] soon took up more pages than any other species. They came to our garden frequently. In addition, a pair of them roosted and carried on courtship activities in a tree above our house. When I discovered a concentration of hornbill nests in the Mpanga Research Forest, it was apparent that I had an unusual opportunity to study the natural history of casqued hornbills. Present studies did not begin until many females were already walled in. A few pairs of late-nesting hornbills, however, enabled me to witness the beginning stages of nesting ac- tivity. Observations on 16 nesting pairs gave, in the aggregate, a rounded picture of breeding and other habits of these birds.

Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome.

This is not far from the truth. The diverse natural habitats combined with a tourist-friendly atmosphere and well-maintained road network make Ghana a real birder’s paradise. A visit to the World Heritage Site of Cape Coast Castle and understanding its controversial history was a powerful experience. The rainforest areas near Kakum National Park and vast savannas of Mole National Park were certainly highlights of this extraordinary tour. We tallied over 400 species of birds and over 20 mammals. These included highly sought- after gems like White-necked Rockfowl, Egyptian Plover, Blue-moustached Bee-eater, Akun Eagle-Owl, Stone Partridge, White- spotted Flufftail, Yellow-billed Turaco, Red- billed Dwarf Hornbill and many, many more. _____________________________________ The Tour in Detail Our first bird in Ghana was a fabulously performing Yellow-crowned Gonolek seen from the breakfast table – not a bad start! We spent the morning in Shai hills, which is Violet Turaco by Tuomas Seimola located north-east of the capital, Accra.

    South Africa Mega Birding III 5th to 27th October 2019 (23 days) Trip Report The near-endemic Gorgeous Bushshrike by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Tour leader: Daniel Keith Danckwerts Trip Report – RBT South Africa – Mega Birding III 2019 2 Tour Summary South Africa supports the highest number of endemic species of any African country and is therefore of obvious appeal to birders. This South Africa mega tour covered virtually the entire country in little over a month – amounting to an estimated 10 000km – and targeted every single endemic and near-endemic species! We were successful in finding virtually all of the targets and some of our highlights included a pair of mythical Hottentot Buttonquails, the critically endangered Rudd’s Lark, both Cape, and Drakensburg Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Pink-throated Twinspot, Southern Tchagra, the scarce Knysna Woodpecker, both Northern and Southern Black Korhaans, and Bush Blackcap. We additionally enjoyed better-than-ever sightings of the tricky Barratt’s Warbler, aptly named Gorgeous Bushshrike, Crested Guineafowl, and Eastern Nicator to just name a few. Any trip to South Africa would be incomplete without mammals and our tally of 60 species included such difficult animals as the Aardvark, Aardwolf, Southern African Hedgehog, Bat-eared Fox, Smith’s Red Rock Hare and both Sable and Roan Antelopes. This really was a trip like no other! ____________________________________________________________________________________ Tour in Detail Our first full day of the tour began with a short walk through the gardens of our quaint guesthouse in Johannesburg. Here we enjoyed sightings of the delightful Red-headed Finch, small numbers of Southern Red Bishops including several males that were busy moulting into their summer breeding plumage, the near-endemic Karoo Thrush, Cape White-eye, Grey-headed Gull, Hadada Ibis, Southern Masked Weaver, Speckled Mousebird, African Palm Swift and the Laughing, Ring-necked and Red-eyed Doves.

No part of this dissertation has been submitted to any other university in application for a higher degree. ii Conflict & Communication: Consequences Of Female Nest Confinement In Yellow-Billed Hornbills Summary The most striking feature of hornbills (Bucerotiformes) is their unusual nesting behaviour. Before laying, a female hornbill enters the nest in a tree cavity. Uniquely among birds, she then seals the nest entrance using her faeces and locally available materials, leaving a narrow gap only 1 cm wide. Through this tiny slit, the female is totally dependent on her mate for between 40 days in the smallest hornbills and up to 130 days in the largest. Once walled in the nest, the female will lay her eggs and shed all of her wing and tail feathers. The male then becomes completely responsible for provisioning his mate and a few weeks later, the chicks. When her feathers have regrown, the female breaks out of the nest, often before the chicks are fully grown. The chicks then reseal the entrance until they too are ready to fledge. This thesis describes attempts to better understand the nesting behaviour of hornbills.

    Bird List for Gabon Mammal Watching Tour August 2019 (Taxonomy follows the Clements Checklist of the Birds of the World) 147 species seen and three heard only This tour of Gabon, led by Fiona Reid, was focused primarily on the pursuit of mammals, but group members, also with an interest in birds (Debs Bradley, Laura Busby and Keith Millar) were able to record 150 species. While not a particularly high total for Gabon, no sound recordings were used and our total did include a number of sought-after species. Highlights included three hawk eagles (Crowned, Ayer’s and Cassin’s); a close encounter with a Long-tailed Hawk; four species of owl, each seen exceptionally well; six species of hornbill, Bates’s Nightjar, several African Finfoot, Forbes’s Plover, Grey Pratincole, Spot-breasted Ibis, Black and Rosy Bee- eaters, a good tally of kingfishers and the uncommon Olivaceous Flycatcher. Hearing Dja River Scrub Warbler, while tracking Western Lowland Gorilla was admittedly tantalizing, but a clear case of mammalian prioritisation! As mentioned in the main report, a key management goal in Lope National Park is to protect regionally-rare savannah ecosystems within the continuous rainforest block through the use of fire. We found these savannah areas virtually devoid of birds. More broadly, in echoing the observations of Kevin Bryan and Sjef Oilers, members of Jon Hall’s mammal watching tour group in August 2018, we too noted a (worrying) lack of those species (particularly smaller birds) with more catholic habitat preferences and pan-African distributions. Evidence is still circumstantial as to whether these populations are being negatively impacted and how, but, the absence of a number of species that one would reasonably expect to see during a visit to the right habitat was evident.

Birding Africa Tour Report Tour Africa Birding On the North-East Pre-Tour we started off driving We commenced the Main Zambia Tour at the Report Tour Africa Birding north from Lusaka to the Bangweulu area, where spectacular Mutinondo Wilderness. From here we headed east feeding young. Other highlights included African which we managed to flush. From Mutinondo Cuckoo Finch, African Scops Owl, White-crested to the Mbala area we then visited the Saisi River Barred Owlet, Miombo Rock Thrush and Spotted we headed west with our ultimate destination as Helmetshrike and African Spotted Creeper.

The scenery from the air was spectacular, particularly on our approach to the park’s airstrip. Our tour was deliberately timed to coincide with the dry season, a time when many of the trees have dropped their leaves, heightening visibility and leaving the landscapes starkly beautiful. This is also a time when the Great Ruaha River and its many smaller tributaries dwindle to shallow, often intermittent “sand rivers,” which, nonetheless, provide natural game corridors and concentration points for birds during a time in which water is at a premium. Zimmer) After touching down at the airstrip, we disembarked to find our trusty drivers, Geitan Ndunguru and Roger Mwengi, each of them longtime friends from our Northern Tanzania tours, waiting for us with their safari vehicles ready for action. The first order of business was to head to the lodge for lunch, but a large, mixed-species coven of Victor Emanuel Nature Tours 2 Southern Tanzania, 2018 vultures could not be ignored, particularly once we discovered the reason for the assemblage—a dead Hippo, no doubt taken down the previous night as it attempted to cross from one river to another, and, the sated Lion that had been gorging itself ever since.

    The Congo Peacock that made the tour (Mark Van Beirs) FORESTS OF THE CONGO PEAFOWL 6 – 25 SEPTEMBER 2017 LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS We did it again! On the fourth day of our stay at the Lomako-Yokokala Faunal Reserve, deep in the heart of Congo, we all managed to admire a splendid male Congo Peafowl on his roost! What a bird! This very special and decidedly unusual tour focused on two extremely rarely observed Congolese specialities: the truly enigmatic Congo Peafowl and our closest next of kin, the gentle Bonobo. Once one reaches the Lomako Reserve the Bonobos are not particularly difficult to see, as researchers have been habituating several groups for quite a while now. Getting to grips with the Congo Peafowl however is a totally different matter as this gamebird is easily one of the shyest and most difficult to observe species on our planet. To my surprise, none of the tactics that worked in 2015 gave any result and it was through plain hard slogging that we managed to find our target this time. Every international birder should know the amazing story of how the Congo Peafowl was discovered in the early 20th century by the American ornithologist James Chapin. In 2015 Birdquest was the first bird tour company ever to show this truly fantastic bird to its clients.

Having Hippos out the door and Elephants near camp, a pack of 23 Lion in the neighborhood kept us on our toes. We saw some difficult species well, Lesser Jacana, White-backed Night-Heron, both Slaty and Black Heron, Rufous-bellied Heron, Dwarf Bittern, Dickenson’s Kestrel and Black Coucal. We saw the iconic species in beautiful light for photography with some of the wading birds in profusion: Yellow-billed Stork, African Openbill, Sarus Crane, Hamerkop, Kori Bustard, Secretary Bird, LIttle Bee-eater, Lilac-breasted Roller and Pied Kingfisher. We saw 17 species of raptors, 37 species of mammals, and were dazzled by Malachite Kingfishers and Carmine Bee-eaters. We saw Rain Trees and Sausage trees in bloom and watched Giraffe’s parade at sunset. We had two amazing local guides and lodgings ranging from a cozy camp to a luxury lodge, all enjoyed by our companionable group. This trip is a fabulous introduction to birding and safari in Africa!     Sierra Leone Trip Report, December 2016 Benjamin Schweinhart December 7, 2018 1 Introduction For my first trip to Africa, I went to Tiwai Island and Gola National Park in Sierra Leone. My primary target was Pygmy Hippo. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in that pursuit, and only heard one jump into the water while spotlighting from a bridge. However, I did have many wonderful observa- tions, including two White-bellied (Tree) Pangolins, the rare and beautiful Pohle's Fruit Bat, lekking Hammer Bats, White-necked Picathartes, many night-roosting African Pittas, and Rufous Fishing Owl. I spent most of my time walking at night, and did not record many diurnal birds.
