It was a remarkable project. The performers, musicians and creators were all exceptional in their fields. The aim was to present the traditional nursery rhymes and songs in an entertaining and imaginative way but true to their historic roots and without the cheap commercialization often present in children’s music. Each delightful piece was approached on its own terms. Some are unaccompanied, others have a simple piano setting. Old King Cole (which references the court music of Charles II) has a Baroque arrangement, The Grand Old Duke of York a military band, Little Boy Blue dreamy French horns and so forth. The vocal performances are all clear and authentic and the choice of instruments often surprising. We now know that the old traditional rhymes and songs are very important in helping children to develop their language skills and also to make sense of the world. We hope that this collection will play its part in keeping this rich tradition alive for many years to come. And someone has suddenly taken notice, and that’s okay. A bit of profile isn’t gonna hurt us — and I say us, the plural, for the folk scene — isn’t gonna hurt us at all.” In the same year as Carthy’s moment of recognition, something happened that did hurt the folk scene. Lal Waterson, Carthy’s sister-in- law, bandmate, near neighbor and close friend, died of cancer.

Topic Records 80th Anniversary Start time: 8pm Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes with interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change Martin Aston discusses the history behind the world’s oldest independent label ahead of this collaborative performance. When Topic Records made its debut in 1939 with Paddy Ryan’s ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’, an accordion-backed diatribe against capitalist businessmen who underpay their employees, it’s unlikely that anyone involved was thinking of the future – certainly not to 2019, when the label celebrates its 80th birthday. In any case, the future would have seemed very precarious in 1939, given the outbreak of World War II, during which Topic ceased most activity (shellac was particularly hard to source). But post-1945, the label made good on its original brief: ‘To use popular music to educate and inform and improve the lot of the working man,’ explains David Suff, the current spearhead of the world’s oldest independent label – and the undisputed home of British folk music. Tonight at the Barbican (where Topic held their 60th birthday concerts), musical director Eliza Carthy – part of the Topic recording family since 1997, though her parents Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been members since the sixties and seventies respectively - has marshalled a line-up to reflect the passing decades, which hasn’t been without its problems. ‘We have far too much material, given it’s meant to be a two-hour show!’ she says. ‘It’s impossible to represent 80 years – you’re talking about the left-wing leg, the archival leg, the many different facets of society - not just communists but farmers and factory workers - and the folk scene in the Fifties, the Sixties, the Seventies..

MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE | Posted on Fri, Jan. 31, 2014 | Article Page 1 of 2 Galicia’s Carlos Nuñez, ‘the Jimi Hendrix of the bagpipes,’ plays here Wednesday By Fernando Gonzalez | Special to the Miami Herald Carlos Nuñez is far more than “the Jimi Hendrix of the bagpipes,” or the “the seventh Chieftain,” an honorary member of the legendary traditional Irish band. But if you happen to be the modern master of the gaita, the bagpipe of Galicia, a region in the northwest corner of Spain, maybe such barker’s calls help make new audiences stop and look. The truth is richer. Nuñez is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist. (He also plays flute, recorder, whistles and a number of traditional instruments.) And he is both a traditionalist and an innovator, playing a key role in preserving the gaita, an instrument that is a symbol of Galician culture yet was once fading to extinction. His collaborations speak to the universality of this instrument and the possibilities for its future. Over the years Nuñez has collaborated with The Carlos Nuñez plays the gaita, the bagpipe of Galicia. His 1996 debut recording, A Irmandade Das Estrelas (The Brotherhood of Stars), an improbable platinum seller in Spain, featured more than 50 guests. “Collaborations are my modus operandi,” says Nuñez who begins his new North American tour at the Coral Gables Congregational Church on Wednesday night. “It´s a philosophy that comes from traditional music — especially Celtic music.
