    Yuko Sawabe Dr. Eijun Senaha Scholar & Scholarship I 17 September 1998 An Annotated Bibliography: Vikram Seth’s Works and Related Criticism, with a Background Study of Post-Colonial Literature and Modern Indian History and Culture Introduction Since Vikram Seth is relatively new to the English literary scene, studies of his works have so far been mostly book reviews, and a critical consensus has not yet been achieved. Seth has been a controversial writer among his critics. Just as the genres in which he has written have been remarkably diverse--four books of poetry, a travel book, a novel in verse, a lengthy novel in prose, a book of translations of Chinese poems, a libretto for an opera, a children’s book, and a verse play, as well as various essays--so his critics’ opinions have varied greatly. Some praise him highly for the same characteristics that others harshly condemn. For example, there are opposing views of Seth’s aloof description of his characters’ emotions: some see it as a reserved detachment on the part of the omniscient narrator that well suits his direct and lucid style, while others regard it as a lack of passion that ultimately leaves his characters hollow. Likewise, some favorably compare A Suitable Boy to novels by Dickens, Austen, George Eliot, or Tolstoy, whereas others dismiss that idea as a blasphemy to the literary tradition, finding the comparison valid only in terms of length, plot, or number of characters. Although Seth has often been categorized as a post-colonial writer because he is an Indian who has written in English about post-independence India, some critics have pointed out his uniqueness in that category on the basis that Seth does not show a strong sense of nationalism or express anger toward imperialism, and that he is calm and conservative in style and temper, unlike many other more dynamic and acerbic post-colonial writers such as Rushdie and Naipaul.

Govt. College, Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh, India Abstract Vikram Seth’s poetry is formed by an anxious effacement of the self and a firm distancing of its intrusive scopes. It is differed by the use of older forms of verse and rhyme and meter, the sonnet. The predominant trend in his poems is an anti-romantic aptitude towards the world. His poems manifest how he moved his poems by her beauty, it is natural scene that is on demonstration in his nature poetry and not his subjective self. Seth often writes about the ordinary and commonplaces with a major deal of ease. There is a lightness of touch even when he reflects on more serious subjects, which makes for wonderfully refreshing poetry.     Literature Without Borders: Mapping Vikram Seth’s Cosmopolitan Sensibility Divya Pradhan Abstract This paper will examine Vikram Seth’s, Three Chinese Poets and Beastly Tales From Here and There, two works of translation and analyze them as texts which enable us to redefine the idea of translation itself by reflecting on issues of translation and cosmopolitan aesthetics. These two texts show that when translation is undertaken by a creative writer the roles of a creative writer, translator and creator intertwine and produce interesting results. The primary focus will thus be to explore and enunciate the cosmopolitan and globalized aesthetics as reflected in the act of translation. Key Words: Translation, Cosmopolitan Translation, Indian Writings In English. The Golden Gate, 3.37 Music has always been important to Vikram Seth. In addition to being stubborn and obsessive as a four year old, Vikram displayed another distinctive trait, as his mother tells us: He loved music, and could identify the 78 r.p.m. records even before he learnt to read properly. He must have assessed that I was tone deaf; when I tried to lullaby him to sleep he begged me not to sing. He stated that he only wanted my friend Koly . to sing to him.1 As Cyntha Haven notes, this youthful talent was later developed through training: As a boy in Calcutta, Seth was trained in the ― 63 ― classical Indian musical repertoire, specializing in singing."2 Music has also been a central feature of Seth's writing. Although Seth's poetry is dominated by his tendency to set himself apart, a poem such as A Little Night Music" (The Humble Administrator's Garden) is all the more affective and memorable because of the unexpected feeling of inclusion evoked by the music and the musician's welcoming gesture.

As per the information available in Who’s Who (1995-96) and other journalistic material the following note on Seth is presented. Vikram Seth was bom in 1952 in Calcutta, India. It is remarkable that along with his literary career he has had brilliant academic career. He educated at Doone School in India. At the age of seventeen he left India. Afterwards he saught admission at Tonbridge School in United Kingdom. He acquired a B.A. Degree from Corpus Christi College, Oxford and M.A. degree in Economics from Standford University. He spent twelve years or so in the States interrupted by two years in China in the early eighties.(\Th^fbre^)ie speaks and writes Chinese. He acquired a diploma degree in Chinese from Nanjing University, China (1980 - 82 ). Afterwards Seth lived in California for ten years. He has grown and experienced different cultural bases, India, England, China, and America. But he has always thought of India as his home as it is India where he spent more than half of his life with his parents Premnath and Leila Seth. Philip Larkin is Seth’s most favourite poet. His favourite novelists are Jane Austen and George Eliot. He has affinity with these two great writers, so he is compared with them. He stands as a new comer in the stream of Indo English literature. He has made significant contribution to enrich Indian English novel with respect to both theme and techniques. Seth‟s greatest achievement is the narrative voice, which is always self-effacing and utterly transparent. Themes and issues are presented with a steady consistency of imaginative objectivity in his novels. Seth‟s characters are defined not so much through a description of their consciousness, self-expressive or views of themselves. But through their relationship with others and other‟s view of them.
