However, he does not criticise Uttar Pradesh, India them bitterly as is done by Swift, or conjure up pathos like Dickens. Vikram Seth, as an emerging writer, treats a number of themes which primarily form the universe of his fiction. His preoccupations are varied: loneliness, alienation, love and passion, music, marriage and family, changing times, corruption, realism and nuclear insanity and disarmament, etc. The world of Seth is replete with frustration, destruction and disappointment. Seth is a brilliant writer and a master of many literary genres. He is a great writer who is worth reading and paying attention to in spite of the money that he seemingly makes with his writing. He has experimented his art with different genres of writing, but it is his novels that have brought him undying fame. The diversity and range of his works make him a rare writer. Seth has taken modern Indian English writing beyond the range of national boundaries with his appropriation of literary traditions from all corners of the globe. His purpose has been to absorb the best in the world culture and then to unite it into his writing. Seth has been quartered among India, China, England, and California. He has not only lived in these countries but also assimilated the culture of the countries in his personality as well as in his art. This assimilation enables him to successfully venture into the arena of global fiction, soaring higher than just Indian fiction. Seth began his literary career as a common writer, but his creativity caused him to soar higher and higher and reached the pinnacle of success. For Seth, writing is a simple business that has moved from its primitive course by an obsession with style and modernist knowingness. Vikram Seth himself says: “I don’t read lot of modern fiction, but it seems to me that too much of it is a thesis Corresponding Author: fodder. Abstract: Seth, a master of many genres at once is a poet, a travel writer, a novelist, and a writer of children‟s stories. He is perhaps the first Indian writer who is truly transnational. His novels provide a humanitarian worldview in the age of pop culture and global consumerism. A Suitable Boy is a true Indian novel in English. In its representation of linguistic inclusiveness, it reaffirms Nehru‟s secularism and nationalism. It elaborates the discourse of modernity in the third world, particularly in the manner in which this modernity is negotiated. It also addresses the contemporary problem of communal violence that has gripped India and the subcontinent in the post-independence period. Through a sub- plot in the text involving an inter-religious love story, it contextualizes the Indian political scene. As a result, the public and the private domains of the characters do not remain mutually exclusive categories.

  • Playwright's Notes
DULBINERS: A QUARTET an audio play suite by Arthur Yorinks inspired by the short stories of James Joyce NOTES FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT To acknowledge and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of Dubliners, the collection of short stories by James Joyce, The Greene Space at WNYC and WQXR (with the generous support of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation) engaged me to write four audio plays based on four of the Joyce stories. Well, to declare such an assignment a “challenge” is to linger in the land of understatement. Indeed. When thinking about the work of James Joyce, one usually alights on Ulysses or Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man or Finnegan’s Wake. It’s often, too often, the novels of a writer’s oeuvre that accrues the gaze and accolades, the bride to the bride’s maids, to the neglect of their short stories. And in some respect, I was guilty of such nonsense myself. I heard the name James Joyce and simply fell into a panic, a momentary intimidation. There were good reasons, I presumed, that his work served as source material for so few films and pieces of theater. At least so few in relation to how well-known and significant Joyce’s works are; works that ushered literature into the modern era. What would I do, I thought, with the terribly long poetic passages, what would I do with work so completely “literary” in their nature (and there are such works) that they resist and repel attempts at dramatization? Well, I purchased the cheapest most unadorned paperback version of Dubliners I could find thinking that somehow if it looked like an airport novel instead of a literary tome, I would have an easier time of it.

Charity www.bethestaryouare.org A Suitable Boy is an Indian fiction novel by Vikram Seth. This novel is a love story set a few years after India’s independence from the British and India’s partition, leading to India and Pakistan as neighboring countries. The heroine and protagonist of the story is Lata Mehra, who is a young woman studying literature in Brahmpur. The novel starts with the wedding of Lata’s elder sister Savita and Pran Kapoor. During the wedding, Lata’s widowed mother Mrs. Rupa Mehra tells Lata strictly that she will marry a man only of her choice. The novel is about whom Lata will marry, the man she loves irrationally or the man of her mother’s choice who is the most practical choice for Lata. A Suitable Boy is written in an omniscient point of view, allowing the reader to understand what is going on from many characters’ perspectives. Although this story is mainly a love story, politics and religion are also written about a lot. Lata has three siblings who are the easily raged Arun who partially takes the role of his father after his death and is married to the cold but glamourous Meenakshi, the soft-spoken and sweet Savita happily married to Pran Kapoor who is the son of the former Minister of Revenue, and Varun who is fond of horse races but very much dominated by his elder brother Arun. Lata does not think much about marriage but as the story progresses, she starts to understand its beauty and purpose.

American International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 6; December 2016 Transcending Nationalist and Imperialist Boundaries: Rushdie, Seth and the Politics of Emancipatory Feminist Discourse in 20th Century India Kavita Pillai PhD Candidate in English University of Missouri-Columbia United States of America Abstract Using Salman Rushdie‘s Midnight’s Children and Vikram Seth‘s A Suitable Boy, this paper argues that the restrictive rhetoric of imperialism, colonialism and nationalism worked as a subjugating force instead of an emancipating impetus that did more harm than good for the subordinate classes, in this case women. Both novels take place during India‘s independence and showcase the era‘s pre-eminent ideals of nationhood and nation-building.The paper argues that the novels follow the period‘s conversations on nationalism and highlight how the question of women‘s rights and place in the newly freed nations was a critical issue for the leaders pursuing a just democracy. I posit that this focus stemmed not from a genuine effort to promote equality of gender but from a reactionary mode of defense against critics of Indian leaders, who deemed these leaders ineffective in running a nation that would be safe for all its people, especially women and minorities. Keywords: Nationalism, Feminism, India, Women, Postcolonial, Rushdie, Seth Introduction In E. M. Forster's A Passage to India, Aziz joins the revolutionary chorus of a nation when he declares, "India shall be a nation! No foreigners of any sort! Hindu and Moslem and Sikh and all shall be one!" (289). But while Forster suggests that the colonial presence in India is intolerable, completing his novel in the aftermath of the First World War, ―he is clearly not convinced by the revolutionary promises of nationalism‖ (Teresa Heffernan 471): Fielding taunts Aziz with the remark "India a nation! What an apotheosis! Last comer to the drab nineteenth- century sisterhood!"( Forster 289).
