Leeds turns out for Black Dyke Festival John Stirzaker reports from Leeds Town Hall Leeds Town Hall was again filled to capacity for last weekend’s annual Black Dyke Festival. The format followed last year’s gala concert, with the Black Dyke Band joined by the Yorkshire Youth Band and a massed finale involving a number of local bands. Prior to the concert there were trombone and cornet symposiums. Black Dyke’s principal cornet, Richard Marshall, and cornet virtuoso, Alan Morrison, led the cornets. The trombone workshop was organised by the British Trombone society under its President and Black Dyke solo trombone, Brett Baker. The hosts had the first half to themselves opening the afternoon with Holst’s Jupiter from the Planets Suite, before playing the set-test in the forthcoming English National Championship, Martin Ellerby’s Elgar Variations. Richard Marshall’s revival of Bellstedt’s Princess Alice was the first featured solo in this part of the concert, while soprano cornet, Paul Duffy, demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the leading exponents of the instrument in his own Dixieland style arrangement of When the Saints. The first half concluded with Ray Farr’s arrangement of Stravinski’s Firebird. The Yorkshire Youth Band, fresh from its successful appearance in Manchester the previous Sunday, was equally accomplished on home soil as it opened the second half with County Palatine (Maurice Johnstone), continuing with Putting on the Ritz. Brett Baker was on hand to play Don Lusher’s DL Blues. The British Trombone Society displayed its day’s efforts with a performance of James McFaddyen’s Enchanted Forest, while the massed band part of the afternoon saw members of Delph, Hebden Bridge, Clifton and Lightcliffe and Kirton bands joining Black Dyke and the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band, to play Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. With over 200 players on stage, the day was a brought to a close with Sir Arthur Sullivan’s The Lost Chord. Preston own-choice tests revealed The British Federation of Brass Bands, organiser of the English National Brass Band Championship, which will take place in Preston’s Guild Hall on Saturday 25 June, has announced the test pieces that the competing bands will perform in the own-choice section of the event. Martin Ellerby’s Elgar Variations will provide the set test for the bands competing to represent England at the 2012 European Championships in Rotterdam, before performing the following works in the afternoon session: Vienna Nights (Philip Wilby) (2), Concerto Grosso (Derek Bourgeois), Titan’s Progress (Hermann Pallhuber), Music of the Spheres (Philip Sparke) (2), Legend of King Alfred (Peter Meechan), …Dove Descending (Philip Wilby), Spiriti (Thomas Doss) and Symphony of Colours (Simon Dobson).
