  • 2010: Year of the Woman in Wine
2010: Year of the Woman in Wine By The Tasting Panel Editorial Team Issue: JanuaryFebruary 2010 Amelia Ceja President, Ceja Vineyards Napa Valley As one of the few Latina women in wine in California, Amelia Ceja is determined to help shape the future of the consumer’s comprehension of—and abilities in—pairing food and wine. “I want to be thought of as being instrumental in breaking down the barriers of the mystification of wine,” says Amelia, who was appointed President of the Carnerosbased winery when it was founded in 1999. “Before we even press our fruit, we know the elements that we want to show up in the wine,” she insists. It is Amelia’s culinary expertise that gifts her with an insight to work with winemaker (and brotherinlaw) Armando Ceja to help discover similar flavors in the wines that also exist in food. “It was that knowledge that gave me the confidence to run the business,” she points out. “There are not a lot of women in power in our industry, so I am proud to be one of the female leaders to promote the wines, through my online cooking show and our winerelated blogs, showcasing global cuisine and wine exploration.” The first vintage of Ceja, released in 2001, consisted of three varietals—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Merlot—totaling 750 cases. Today, the winery produces over a dozen varietals and a growing production of 10,000 cases. Flagship wine: “Armando tells me the Ceja Pinot Noir reminds him of me,” Amelia laughs.

  • 2011 Kenwood Zinfandel Reserveproduct-Pdf
2011 Kenwood Zinfandel Reserveproduct-pdf - Sonoma County, California Why We're Drinking It Sold out at the winery, and only produced in the best years, this Reserve Zin is packed with jammy, juicy ripe fruit and exemplifies the massive, bold yet somehow still wonderfully balanced style that defines the best Zins from Sonoma County. Kenwood is pretty much a household name, especially when it comes to Zin, and this historic Sonoma winery deserves much of the credit for the popularity of quality Zinfandel today. While many of Kenwood’s releases can hardly be considered small production or boutique, their Reserve Zin is made in quite limited amounts and only in those vintages that warrant it. The 2011 vintage was spectacular for Zin, as evidenced in this broad-shouldered, super juicy red. Spicy, with a judicious note of herbs and floral aromatics, the 2011 Reserve was aged over 20 long months in a combination of French (62%) and American (38%) oak and includes a small amount of Syrah for added grip. The wine is drinking at its absolute peak right now and makes a delectable match for slow-cooked red meats, barbecued pork ribs or pasta tossed in a red sauce. Reasons why we love it: Kenwood’s roots stretch all the way back to 1906, when Pagani Brothers Winery opened up shop in what is today Kenwood’s home. Since 1970 Kenwood has turned out vintage after vintage of great wines released always at reasonable prices. For this Reserve Zinfandel winemaker Pat Henderson selected one barrel at a time (including the addition of 3% Syrah) from the best lots of Kenwood’s 2011 harvest.

More from Features Certainly, a modest, qualitative approach will be more successful than a forced-march strategy that attempts to generate the maximum number of winery visits. There is something for everyone at every winery, whether it's an update on current winemaking methods, a historical walking tour or simply a taste of the new vintage. As always, wine lovers should tackle the tasting game in a responsible manner. Even with a designated driver among your party, a little sip here and there can add up to an unpleasant experience.

  • Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
SONOMA COUNTY CABERNET SAUVIGNON For more than three decades, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series remains the ultimate expression of artistry and ne winemaking by blending the nest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma County. THE ARTIST Clare E. Rojas (born 1976) tells stories though painting, music, installations and video work. Her narratives used to be based in folk art tableaus that tackled gender stereotypes. Recently she has moved into pure geometric abstractions. She sees them as part of a continuum free of limitations and tied to her interest in color, line, shape and space. The geometric abstractions reference West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art. “For me the shift to abstraction was personal. There are a couple of challenges I find in abstraction. One is letting go of the idea that the viewer is supposed to perceive my work one way. There is no right or wrong way to look at the work.” Based in San Francisco, CA Clare takes inspiration for her art from her surroundings. For the Untitled piece featured on the 2013 label, Clare was moved to capture the reflection of light and shadow of a landscape over the course of a day, capturing time in moments. THE VINEYARDS Since its first vintage in 1975, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series has SONOMA COUNTY LAKE SONOMA represented the “best of the best” of our Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year ROCKPILE SONOMA COAST select vineyards located throughout Sonoma County’s premier Cabernet Sonoma County appellations are picked at the peak of flavor and then carefully crushed, DRY CREEK FORT ROSS VALLEY ALEXANDER VALLEY fermented, and aged.

Glass Pours Cocktails CHARDONNAY Simply Sparkling 8 Angeline (California) 9/36 Citron Lemonade 9 Thirty years ago, we rented a convertible to drive the Absolut + Triple Sec + Cranberry California coastline without a care in the world. (Obviously before we had children and restaurants!) Gin and Jam 9 I remember a fabulous omelet we had in a restaurant in Bombay + Wild Blueberry + Lemon Santa Barbara. Now I think of Santa Barbara for their grapes grown with mouthwatering flavors of baked Bourbon Maple Smash 9 pears and buttered toast Maker’s Mark + Maple + Orange + Bitters Tito’s Ginger Mule 10 Tito’s Vodka + Licor 43 + Ginger Simple SAUVIGNON BLANC Sterling Vineyards (California) 10/40 Figlio Martini 10 There are 2 types of Sauvignon Blanc people: the Absolut + Pomegranate + Lime “grassy- grapefruity” type or the “soft and approachable” type that go gaga over Sauv Blancs produced in Figlio Manhattan 10 California. Sterling does SB right if you are the second Bulleit Whiskey + Vanilla syrup + Cherry type — like me! Flavors of citrus and stone fruit. Beer Draft 6 PINOT GRIGIO Zoetic American Pale Ale (Yellow Springs) Avanti (Italy) 8/32 Rhinegeist Truth IPA (Cincinnati) Have I told you about my favorite blue cheese yet? It’s a Warped Wing Trotwood Lager (Dayton) creamy and delicious selection from France called St. Craft 5 Agur. Spread it on a cracker with a slice of fresh pear Seventh Son’s Golden Ale (Cbus) and you will be in heaven. Almost. To truly get there you Madtree Happy Amber Ale (Cincinnati) have to enjoy it with a crisp and dry white wine like Brewdog Elvis Juice Citrus IPA (Cbus) Avanti.
