McCabe, Assistant to the Upperclass and Greek Housefellows Subject: Fraternity and Sorority Life Report, Fall 2013 Date: January 30th, 2014 Attached, please find the information on twenty-three chapters that comprised the fraternity and sorority community at Carnegie Mellon University for Fall 2013. This report is shared with University administrators, faculty and staff, the fraternities and sororities, chapter advisors, chapter presidents, and International offices as a way to raise awareness of the contributions to Carnegie Mellon University made by our fraternities and sororities. This report highlights the achievements of last semester. In Fall 2013, the fraternities and sororities contributed a total of 6842.8 hours of community service and raised $30,807 in donations for local and national charities. Of the chapters who reported their involvement about 74% of members were involved in other campus organizations at Carnegie Mellon with about 37% of these students serving in leadership positions. Please note that these numbers are based off of our Standards of Excellence reporting, for which 11 of our 23 chapters were participants. Academically, ten of the fraternities and sororities earned average QPAs at or at or above the university undergraduate average this Fall. Fraternity and Sorority Academic Year Graphs * Information released to the public Fraternity and Sorority Life Report, Fall 2013 Membership . 23 fraternities and sororities were active at Carnegie Mellon: 6 Panhellenic sororities; 11 Interfraternity Council fraternities; 3 Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) chapters; and 3 National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) chapters were active for Fall 2013. Of Carnegie Mellon’s 6,223 undergraduate students, 1,176 are members of fraternities or sororities making up 19% of the student population. 597 women are affiliated with a sorority, reflecting 22% of the female undergraduate population. 579 men are affiliated with a fraternity, reflecting 16% of the male undergraduate population. The average size of a Panhellenic (PHC) sorority is 88 women. The average size of an Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternity is 48 men. The average size of a multicultural (MGC) fraternity and sorority is 35 people. The average size for a National Panhellence Council, Inc. (NPHC) fraternity and sorority is 3 people. A total of 270 new members joined the fraternity and sorority community this semester: 128 women joined PHC sororities; 115 men joined IFC fraternities; 3 men joined NPHC fraternities; and 24 men and women joined MGC organizations. Scholarship/Leadership . This Fall, 10 chapters had QPAs at or above the all-university average: Alpha Chi Omega; Delta Gamma; Delta Delta Delta; Kappa Alpha Theta; Kappa Kappa Gamma; Sigma Nu; Sigma Tau Gamma; Sigma Phi Epsilon; Alpha Kappa Alpha; Kappa Phi Lambda. Six sororities had QPAs above the all-women’s average: Alpha Chi Omega; Delta Gamma; Delta Delta Delta; Kappa Alpha Theta; Kappa Kappa Gamma; Kappa Phi Lambda. Four fraternities had QPAs above the all- men’s average: Pi Kappa Alpha; Sigma Nu; Sigma Tau Gamma; Sigma Phi Epsilon. The all IFC QPA average was 3.15. The all PHC QPA average was 3.28. The all NPHC QPA average was 2.90. The MGC QPA average was 3.09. 151 members of the Greek community (13%) received a 4.0 for the Fall 2013 semester. Order of Omega, an honorary society with a commitment to scholarship and leadership for Greek men and women, inducted 31 new members this Fall. Rho Lambda, an honorary society for Panhellenic women exhibiting leadership in their community, inducted 26 new members. Please note: All QPA and Membership numbers are based on the grades of active, inactive, and new members. The following is based off of information provided to our office via Standards of Excellence applications. For the Fall 2013 semester, 11 out of 23 fraternities and sororities volunteered this information to the Greek Life Office as a part of their Standards of Excellence application. Community Service and Philanthropy Of the 11 Chapters participating in Standards of Excellence: . 7,932.3 hours of community service was completed this semester. Totaling an average of 12 hours of community service per member. $30,807 was raised for local, national and international charities this semester. The largest monetary donation during the Fall semester was from Sigma Alpha Epsilon through their philanthropy event “Donut Dash,” raising $21,600 for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (UPMC). Four of these chapters demonstrated superior commitment to community service: Kappa Kappa Gamma, with 1,634.5 hours; Kappa Alpha Theta with 1,537.5 hours; Delta Gamma, with 1,319 hours; and Pi Kappa Alpha with 1,031 hours. Campus Involvement Of the 11 Chapters participating in Standards of Excellence: . 78% reported involvement in other campus organizations . 39% served in leadership roles in other campus organizations. Standards of Excellence chapters are committed to promoting the academic mission of the University, developing leadership and character in members, providing service to the community, and fostering life-long friendships between members.
