Hansard Made by the Member for Couva South on December 03, 1999
183 Gloria Thomasos-Pollard Friday, January 14, 2000 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Friday, January 14, 2000 The House met at 1.30 p.m. PRAYERS [MR. SPEAKER in the Chair] GLORIA THOMASOS-POLLARD (DEATH OF) Mr. Speaker: Hon. Members, since the last sitting of this honourable House, it has come to my notice that a former Member of this House has died, and this person is Gloria Thomasos-Pollard. She had served in this House for a five-year period and her father had been the former longest serving Speaker in this Parliament. I thought that I should just bring this to the notice of hon. Members who may care to express condolences. The Minister of Housing and Settlements (Hon. John Humphrey): Mr. Speaker, anyone who has been in political life for as long as I have been would have known Arnold Thomasos when he was Speaker of this House. Those who, in fact, were in this House when he presided as Speaker would have known that he did not tolerate nonsense; he was a very strict Speaker. We could only judge that, as a parent, he would have been as strict and added to the strictness would have been the principle of love for his child. I had the advantage of knowing the late Gloria Thomasos-Pollard because I served for a while in the government in which she was involved. I must say that my knowledge of her late father and herself confirm, in fact, what I started saying that Gloria did manifest discipline, friendliness, and strictness, but she was a delightful person and all of us have fond memories of our association with her and also with her late father. -
Research Proposal—Is Explained Below
Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies 620: Seminar in Global Media PAPER PROPOSAL 3% of grade Over the course of the semester, students will develop their research and writing skills through a multi-step project. The first step—your research proposal—is explained below. Before you can write a proposal, though, you need to have an idea what a finished project might look like. Let’s check out this summary of a past undergraduate student paper. Weapons of Western Civilization Does first-hand • IMAGE SEARCH RESULTS – from two different search analysis of these engines, one US-based, one China-based, for a small set of primary media revealing key terms. Student looks at how these results depict sources (A) skewed visions of beauty and professionalism, and how the ways they are skewed match historic inequalities. Puts their analysis in • The global history of colorism. conversation with • Chinese beauty standards. secondary scholarly • The centrality of search engines for contemporary knowledge sources (B) on... formation. • How algorithms work and are part of Web 2.0 phase of internet culture. Thesis By testing the world’s two leading search engines, Baidu and Google, using the same set of search words (i.e. “beautiful woman,” “business man,” and “professional women”) I found that billions are exposed via the search engines’ algorithms to something much more sinister than “best results.” Instead, these search engines consistently reinforce colorism and inequality. As you can see, an original research project is built using (A) primary and (B) secondary sources. In other words, in light of what you learn reading (B) secondary scholarly sources, you will do hands-on analysis of (A) your media phenomenon. -

Outsiders' Music: Progressive Country, Reggae
CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s Chapter Outline I. The Outlaws: Progressive Country Music A. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainstream country music was dominated by: 1. the slick Nashville sound, 2. hardcore country (Merle Haggard), and 3. blends of country and pop promoted on AM radio. B. A new generation of country artists was embracing music and attitudes that grew out of the 1960s counterculture; this movement was called progressive country. 1. Inspired by honky-tonk and rockabilly mix of Bakersfield country music, singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan), and country rock (Gram Parsons) 2. Progressive country performers wrote songs that were more intellectual and liberal in outlook than their contemporaries’ songs. 3. Artists were more concerned with testing the limits of the country music tradition than with scoring hits. 4. The movement’s key artists included CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s a) Willie Nelson, b) Kris Kristopherson, c) Tom T. Hall, and d) Townes Van Zandt. 5. These artists were not polished singers by conventional standards, but they wrote distinctive, individualist songs and had compelling voices. 6. They developed a cult following, and progressive country began to inch its way into the mainstream (usually in the form of cover versions). a) “Harper Valley PTA” (1) Original by Tom T. Hall (2) Cover version by Jeannie C. Riley; Number One pop and country (1968) b) “Help Me Make It through the Night” (1) Original by Kris Kristofferson (2) Cover version by Sammi Smith (1971) C. -
1 "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music S
"Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979. -
