Erin Tamayo FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Executive= Director 3/2/2017 Arizona Faith Network [email protected] (602) 561-5483 Rabbi Bonnie Sharfman Arizona Faith Network Board of Directors [email protected] (602) 391-3079 200 Interfaith Leaders Issue Letter of Support to the Arizona Jewish Community Lifting up our dedication to stand in solidarity with one another in light of the recent bomb threats at 2 Arizona Jewish Community Centers ARIZONA, March 2nd, 2017– In response to the threats at Jewish Community Centers in Arizona that were suffered this week, part of the 5th wave of Anti-Semitic threats against the Jewish Community nationwide, Arizona Faith Leaders reach out in support and solidarity. A letter of support was quickly written by members of the “Faith in Solidarity” group organized by the Arizona Faith Network (AFN) under the leadership of executive director Rev. Erin Tamayo. 200 Signatories quickly signed on that come from across the religious, political and racial-ethnic landscape of Arizona. 3/2/2017 The “Letter of Support for the Jewish Community of Arizona,” authored by Arizona Faith Network board member Rev. Dr. Andy Burnette states: “All of our traditions call us to speak out with love in the face of hate, and to stand with those who are persecuted. Know that no act of hate can separate us from you. Though our faiths are varied, our commitment to love and justice unites us.” Rev. Erin Tamayo- Executive Director of Arizona Faith Network said, “as clearly stated in the book of Pslams: “Your kingdom is ruled by justice and fairness, with love and faithfulness leading the way.” It is my hope that our Jewish Community understands that we aren’t able to take away the pain and frustration that are being suffered in this moment, although we would like to. Instead, we prayerfully stand together in sacred solidarity in the face of hate and violence in any form. We work together, arm in arm, until this vision of a just, fair and safe community is achieved, allowing love and faithfulness to lead our efforts as we walk this path together.” ABOUT ARIZONA FAITH NETWORK – The mission of Arizona Faith Network is to bring together people of faith, under the inspiration of God, as a bridge to understanding and action. We are appalled by the recent threats against Jewish community centers and synagogues. We realize that these threats are only the latest in a long history of anti-Semitic violence in the United States and around the world.     In Support Of Keeping Houses Of Worship Nonpartisan August 16, 2017 Dear Senator: As a leader in my religious community, I am strongly opposed to any effort to repeal or weaken current law that protects houses of worship from becoming centers of partisan politics. Changing the law would threaten the integrity and independence of houses of worship. We must not allow our sacred spaces to be transformed into spaces used to endorse or oppose political candidates. Faith leaders are called to speak truth to power, and we cannot do so if we are merely cogs in partisan political machines. The prophetic role of faith communities necessitates that we retain our independent voice. Current law respects this independence and strikes the right balance: houses of worship that enjoy favored tax-exempt status may engage in advocacy to address moral and political issues, but they cannot tell people who to vote for or against. Nothing in current law, however, prohibits me from endorsing or opposing political candidates in my own personal capacity. Changing the law to repeal or weaken the “Johnson Amendment” – the section of the tax code that prevents tax-exempt nonprofit organizations from endorsing or opposing candidates – would harm houses of worship, which are not identified or divided by partisan lines. Particularly in today’s political climate, engaging in partisan politics and issuing endorsements would be highly divisive and have a detrimental impact on congregational unity and civil discourse. I therefore urge you to oppose any repeal or weakening of the Johnson Amendment, thereby protecting the independence and integrity of houses of worship and other religious organizations in the charitable sector.

    The Meaning and Message of the Beatitudes in the Sermon On the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Ranko Stefanovic Andrews University The Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew 5-7 is probably one of the best known of Jesus’ teachings recorded in the Gospels. This is the first of the five discourses in Matthew that Jesus delivered on an unnamed mount that has traditionally been located on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum, which is today marked by the Church of the Beatitudes. New Testament scholarship has treated the Sermon on the Mount as a collection of short sayings spoken by the historical Jesus on different occasions, which Matthew, in this view, redactionally put into one sermon.1 A similar version of the Sermon is found in Luke 6:20-49, known as the Sermon on the Plain, which has been commonly regarded as a Lucan variant of the same discourse. 2 The position taken in this paper is, first of all, that the Matthean and Lucan versions are two different sermons with similar content delivered by Jesus on two different occasions. 3 Secondly, it seems almost certain that the two discourses are summaries of much longer ones, each with a different emphasis, spiritual and physical respectively. Whatever position one takes, it appears that the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew is not just a collection of randomly selected pieces; the discourse displays one coherent literary theme. The Sermon is introduced with the Beatitudes, which are concluded with a couplet of short metaphoric parables on salt and light.

The Three Kings or Wise Men come from afar to lay their gifts before Him and recognize Him as the King of Kings. Their gifts at His birth of gold, frankincense and myrrh are a reminder to us of the reality that Jesus will give His life for us. He wants us to follow in His foot- steps and give glory to His Father by making His presence be mani- fested today in our world through our way of life. In all our human weakness, we have been called by God to let His light shine in us and through us for the world. He wants us to learn to die to ourselves in order to bear the fruit that will last for all eternity. At the beginning of this new year, let’s ask God to give us the grace to be the best we can be for Him and for others. Let’s ask Him to forgive those who have wronged us so that we are not bound by the sins of others but live the truth in love and learn to conquer evil with good.
