  • Craig Kallman
CRAIG KALLMAN CHAIRMAN/CEO, THE ATLANTIC RECORDS GROUP * * * * * * CRAIG KALLMAN Craig Kallman carries on the entrepreneurial tradition that has driven Atlantic Records since its founding by Ahmet Ertegun over 65 years ago, and is embodied in the careers of such fellow Atlantic producer/executives as Jerry Wexler, Nesuhi Ertegun, and Doug Morris. Craig joined Atlantic in 1991, when the company acquired his independent Big Beat Records label. Advancing through the executive ranks, the New York-born Kallman was named Chairman/CEO of the Atlantic Records Group in 2005. A passionate music fan, obsessive record collector (with an archive now numbering 350,000 vinyl albums and counting), and avid audiophile, Kallman began his music industry career while still in high school. He started out by DJ-ing at the Cat Club in New York, while working in Columbia Records' dance department. At Brown University, he was the CBS Records college representative, programmed urban and rock specialty shows on WBRU-FM, and ran a legendary series of campus dance parties. After graduating in 1987 with a B.A. in English, Kallman worked for Factory Records and Billboard magazine, while DJ-ing at such legendary nightspots as Danceteria, Area, The Palladium, and The Tunnel – spinning boundary-crossing sets drawn from his vast collection. Fresh out of college, he started the Big Beat label in his bedroom, selling dance records on the street from a shopping cart. He launched the label with the single "Join Hands" by Taravhonty. His second release, "The Party" by Kraze, was an international smash, selling over 300,000 copies, and prompting calls for Kallman remixes from such major artists as Soul II Soul.

  • With Ty Dolla $Ign Is Finally Starting to Catch on with American Audiences, the Singer Only Sees His New Recording Home As a Tool to Push His Movement Forward
August 27, 2015 Kranium And Ty Dolla $ign Premiere The Video For "Nobody Has To Know" "This is not your typical dancehall video." Kranium's "Nobody Has To Know" is one of the most enduring dancehall songs this side of the aughts. Since it first dropped two years ago, it's been a bashment mainstay, perfect for dark corners and sweaty summer nights. The Atlantic signee recently recruited Ty Dolla $ign for a new version, and today he's dropping a video to go along with the DL-themed track. In the brightly hued video, Kranium skillfully evades paparazzi on a hoverboard before scooping his (presumably taken) woman and pulling up to a trailer for a middle-of- nowhere desert romp. Ty Dolla $ign is in the cut too, rolling through on a motorcycle with a fat blunt dangling from his lips. "Videos need to be creative and I think we pulled it off. This is not your typical dancehall video,” Kranium told The FADER over email. Accurate. Watch the video above, and hit the clip below for some behind-the-scenes views. June 15, 2015 Is Dancehall Going To Be Mainstream Again? 13 years after Dutty Rock, people in the music industry are ready to make dancehall pop again. Will they succeed? Once upon a time, Sean Paul was among the biggest pop stars in the world. His tour-de-force 2002 LP, Dutty Rock, charted in the Top 10 both in the US and in the UK. Singles like “Gimmie the Light” and “Get Busy” defined a slice of early aughts pop radio and earned the Jamaican singer a guest feature on Beyoncé’s debut album.

  • Globalisation and Commercialisation of Caribbean Music
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Helsingin yliopiston digitaalinen arkisto Globalisation and Commercialisation of Caribbean Music Mike Alleyne Department of Recording Industry, Middle Tennessee State University In recent years globalisation has been identified, particularly by developing nations, as a source of major challenges, and in some cases a threat to their very survival. However, its musical manifestation precedes the widespread use of the term in political contexts, and the representation of the Caribbean’s popular music provides key evidence of this. A central concern of most small cultures is the assimilation and utilisation of foreign influences without distorting the content and representation of the local. Typically, the recording industry’s corporate motivations have been capitalist rather than cultural, rarely synthesising the two successfully. This raises concerns about the legitimate representation of the music and the communities from which it emerges, when commercialisation dilutes the art to the point where it may become only product. The homogenising tendencies of globalisation are frequently recognized, when, for example, the expansion of large corporations, such as McDonalds, impinge themselves upon the daily consciousness of the average person from Jamaica to Japan. However, where popular music is concerned, the encroachments of commerce are not always as readily evident, nor are their long-term consequences. This discussion attempts to shed some light on the historical and textual aspects of Anglophone Caribbean music and ways in which they are relevant to the music’s “authenticity”. Primarily, I will examine how some early forms of international commercialisation continue to influence the marketing and representation of Caribbean music, with a particular focus on the reggae era and the marketing of Bob Marley.

UNIVERSITY OF CHICHESTER Department of Dance Bruk Out Feminism in the Intercultural Dancehall Queen Scene by Celena Luz Monteiro, BA (Hons), MA (dist) Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2020 UNIVERSITY OF CHICHESTER ABSTRACT DEPARTMENT OF DANCE Dance Thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy BRUK OUT FEMINISM IN THE INTERCULTURAL DANCEHALL QUEEN SCENE by Celena Luz Monteiro i The focus of this thesis is the intercultural Dancehall Queen (DHQ) scene, as manifested between Jamaica and Europe, within the broader culture of dancehall. Dancehall is a performance culture that first developed as a resistant expression toward a postcolonial Jamaican climate in the late 1970s (Cooper, 2004). According to several dancehall scholars including Carolyn Cooper, dancehall articulates the condition of a working-class black Jamaican population. As such, much of the academic research on dancehall to date has focused on its relationship to its Jamaican socioeconomic and cultural context. Dancehall has also been found to be relevant to women outside Jamaica (Bakare- Yusuf, 2006b), but very little of the literature looks specifically at this dimension. This thesis sets out to examine the practices of Jamaican and European women in dancehall from an intercultural perspective, looking at the connectivities and tensions within this diversely positioned collective. The research, which used a reflexive physical/digital multi-sited ethnographic methodology, offers a model for conducting research into intercultural black feminist phenomena that span transnational sites and virtual/physical embodiment and connectivity. The methodology recognises the ethnographic encounter as a performative space between researcher and participant, and develops accountable strategies for reading silence and embodied expressivity, in dialogue with verbal, textual and visual research materials in intercultural research settings.

©2020 Michael Seth Cudd ALL RIGHTS RESERVED FUNCTIONAL AND LENGTHY: PREVAILING CHARACTERISTICS WITHIN SUCCESSFUL LONG SONGS By MICHAEL SETH CUDD A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Music Written under the direction of Christopher Doll And approved by _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey May 2020 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Functional and Lengthy: Prevailing Characteristics within Successful Long Songs by MICHAEL SETH CUDD Dissertation Director: Christopher Doll Successful long popular songs consistently utilize formal structures and compositional techniques that are inherently particular to them. As a result, these recordings differ in more ways than simply length, because there are “long song” characteristics that distinguish this music. In order to better discuss these characteristics, it was important to develop a method for visually depicting songs in a manner that clearly outlines each groove. These “groove analyses” are used to discuss each piece of music in detail. As a result, groove is a primary point of discussion throughout this study, because most long song characteristics are directly linked to this quality within music. This type of analysis is explained in detail, and afterwards, it is utilized throughout much of the dissertation. It is also hypothetically possible that the structures and techniques in question can impact the listener’s perception of time when used outside of the context of a long song. A simple experiment was run in order to better understand how these concepts influence a person’s sense of duration, and the results were promising and demonstrated trends that merit further research.
