Suaidi Asyari A REAL THREAT FROM WITHIN: Muhammadiyah’s Identity Metamorphosis and the Dilemma of Democracy Suaidi Asyari IAIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin - Jambi Abstract: This paper will look at Muhammadiyah as a constantly metamorphosing organism from which have grown modernist-reformist, liberalist progressive, political pragmatist and potentially violent fundamentalist-radical Muslims. It will argue that the trajectory passed by and the victory of the radical-puritan element in the National Congress 2005 can potentially become an obstacle for Muhammadiyah's involvement in the process of implementing democratic values in Indonesia in the future. To keep watching Muhammadiyah’s trajectory is crucially important due to the fact that this organization is one of the powerful forces in the world toward the democratization process. In order to be on the right track of democracy, Muhammadiyah has to be able to cope with its internal disputes over democratic values. Only by means of coping with these internal disputes can this organization ensure its role in propagating and disseminating democratic ideas as well as practices in Indonesia. Arifianto* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The recently concluded 2014 legislative elections in Indonesia produced several unexpected results, as the heavily favored PDIP party failed to reach its electoral targets, despite the popularity of its presidential candi- date, Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi). • PDIP’s failure to win more popular votes during these elections can be attributed to the lack of campaign advertisements promoting Jokowi as its presidential candidate, local-level campaign dynamics, possible vote- buying, and the internal rivalry between supporters of Jokowi and support- ers of party-chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri. • The success of the Islamic parties in increasing their vote share dur- ing these elections is not the result of their increased popularity among Indonesian voters. Instead, it is the result of their strategy to recoup the votes they had lost during the 2009 elections. * Alexander R. The first one was the underperforming results of the opposition party the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan, PDIP), which failed to capitalise on the popularity of its presidential candidate Joko Widodo (popularly known as Jokowi). The party is estimated to have won only 19 percent of the popular vote, far below the expected 25 to 30 percent that had been predicted by a number of Indonesian public opinion surveys. -

Anak Agung Banyu Perwita. Indonesia and the Muslim World: Islam and Secularism in the Foreign Policy of Soeharto and Beyond. Copenhagen: NIAS Press, 2007. 238 pages. Michael Laffan We are often told that Indonesia is doubly distinct for being the largest Muslim nation on earth without being an Islamic state. Yet few Muslim countries are "Islamic states" if we take the premise that it is the implementation of Islamic law that defines the polity in such terms. I also suspect that the leaders of a bare minority of majority- Muslim nations ever base their foreign policy decisions on globalist Islamic sentiment rather than national or regional interest, unless domestic opinion is completely unbridled, which brings us to the particular book at hand. Following Rizal Sukma, Anak Agung Banyu Perwita, a senior lecturer at Bandung's Parahyangan Catholic University, claims that the major hypothesis of his book Indonesia and the Muslim World is that "foreign policies are ... influenced by the religious views and beliefs of policymakers and their constituents" (p. 2). Yet in this compact and useful set of essays, Anak Agung seems to have demonstrated the exact opposite. That is, the bebas-aktif (in his translation: "independent and active") foreign policy formulated by Indonesia's founding fathers has long trumped the religious concerns ascribed to or demonstrated by the majority of its citizens. More precisely, Anak Agung reflects on foreign policy actions taken in relation to a number of institutions and instances. These are, in order of discussion, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC, founded in September 1969), "the Middle East Conflict" (actually a series of issues and events ranging from the question of Palestine to the Gulf Wars), the Moro "problem,"1 and the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. -

Singapore: ISEAS Publishing, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, 2009. 452 pp. Julie Chernov Hwang To date, most of the published scholarship on Islamist parties in Indonesia has fallen into two main categories, either single case studies, often focusing on the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS, Partai Keadilan Sejahtera), or articles that assess the grand sweep of Indonesian political parties, highlighting the most significant characteristics of individual parties and addressing the broad trends in party behavior. While many of those studies are highly insightful and theoretically grounded, comparatively few have succeeded in balancing depth with breadth. Islamism in Indonesia is a robust comparative study assessing the three most significant Islamist parties in the Indonesian political system: Partai Keadilan (PK, Justice Party; also, since 2003, PKS), Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP, United Development Party), and Partai Bulan Bintang (PBB, Crescent and Star Party). While Bernard Platzdasch's book spans the period from 1955 to 2009, the bulk of his analysis centers on the transition period, between 1998 and 2002. Platzdasch contends that Islamists endeavor to apply Islamic philosophy, law, and morality to politics for very specific doctrinal, theological, and historical reasons. Hasil Naskah disetujui: 9 November 2012 dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa di dalam lirik-lirik musik dangdut Rhoma Irama antara tahun 1970-1980 terdapat nilai-nilai moral yang dapat diimplementasikan dalam kehidupan individu, kehidupan keluarga, kehidupan masyarakat, kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara, serta dalam kehidupan beragama. Di antara nilai- nilai moral tersebut adalah nilai amanah, nilai benar (a-iddîq), nilai kejujuran, nilai keadilan (al-‘Adl), nilai kasih sayang (ar-RaÊmah), nilai persaudaraan, nilai persatuan dan nilai toleransi (tasamuh). Nilai-nilai moral tersebut relevan untuk diimplementasikan dalam segala zaman, yang meliputi masa lampau, masa kini dan masa yang akan datang. Hal ini disebabkan yang menjadi rujukan utama dalam lirik- lirik musik dangdut tersebut adalah bersumber dari Al-Qur’an dan Hadis. -

14 The capital of pulp fiction and other capitals Cultural life in Medan, 1950-1958 Marije Plomp The general picture of cultural activities in Indonesia during the 1950s emanating from available studies is based on data pertain- ing to the nation’s political and cultural centre,1 Jakarta, and two or three other main cities in Java (Foulcher 1986; Rhoma Dwi Aria Yuliantri and Muhidin M. Dahlan 2008). Other regions are often mentioned only in the framework of the highly politicized debate on the outlook of an Indonesian national culture that had its origins in the 1930s (Foulcher 1986:32-3). Before the war, the discussions on culture in relation to a nation were anti-colonial and nationalistic in nature, but after Independence the focus shifted. Now the questions were whether or not the regional cul- tures could contribute to a modern Indonesian national culture, and how they were to be valued vis-à-vis that national culture. What cultural life in one of the cities in the outer regions actually looked like, and what kind of cultural networks – national, trans- national and transborder – existed in the various regions has yet to be researched. With this essay I aim to contribute to a more differentiated view on the cultural activities in Indonesia in the 1950s by charting a part of the cultural world of Medan and two of its (trans)national and transborder cultural exchange networks in the period 1950- 1958. This time span covers the first eight years of Indonesia as an independent nation until the start of the insurrection against the central army and government leaders by North Sumatran army commander Colonel Maludin Simbolon on 22 December 1958 (Conboy 2003:37-51). -

Democratic Decline in Indonesia: The Role of Religious Authorities Saskia Schäfer Abstract The Council of Indonesian Islamic Scholars (MUI) has exerted increased political influence in Indonesian politics since the fall of Suharto. Constituted by representatives from various Muslim civil society organizations, the council was originally intended by Suharto to serve as a political representative for Indonesia’s two largest civil society organizations, the Muhammadiyah and the Nahdlatul Ulama. This article argues that in addition to its own non-democratic structures and its fatwas opposing democratic values, the MUI has contributed to Indonesia’s democratic stagnation and decline in two ways: by undermining the authority of elected state representatives through its anti-pluralist stance and its epistocratic claims, and by imperiling the fragile but functioning balance of religion and the state through its undermining of long-established religious civil society organizations. Muzakka Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Diponegoro [email protected] Abstract The purpose of this research is to reveal the aesthetic values in the lyrics of the song by Rhoma Irama, especially in the lyrics of the song "Seni" and "Buta Tuli". Aesthetic theory used to study both the lyrics are Malay aesthetic theory formulated by Braginsky. It summed up the three spheres functions in Malay literature consists are a function of beauty (indah), pragmatic function (faidah), and spiritual function (kamal). The results of the analysis show that the two lyrics of the Rhoma Irama song are very loaded with these three elements of functions. Both Rhoma Irama song lyrics are arranged in beautiful words and reveal pragmatic values. Both values are raised to achieve the highest value, which is service to the Creator (God). Intisari Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengungkap nilai-nilai estetika dalam lirik lagu karya Rhoma Irama, khususnya pada lirik lagu “Seni” dan “Buta Tuli”. Teori estetika yang digunakan untuk mengkaji kedua lirik itu adalah teori estetika Melayu yang dirumuskan Braginsky. Ia merumuskan tiga lingkaran fungsi dalam sastra Melayu terdiri atas fungsi yakni fungsi keindahan, fungsi faidah, dan fungsi kamal. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa dua lirik lagu Rhoma itu sangat sarat dengan tiga unsur tersebut. Kedua lirik lagu Rhoma Irama diuntai dalam kata-kata yang indah dan mengungkapkan nilai-nilai yang bermanfaat. -

As a nation with the majority population in Islam, the presence of FPI in Indonesia than becomes controversial that separates Islam in some point of views. Republika is known as the modern Islam newspaper and Duta Masyarakat is traditional Islam and regional newspaper. How the Islamic media see FPI and their point of views are appropriately to be asked then ? The research method is discourse analysis by Theo Van Leeuwen model that will explore how a group or someone be marginalised. The Leeuwen model sees how actors are shown in media news through the process of exclusion and inclusion. The resulst of this research show that Duta Masyarakat marginalizes FPI and the fundamentalists as a threat of nasionalism. Republika assumed the existence of FPI is just alike other Islamic organizations, must be adaptable to the law and cultural context as regard to pluralism in Indonesia. Both do agree that Islam doesn’t allow violance but must contribute to nation building. CHAPTER III THE POLITICAL MARKETING STRATEGY OF PKB IN INDONESIAN ELECTION 2014 As discussed in the introduction chapter and the object description chapter of this study, which describes the political marketing strategy of PKB in the 2014 Election, for that there are some indicators that become benchmarks in the study. In this context, the author will discuss about political marketing and will explain how the political marketing strategy of PKB in the 2014 Election to win the legislative election. In this chapter, this research will explain the political marketing strategy of PKB by using the political marketing theory: Marketing Mix (4P) that was developed by McCarthy in 1960. The four points of the marketing mix will be broken down into several specific variables. The variables will show how the implementation of PKB political marketing strategy was. A. The Political Marketing Strategy of PKB Political marketing is a series of planned, strategic and tactical activities, long- term and short-term dimensions, to spread political meaning to voters. Political marketing is very important, because now political parties in any country have made political marketing a necessity in its campaign process. Political choices do not come naturally, it is necessary to attempt how a political party can attract its electorate. Eating political parties can then be sold into an attractive product, so the technique of peddling political parties becomes an integral part of a political marketing. 1. Product The main product of a political institution is a party platform which consists of concept, ideology, identity, and work program of the political party. Furthermore, the track record of what the political party had conducted also contributes to the creation of a political product.
