I've tried to indicate what's required, what should be prompted on, and when specific terms are required. I can't anticipate everything though, so as a moderator, try and be fairly generous (if a specific term is required, though, that's what is needed for points). *If the answerline requires a film, readers can prompt players who only give partial answers by saying "what film is that in?" For example, if the answerline is something like "the hedge maze in The Shining," and a player only says "the hedge maze," the reader should say "From what film?" in that case. PACKET ONE TU 1. Film, History and Cultural Memory: Cinematic Representations of Vietnam-Era America During the Culture Wars, 1987-1995
FILM, HISTORY AND CULTURAL MEMORY: CINEMATIC REPRESENTATIONS OF VIETNAM-ERA AMERICA DURING THE CULTURE WARS, 1987-1995 James Amos Burton, BA, MA. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2007 Abstract My thesis is intended as an intellectual opportunity to take what, I argue, are the “dead ends” of work on the history film in a new direction. I examine cinematic representations of the Vietnam War-era America (1964-1974) produced during the “hot” culture wars (1987-1995). I argue that disagreements among historians and commentators concerning the (mis)representation of history on screen are stymied by either an over- emphasis on factual infidelity, or by dismissal of such concerns as irrelevant. In contradistinction to such approaches, I analyse this group of films in the context of a fluid and negotiated cultural memory. I argue that the consumption of popular films becomes part of a vast intertextual mosaic of remembering and forgetting that is constantly redefining, and reimagining, the past. Representations of history in popular film affect the industrial construction of cultural memory, but Hollywood’s intertextual relay of promotion and accompanying wider media discourses also contributes to a climate in which film impacts upon collective memory. I analyse the films firmly within the discursive moment of their production (the culture wars), the circulating promotional discourses that accompany them, and the always already circulating notions of their subjects. The introduction outlines my methodological approach and provides an overview of the relationship between the twinned discursive moments. Subsequent chapters focus on representations of returning veterans; representations of the counterculture and the anti-war protest movement; and the subjects foregrounded in the biopics of the period. -

Censoring the Silk Screen: China’s Precarious Balance Between State Regulation and a Global Film Market Jeremy Geltzer* Time travel, ghosts, and smart-aleck superheroes may sow the seeds of rebellion—or so the Chinese Communist Party fears. Motion pictures from Ghostbusters to Deadpool to Back to the Future have been banned in the People’s Republic for violating China’s opaque permitting process. Still, the promise of profit keeps Hollywood producers attempting to crack the censor’s code for a taste of box office lucre. As China increasingly influences Hollywood’s studio system, it is necessary to understand the largest Asian film market. From China’s centralized distribution and exhibition structure to the state-influenced regulation of content, recognizing the unique characteristics and aggravating triggers is essential for content producers world wide. China has long kept a tight reign on both traditional and new media to suppress potentially subversive messages that could challenge state authority. Since the beginning of the film industry, the Chinese government viewed imported motion pictures critically, concerned about the erosion of their national identity. Only a few years after the first public screenings in the West, filmmakers eagerly crisscrossed the globe, capturing exciting and exotic imagery and building bigger audiences. While European producers joined these film forces in the early days, the global reach of motion pictures has been associated with Americanism and the colonization of local cultures. Once the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took control of the mainland in 1949, a curtain fell on Hollywood productions in the region. Mamber, Chair This dissertation is about how the beginnings of films tell stories. Beginnings are extremely important for narratives, more so than has been previously acknowledged, both because beginnings are carefully designed to introduce story information in specific ways, and because viewers perceive, comprehend, and respond to information in the beginning differently than they do later in the narrative. Two primary questions guide its approach: What sort of storytelling principles are normally found in the beginnings of films? What sort of cognitive processes do viewers bring to films that make the beginning important for understanding entire narratives? I focus on classical beginnings in the American tradition, where “classical” refers to the mode of narration normatively employed by mainstream films, which strive for ease of comprehension and the concealment of artifice, and attempts to solicit easily accessible and precise aesthetic, cognitive, and emotional responses from viewers. ii I argue that the normative, formal -
