As manuscripts are completed they are published and given an individual number. Manuscripts must be peer reviewed prior to submission, after which they are again reviewed by the editorial board to insure quality. Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

The Glanville Fritillary on Sand Point: a History and Appraisal Matthew Oates Abstract: This article examines the nature conservation lessons learnt from unofficial attempts made over a thirty year period to establish the Glanville Fritillary, Melitaea cinxia, at Sand Point, a small limestone promontory on the north Somerset coast. Two colonies were established there in different eras. The first persisted from 1983 to 2000, the second from 2006 to 2013. These releases were conducted by persons unknown, who chose not to liaise with the National Trust, which owns the land, or with Butterfly Conservation or Natural England and its forerunners. Consequently, the details of these establishment attempts are not known. The two populations were, though, crudely monitored by the National Trust and Butterfly Conservation Somerset Branch, and details of habitat conditions, food plant availability and management events were recorded. Some conclusions can be derived, which may assist our understanding of the ecological requirements of this rare butterfly elsewhere, perhaps especially with regard to climate change. The ethics of clandestine butterfly introduction attempts are not discussed here. It is a Carboniferous Limestone headland which juts out into the Bristol Channel just north of Weston Super Mare, where the Mendip Hills run into the Severn estuary. -

FIT Count Insect Guide
Flower-Insect Timed Count: insect groups identification guide This guide has been developed to support the Flower-Insect Timed Count survey (FIT Count) that forms part of the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS). Who is organising this project? The FIT Count is part of the Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (PoMS) within the UK Pollinator Monitoring and Research Partnership, co-ordinated by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH). It is jointly funded by Defra, the Welsh and Scottish Governments, JNCC and project partners, including CEH, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation, British Trust for Ornithology, Hymettus, the University of Reading and University of Leeds. PoMS aims to provide much-needed data on the state of the UK’s insect pollinators, especially wild bees and hoverflies, and the role they fulfil in supporting farming and wildlife. Ten years later the genome of Melitaea cinxia came out as the third butterfly genome published, and the first eukaryotic genome sequenced in Finland. Owing to Ilkka Hanski, theM. cinxia system in the Åland Islands has become a famous model for metapopulation biology. More than 20 years of research on this system provides a strong ecological basis upon which a genetic framework could be built. Genetic knowledge is an essential addition for understanding eco-evolutionary dynamics and the genetic basis of variability in life history traits. Here we review the process of the M. cinxia genome project, its implica- tions for lepidopteran genome evolution, and describe how the genome has been used for gene expression studies to identify genetic consequences of habitat fragmentation. -

Impacts of agricultural management practices on the receiving environment are seldom suit- ably assessed because environmental monitoring is costly. In this regard, data generated by already exist- ing environmental survey networks (ESNs) may have sufficient capacity to detect effects. Here, we study the capacity of the Catalan butterfly monitoring scheme (CBMS) to detect differences in butterfly abun- dance due to changes in agricultural practices. As a model, we compared butterfly abundance across two landscape types according to agricultural intensification. A 2 km diameter buffer area was centered on the CBMS transect, the control group were transects located in areas where intensive agriculture represented <20% of the area; a treated group was simulated by selecting transects located in areas where intensive agriculture occupied an area over 40%. The Welch t-test (a = 0.05 and 80% power) was used to compare butterfly abundance per section across landscape types. The capacity of the t-test to detect changes in mean butterfly abundance, of 12 butterfly indicators relevant to farmland, was calculated annually and for 5-, 10-, and 15-yr periods. -

München, download unter www.zobodat.at Atalanta (August 2003) 34(1/2): 153-165, colour plates Xl-XIVa, Wurzburg, ISSN 0171-0079 Some butterfly observations in the Karaganda Oblast of Kazakstan (Lepidoptera, Rhopalocera) by Bent Kjeldgaard Larsen received 3.111.2003 Abstract: Unlike the Ural Mountains, the Altai, and the Tien Shan, the steppe region of Cen tral Asia has been poorly investigated with respect to butterflies - distribution maps of the re gion's species (1994) show only a handful occurring within a 300 km radius of Karaganda in Central Kazakstan. It is therefore not surprising that approaching 100 additional species were discovered in the Karaganda Oblast during collecting in 1997, 2001 and 2002. During two days of collecting west of the Balkash Lake in May 1997, nine species were identified. On the steppes in the Kazakh Highland, 30 to 130 km south of Karaganda, about 50 butterflies were identified in 2001 and 2002, while in the Karkaralinsk forest, 200 km east of Karaganda, about 70 were encountered. Many of these insects are also to be found in western Europe and almost all of those noted at Karkaralinsk and on the steppes occur in South-Western Siberia. Observations revealed Zegris eupheme to be penetrating the area from the west and Chazara heydenreichi from the south. However, on the western side of Balkash Lake the picture ap peared to change. Many of the butterflies found here in 1997 - Parnassius apollonius, Zegris pyrothoe, Polyommatus miris, Plebeius christophi and Lyela myops - mainly came from the south, these belonging to the semi-desert and steppe fauna of Southern Kazakstan. -

Few birds were seen in the early stages of the journey as we sped along the good motorways. Once we had turned off onto minor roads for the final leg of the journey we began to see a few raptors and shrikes. We stopped at a suitable pull in for a light lunch and to acclimatise to the hot dry conditions. Moving on, we were soon climbing towards the hilltop town of Castelo Rodrigo with its ruined castle on the summit. Our hotel was located within the old town just below the castle, where we were soon allocated rooms for our stay. Day 2 Thursday 23rd July Today we headed north to explore the Douro valley. En route we stopped at a roadside viewpoint which was opposite some cliffs where a small colony of Griffon Vultures breed. A couple of birds were seen below us settled on the grassy slopes, and there were a few ‘flyby’ individuals. -

Schurian, Am Mannstein 13, D-65779 Kelkheim-Fischbach Zusammenfassung: Es werden die Eier, Larven und Puppen von Polyomma tus (Aricia) cramera (Eschscholtz ) beschrieben. Am Standort auf Teneriffa wurden die Eier einzeln an die Blätter des Sandröschens ( Tuberaria guttata L., Cistaceae), in Gefangenschaft auch an solche von Blutrotem Storch schnabel ( Geranium sanguineum L., Geraniaceae) gelegt. Die Larven schlüp fen bei zirka 22° C nach etwa 8 Tagen. Die Raupen wurden ausschließlich mit Blutrotem Storchschnabel gefüttert und waren nach 5 Wochen erwachsen. Es wurden mehrere Farbvarianten beobachtet: einfarbig grün und weinrot, dazwischen gab es zahlreiche Übergangsformen. Die Larven verpuppten sich an der Erde, in der Zucht auch an den Wänden der Gefäße. Das Puppenstadium dauerte knapp zwei Wochen. Es wurde mit Erfolg eine Nachzucht durchgeführt.
