    STONECLOUGH COMMUNITY WOODLAND IMPROVEMENT PROJECT NEWSLETTER Community Opportunity There is a great opportunity to improve a small local woodland. It is behind Prestolee Primary School and next to the recently improved canal towpath. You can get there on foot from Church Road, Riverside Drive or the towpath. Present Condition The site was once the garden of a large house belonging to Irwell Bank Mill. But dead trees, saplings, brambles, overgrown vegetation and litter on this land create a poor habitat and getting around the site is difficult. Plans for Improvement The Primary School, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers Groups, Zac’s Youth Bars, Stoneclough Community Centre, Holiday Club, Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society and other local voluntary groups want to improve access to this land and the quality and diversity of its habitat. It is a place where local voluntary groups, families and individuals can develop new skills, learn about and enjoy the local environment and wildlife. The initial plans (shown overleaf), are to survey and uncover what is on the site, create paths to give safe access around the site and to the canal towpath. We aim to plant native trees, shrubs and bulbs, and create a dry hedge from coppiced branches. Wherever possible we will keep and improve existing features. Tree work will start in mid-March. The site may be fenced off for safety reasons from April to May whilst these improvements take place and it will then re-open to the public. Existing footpath access will stay open for most of the time. Funding, Support & Community Involvement Grant money has already been obtained from central government, and there is also funding from Kearsley Area Forum, Bolton at Home, Prestolee Academy Trust and the Canal Society.

It is evident that the phrase “out of sight is out of mind” applies to the longest season of the church year, but then Martin Luther did refer that the Holy Spirit, which is the centerpiece of the season of Pentecost, is the “bashful member of the Trinity”, nonetheless, as the Holy Spirit is the ongoing presence of God in the world, it is important that we do not forget about the Spirit. We are not in this life alone; God is with us: The Lutheran church of the Baroque observed three days of Pentecost. Some composers wrote sacred cantatas to be performed in the church services of these days.     Rhodes Bleachworks Brass Band

    Rhodes Bleachworks Brass Band Gavin Holman – June 2019 This band was probably formed in the mid-1890s. The first known mention is its appearance at a contest at Middleton in April 1897. It was strongly linked to the Bleach and Dye Works at Rhodes, near Middleton. The band’s conductor for most of its life was John H. White. It was disbanded on 9th December 1909. The Bleach Works was Obadiah Ashworth and Co. (bleachers, dyers, finishers, embossers, &c.), Rhodes Bleach and Dye Works, Middleton. It was one of several similar industries in Rhodes and Middleton, part of the larger fabric, weaving, finishing, and garment manufacturing industrial belt in northern Manchester and across to Yorkshire. Obadiah Ashworth founded the company and went into partnership with James W. Jones. Upon the death of Ashworth in 1874, James Jones continued the business as sole owner, but retained the Ashworth name. He was later instrumental in establishing and supporting the Bleachworks Band. In addition to these brief notes, the band’s Treasurer’s Notebook, covering the years 1898 to 1909, is transcribed below. This is followed by a brief sketch of the conductor John White. No known photographs of the band survive, although at least four “formal” photos were taken, as recorded in the Treasurer’s notebook. A typical concert of the band, at St Michael's Flags park, in August 1903, with conductor J.H. White, consisted of: Hymn; March: Silver Trumpets (Viviani); Overture: Poet & Peasant (Suppé); Fantasia: Joan of Arc (Round); Trombone solo: Ora Pro Nobilis (Piccolomini); Selection: Idomeneo (Mozart); Air Varie: Eventide (Rimmer); Chorus: The Heavens are Telling (Haydn).

    THIS MONTH, MAY, SUNDAY 10AM WORSHIP AT ST JAMES POINT LONSDALE (JUNE AT ST GEORGE’S QUEENSCLIFF) Dear people of St George's and St James', A book that I keep coming back to around this “Pentecost” time of year is “The Go-Between God”, first published in 1973 by Bishop John V. Taylor. Some of his words: “...the primary effect of the Pentecost experience was to fuse the individuals of the company into a fellowship which in the same moment was caught up into the life of the risen Lord. In a new awareness of Him and of one another they burst into praise, and the world came running for an explanation. In other words, the gift of the Holy Spirit in the fellowship of the church first enables Christians to “be”. And only as a consequence of that sends them to do and to speak”. I suppose that these days we don't often see people “”running to us for an explanation”” about who we are and what we believe ! But we do need to be alert to welcome and support those (often shy) “searchers” who might , from time to time, ask us tricky questions... or even drift into our church services. • Let us be confident and know that as the Holy Spirit dwells in us we will be given the right words and the right actions appropriate to the occasion.     A NONCONFORMIST MISSIONARY JOURNEY TO LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE IN JULY 1672 B. Cattle, M.A., Ph.D., F.S.A. and M.J. Crossley Evans, B.A., F.G.S. The Revd Henry Maurice (c. 1636-1682)' was born at Methlan in the Llyn peninsula, into a Caernarvonshire family of some substance, bound up with Church and State. He was successively at Jesus College, Oxford (1652), Puri­ tan curate of Llannor and Deneio (1658), in which parish lay the town of Pwllheli, and incumbent of Meyllteyrn (1661). When he took to preaching, popular applause made him, on his own admission, 'a vain-glorious fellow', and for some time he led a loose, immoral life, and was heavily in debt. On 20 March, 1662, he conformed to the Act of Uniformity as Vicar of Bromfield, Salop, and on 3 June, 1668, moved to a far richer living as Rector of Church Stretton; but whilst here, having spent his childhood and youth in 'vanity', he was suddenly roused 'to a great solicitude about his everlas­ ting state' by the ravages of malignant fever in the parish. He felt that he could not rest content until he had aban­ doned his living and had ceased to conform. He tried to keep this to himself, but his wife sensed his worry and, catching him alone, insisted on hearing everything; after which, since only his concern for his family restrained him, she urged him to go ahead, saying that she utterly trusted in God. Thus encouraged, he confided in 'Brother' Thomas Quarrell, an itinerant Congregational preacher in Whit- church (Salop), Glamorgan and Monmouth, who advised him to 'count the cost before he entered upon a suffering state'; but Maurice answered that if he remained Rector 'his conscience would fly in his face'.
