2010: Year of the Woman in Wine By The Tasting Panel Editorial Team Issue: JanuaryFebruary 2010 Amelia Ceja President, Ceja Vineyards Napa Valley As one of the few Latina women in wine in California, Amelia Ceja is determined to help shape the future of the consumer’s comprehension of—and abilities in—pairing food and wine. “I want to be thought of as being instrumental in breaking down the barriers of the mystification of wine,” says Amelia, who was appointed President of the Carnerosbased winery when it was founded in 1999. “Before we even press our fruit, we know the elements that we want to show up in the wine,” she insists. It is Amelia’s culinary expertise that gifts her with an insight to work with winemaker (and brotherinlaw) Armando Ceja to help discover similar flavors in the wines that also exist in food. “It was that knowledge that gave me the confidence to run the business,” she points out. “There are not a lot of women in power in our industry, so I am proud to be one of the female leaders to promote the wines, through my online cooking show and our winerelated blogs, showcasing global cuisine and wine exploration.” The first vintage of Ceja, released in 2001, consisted of three varietals—Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Merlot—totaling 750 cases. Today, the winery produces over a dozen varietals and a growing production of 10,000 cases. Flagship wine: “Armando tells me the Ceja Pinot Noir reminds him of me,” Amelia laughs. -

RES. 365 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION Whereas Robert Mondavi, a much-loved and admired man of many talents, passed away on May 16, 2008, at the age of 94; Whereas Robert Mondavi will be fondly and most famously remembered for his work in producing and promoting California wines on an international scale; 2 Whereas Robert Gerald Mondavi was born to Italian immi- grant parents, Cesare and Rose, on June 18, 1913, in Virginia, Minnesota, and his family later moved to Lodi, California, where he attended Lodi High School; Whereas after graduating from Stanford University in 1937 with a degree in economics and business administration, Robert Mondavi joined his father and younger brother, Peter, in running the Charles Krug Winery in the Napa Valley of California; Whereas Robert Mondavi left Krug Winery in 1965 to estab- lish his own winery in the Napa Valley, and, in 1966, motivated by his vision that California could produce world-class wines, he founded the first major winery built in Napa Valley since Prohibition, the Robert Mondavi Winery; Whereas in the later 1960s, the release of the Robert Mondavi Winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon opened the eyes of the world to the potential of the Napa Valley region; Whereas Robert Mondavi introduced new and innovative tech- niques of wine production, such as the use of stainless steel tanks to produce wines, like his now-legendary Fume´ Blanc; Whereas as a tireless advocate for California wine and food, and the Napa Valley, Robert Mondavi was convinced that California wines could -

In 1946, while attending a teachers' college for young women, Margrit met U. S. Army Captain Philip Biever. The pair married shortly thereafter and moved to South Dakota, where Philip was stationed. Margrit and Philip had three children: Philip Jr., Annie, and Phoebe. -

(Obviously before we had children and restaurants!) Gin and Jam 9 I remember a fabulous omelet we had in a restaurant in Bombay + Wild Blueberry + Lemon Santa Barbara. Now I think of Santa Barbara for their grapes grown with mouthwatering flavors of baked Bourbon Maple Smash 9 pears and buttered toast Maker’s Mark + Maple + Orange + Bitters Tito’s Ginger Mule 10 Tito’s Vodka + Licor 43 + Ginger Simple SAUVIGNON BLANC Sterling Vineyards (California) 10/40 Figlio Martini 10 There are 2 types of Sauvignon Blanc people: the Absolut + Pomegranate + Lime “grassy- grapefruity” type or the “soft and approachable” type that go gaga over Sauv Blancs produced in Figlio Manhattan 10 California. Sterling does SB right if you are the second Bulleit Whiskey + Vanilla syrup + Cherry type — like me! Flavors of citrus and stone fruit. Beer Draft 6 PINOT GRIGIO Zoetic American Pale Ale (Yellow Springs) Avanti (Italy) 8/32 Rhinegeist Truth IPA (Cincinnati) Have I told you about my favorite blue cheese yet? It’s a Warped Wing Trotwood Lager (Dayton) creamy and delicious selection from France called St. Craft 5 Agur. Spread it on a cracker with a slice of fresh pear Seventh Son’s Golden Ale (Cbus) and you will be in heaven. Almost. To truly get there you Madtree Happy Amber Ale (Cincinnati) have to enjoy it with a crisp and dry white wine like Brewdog Elvis Juice Citrus IPA (Cbus) Avanti. -
Lauren Kopit Winemaker
Lauren Kopit Winemaker Lauren Kopit is the Winemaker at Sterling Vineyards, supporting Senior Winemaker and General Manager Harry Hansen. Lauren has worked in the wine industry since graduating from UC Davis with a BS in Microbiology in 2009. Lauren began her career in winemaking labs, first as an intern at Franciscan Winery and then as a technician at Matchbook Wine Company, before returning to UC Davis to earn her Masters of Science in Viticulture and Enology. After graduating in 2013, Lauren experienced three harvests working at the small, ultra- premium Odette Estate Winery, followed by a role as Vintage cellar hand at New Zealand’s Church Road Winery, before joining the Sterling Vineyards team in 2014. “I was at Sterling one week and I knew I wanted to be here forever,” Lauren Kopit, Winemaker remembers Lauren, who started as an Interim Assistant Winemaker before taking on the permanent role of Assistant Winemaker in June of 2015. At Sterling, Lauren notes, “The priority on quality and the passion from the whole team is incredibly inspiring.” In her role as Winemaker, Lauren aids in the day-to-day operations of the winery and provides vineyard oversight, collaborating with Senior Winemaker Harry Hansen in finalizing all of the wine blends. Winemaking combines all things Lauren truly enjoys: science, art, creativity, teaching and interacting with people. Lauren is an avid oil painter and amateur photographer. “The art of winemaking taps into a familiar creative process like painting,” says Lauren. “I feel very lucky that I get to use both my love of science and my creativity on a daily basis.” Lauren grew up in Southern California and has a natural proclivity for the sun and outdoors. -
