The devastation by fire of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is a very sad catastrophe observed around the world on television and a loss felt deeply in our hearts. The Cathedral of Paris, dating from medieval times, has stood as an important part of our Catholic tradition and heritage for over 800 years. We can barely imagine the devastating loss for the people of Paris. In an effort to show our solidarity with the Archdiocese of Paris, I am requesting that all parishes/missions and institutions in our Archdiocese pray in a special way at Mass on Wednesday, April 24 for the Church of Paris. I will preside at St. Mary’s Cathedral’s 12:00 noon Mass for this intention. I have also sent a letter of prayerful solidarity to Most Reverend Michel Aupetit, Archbishop of Paris. Thank you.

Accordingly, here at Saint John XXIII Parish, we will offer our regular 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening Mass on April 24th for the special intentions of the Church of Paris. ______

“As the new sun rises from below, the grace of the Resurrection already casts its radiance over the whole world, a radiance reflected in the eyes of those who have watched for him since daybreak, a dawn that ushers in the day of eternity.” — Guerric of Igny

“Embracing Discipleship”

Sharing God’s Gifts is an Archdiocesan-wide Appeal which seeks to provide resources for both Diocesan and individual parish needs.

In the last four years close to $1,000,000 has been returned to parishes in the form of rebates.

Sharing God’s Gifts can be a wonderful opportunity for the parish community to work together in a spirit of stewardship, toward a goal or project that will benefit your parish and sustain your legacy. The Archdiocese in turn, can continue its important work on priorities such as Home Missions, Catechetical Programs, Youth, Lay Formation, Vocations, social justice initiatives, just to name a few. You play an important role in the success of this important annual endeavor. We are grateful for your support and your involvement.

Sharing God’s Gifts is to be a mutual effort involving all parishioners. We all need to show our willingness before God to join this venture of faith by saying “We will participate in Sharing God’s Gifts in a spirit of love and generosity.”

Archdiocese Appeal Goal for 2019 is $1,000,000

The total amount of the Offertory Income of Parishes and Missions in the Archdiocese for 2017 was $10,098,259. Saint John XXIII Parish offertory income for 2017 was $270,581. This is 2.679 % of the total Parish income in the Archdiocese for 2017.

Therefore, our Parish’s Appeal Target for 2019 is 2.679% x $1,000,00 = $26,790

The launch of the 2019 is scheduled for Sunday April 28th. Beginning the weekend of April 28th, parishioners are asked to pick up a brochure from the narthex or the parish office and prayerfully consider making their gift or pledge to Sharing God’s Gifts 2019. Remember that if our parish exceeds its target, donations in excess of the target are returned to the parish to be used towards local priorities. Contributions to Sharing God’s Gifts may be forwarded through the parish office or directly to the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. Various payment options are available. If you wish to contribute via cheque, please make cheques payable to “Sharing God’s Gifts”.

We are looking for some volunteers to assist in forming a Parish Sharing God’s Gifts Leadership Team. If you are available to help us out, please contact the parish office. Thank you again for your support and for your prayers. 3 SCHEDULE FOR APRIL 21 – MAY 4, 2019 N.B.: As circumstances suggest, the schedule below may be subject to change.

56th WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

The Church will mark the 56th World Day of Prayer for Vocations on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, May 12, 2019. The Holy Father has released a Message entitled "The courage to take a risk for God's promise", which is available on the 's website www.vatican.va. In his message, reminds us that: "Embracing this promise naturally demands the courage to risk making a decision. The first disciples, called by Jesus to be part of something greater, 'immediately left their nets and followed him' (Mk 1:18).” A Holy Hour for Vocations, presided by Archbishop Richard Gagnon, will be held on Sunday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Come and pray that the Lord will bless us with many labourers for His harvest. 5 Sunday, April 21, 2019 Solemnity of the Resurrection of the Lord

Acts of the Apostles 10.34a, 37-43 We ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

Psalm 118.1-2, 16-17, 22-23 This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.

Colossians 3.1-4 Seek the things that are above, where Christ is. or 1 Corinthians 5.6b-8 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch.

John 20.1-9 or John 20.1-18 According to the Scripture: Jesus must rise from the dead.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON THE LECTIONARY READINGS He is risen! He is truly risen! This is what the celebration of Easter is all about — the truth that Jesus was crucified for our sins and three days later rose from the dead, conquering death once and for all. We proclaim this truth […] in the Nicene Creed: “For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” Amazing. We know it’s true, but this Easter Sunday, let’s ask ourselves if we live as if it’s true. Do we simply recite this portion of our Creed week after week or do we live as witnesses to this glorious reality? A witness, of course, is one with first-hand knowledge. Our readings today focus not only on the Resurrection itself, but also on those who were witnesses to it and to the life and work of Jesus throughout His public ministry. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter proclaims, “We are witnesses of all that He did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem.” In the Gospel, St. John describes the first three witnesses to the empty tomb, Mary Magdalene, John (“the disciple whom Jesus loved,”) and Peter. Mary Magdalene arrived first at the tomb where our Lord’s Body had been laid. She saw that the stone once covering it had been removed. She ran to Peter and John to tell them what she had seen and they in turn ran to the tomb to see for themselves. Each of these three had an individual “experience” of the empty tomb. Each went up close to it to try take it all in, to marvel at what Jesus’ love and had accomplished. As a result, each one became a witness to the truth of the Resurrection. And they spent the rest of their lives bearing witness to its saving power. In fact, the truth of the Resurrection has been passed on for 2,000 plus years now by those willing to serve as witnesses to its power in their lives. Now it is our turn, privilege, and responsibility to serve as Christ’s witnesses. How are we, as Christian stewards, to do so all these years later if a witness is one with first hand knowledge? We may have to look a little more closely to see for ourselves than those first three witnesses, but we can have just as real an experience of the empty tomb and the redeeming power of the Resurrection. We “see for ourselves” when we prayerfully read the Scriptures knowing they are a living love letter from God with a message to each one of us. We “see for ourselves” each time we receive the precious Body and Blood of our Lord in the Eucharist. We “see for ourselves” when we experience His personal and healing power in our hearts during Reconciliation. We “see for ourselves” when we pour out our lives in loving service to those around us and experience the deep satisfaction that only comes when we are imitating our Savior. This Easter, don’t just recite the Creed. Resolve to live as if it’s true. Experience Jesus for yourself every day from now on. You will be a powerful witness to the truth that He is risen! He is truly risen!

Thank you for your consoling prayers and support! 6 Sunday, April 28, 2019 Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday)

Acts of the Apostles 5.12-16 More than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women.

Psalm 118.2-4, 22-24, 25-27a Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever.

Revelation 1.9-11a, 12-13, 17-19 I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever.

John 20.19-31 After eight days Jesus came and stood among them.

A REFLECTION FOR DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Helena Kowalska, born in Poland in 1905, entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Warsaw when she was 20. Received with the assessment of being ‘no one special’ and named Faustina, she worked in a few different communities of her congregation as baker, gardener, gate-keeper. She suffered a lot from ill-health and died in 1938 in Krakow where she was buried. A few short years later and not too far away from where she had worked at one time, a young Karol Wojtyla worked in a quarry in Nazi-occupied Poland. Later he became a priest and Archbishop of Krakow. In 1965 he would initiate the process of investigating the holiness of Sr. Faustina. Later, as Pope John Paul II, he beatified her, and in 2000 she was canonized by him in , becoming St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the first saint of the new millennium. So runs the very brief outline of this incredible woman, who lived just 33 years, and whose short life was to proclaim to the whole world the truth, revealed in the Scriptures, of the merciful love of God for each of us. She established the Devotion of Divine Mercy, gave us the portrait / image of Jesus as Divine Mercy, with the words ‘Jesus, I trust in You’; called for the establishment of the Feast of Divine Mercy on the Second Sunday after Easter; gave us the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and asked us to pray and meditate on Christ’s Passion at 3 pm., the hour of Great Mercy, each day. Her spirituality, which many follow, is to show a childlike trust in God, trying to do His will, and always showing an attitude of mercy to one’s neighbour. There is so much more: the diary that she wrote, the apparitions that she received, the humble life that she lived; these are there to be read and studied. Many groups meet each day to try to follow the Devotion to the Divine Mercy. The sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist are central to it. I personally have found it changing my life and I feel it has changed the lives of many more. It is a pearl to be found in our Church. Seek it out. – Noel O’Meara, C.S.Sp.

Ordained in 1965, Fr. Noel O’Meara, C.S.Sp. has been a missionary in Ireland and Brazil, and now works with an NGO for Africa which is based in Germany.
