he Hon’ble Prime Minister of TIndia, Shri Narendra Modi took the Salute at an impressive ceremonial parade held at Cariappa Parade Ground Delhi Cantt by the NCC Cadets. It was a grand spectacle of pageantry marked with precision as also a vibrant expression of pulsating energy and excellence embedded in the smart drill. Hundred cadets from friendly foreign countries participating under Youth Exchange Programme (YEP) also marched along with their Indian counter parts. It was a true picture of aspirational India, on their journey to become worthy empowered citizens with sound values inculcated by a common powerful binding force – NATIONAL CADET CORPS. his year, spectators at the Beating Tthe Retreat ceremony were enthralled with the mesmerising and foot tapping music of the bands from the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the State Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). As many as 26 performances on the historic Vijay Chowk, mostly composed by Indian musicians thrilled the audience with patriotic fervour. The tunes rendered were ‘Singarh’, ‘Patni Top’, ‘Mony Musk’, ‘Jak Wilson’, ‘General Tappy’, ‘The Gael’, ‘ Scotland the Brave’, ‘Jal Nidhi’, ‘Yaman’, ‘Sky Lark’, ‘Veer Bharat’, ‘Pyari Bhumi’, ‘Take to the Sky’, ‘Victory Dhun’, ‘Air Force Colours’, ‘Benihal’, ‘Indian Fleet’, ‘Admirals Ensignia’, ‘Jai Bharti’, ‘Appu’, ‘Call of the Heart’, ‘Gulmarg’, ‘Drummers Call’, ‘Army Star’, ‘Abide with Me’ and lastly the ever-popular ‘Sare Jahan Se Acha’. Buglers will perform under the leadership of Sub Parbat Singh and pipes and drums bands played under the instructions of Sub Maj Gopal Singh. ‘Beating the Retreat’ has emerged as an event of national pride when the Colours and Standards are paraded. The ceremony traces its origins to the early 1950s when Major Roberts of the indigenously developed the unique ceremony of display by the massed bands. ‘Beating Retreat’ marks a centuries old military tradition, when the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms and withdrew from the battlefield and returned to the camps at sunset at the sounding of the Retreat. With the theme being 'Empowering Youth for a Prosperous Future', the event showcased various initiatives undertaken in the border villages by the Army in collaboration with Civil Administration for youth awareness and empowerment. A colorful cultural display by young school children from border areas filled the air with patriotic songs and traditional folk music. Young boys and girls came on stage to spread their message for a clean and green India. dmiral Sunil Lanba PVSM AVSM ADC Chief of the ANaval Staff embarked ships of the Indian Fleet (both Western & Eastern) to review the ongoing Annual Theatre level Readiness and Operational Exercise (TROPEX) 2017 which is underway since January 24, 2017. Gunnery shoots, Surface to Air missile engagements, Brahmos firing and operations of the combined Fleet in a complex multi threat environment including sub surface and air threats. The high-point of the exercise was Large Force Engagement (LFE) by the Fleet units against threat simulated by air element from Indian Air Force comprising AWACS, SU 30s, Jaguars and IL 78 (AAR). These threats emanated from different directions and were neutralised by using Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile capabilities of MiG 29Ks, the integral air arm of the Indian Navy, operating from INS Vikramaditya in coordination with other Fleet units. February 16-28, 2017 Sainik Samachar 11 Army Dental Corps Celebrates its 76th Raising Day

he Army Dental Corps on Tcompleting 76 glorious years of distinguished service to the Nation celebrated its raising day on February 1, 2017 with fervor in all Dental Centers spread across the three services at different places of our Country. In Delhi NCR region too; the occasion was marked by a series of events befitting the same and was attended by a galaxy of veterans and their spouses besides the serving personnel of the Corps. Dental health checkup camps were organized for the troops and their families by different Dental units stationed in Delhi i.e. ADC(R&R), AFDC, MDC Delhi Cantt, 1 AFDC, 21 AFDC, INMAS etc. The raising day unfolded with a solemn service at the Amar Jawan Jyoti paying homage to our martyrs thus rededicating itself to the Nation with elan and pride. Wreath was laid by Lt Gen TK Bandyopadhyay, VSM, PHDS, DGDS and Col Comdt with all posted ranks of Army Dental Corps at NCR. This was followed by a special Sainik Sammelan wherein the DGDS and Col Comdt conveyed his felicitations to one and all. An interactive and fun filled Barakhana was also organized with the first lady of the Corps; Mrs Swarnamoyee Bandyopadhyay and the DGDS giving away prizes to the children, wives and best workers of different trades thus encouraging them to carry on with the good work. In the evening, cake cutting and a cocktail was conducted primarily for honouring the veterans of the Corps. MDC(WC) celebrated the 76th Craising day of Army Dental Corps with fervor and zeal by organising multiple activities. MrLalming SM, 13 DOGRA, who laid his life year 2016-17 was organised by Chairman of village authority in village Parbung while fighting Aina Battalion under the aegis of Parbung was the Chief Guest. against the underground and safe Red Shield Division from 16 - 20 This tournament is organised guarding villagers of Tipaimukh Sub Division on 21 January 2006. Total 15 matches were played between 12 teams of Parbung region. The Tournament was based on knock-out basis from 16 January to 20 January 2017, wherein the teams displayed their highest degree of skills, talent and spirit towards the game. t Gen Giri Raj Singh took over as General Officer Commanding Bengal Area on January 25, L2017. Lt Gen Giri Raj Singh was commissioned in to the Army Ordinance Corps in December 1981. An alumnus of DSSC, HDMC and NDC, the officer has commanded a Div Ordinance Unit in J&K, Central Ordinance Depot, Jabalpur and tenanted staff appointments at various levels. During his illustrious service career, the officer has had a rich experience on all spheres of military functioning. He has held various important staff appointments to include Staff Officer in UN Mission, JDOS(PP&C) at IHQ of MOD(Army)and MG AOC HQ Eastern Command. Lt Gen Giri Raj Singh has been decorated with Sena Medal and COAS Commendation Card and is a keen sports man.

t Gen Suresh Sharma took over as Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army February 1, 2017. In his Lcapacity as Engineer-Chief, in addition to steering the Corps of Engineers, he served as the Principal Advisor to Chiefs of Army, Navy, Air Force and the Ministry of Defence on all matters pertaining to engineering works services, being head of Military Engineering Services (MES). The General Officer commanded an Engineer Regiment during Operation Parakram and has held key operational logistics appointments in an Infantry Brigade along the and an Infantry Division & Strike Corps in the South Western Theatre. He was assigned to the United Nations as an Advisor and served as Chief Operations Officer of the Mission in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Within the Corps, the General Officer has commanded the and Centre, a premiere training institution, and tenanted the appointments of Chief Engineer (Indian Navy & Coast Guards) Mumbai Zone, Chief Engineer South Western Command and Director General Combat Engineers at the Army HQs. Prior to taking over as the Engineer-in-Chief, he served as the 24th Director General of the Border Roads Organisation (DGBR), where he provided direction and renewed impetus to number of strategic border area projects. t Gen A K Das has taken over the reins of the prestigious Army Hospital (R&R) on February 1, L2017. An alumnus of AFMC and commissioned in 1979, the Gen Officer is an able administrator, an ENT Surgeon par excellence and a true soldier by heart. He comes with a vast experience of commanding two of the busiest hospitals in the Army. He is a Post Graduate teacher and Examiner of several universities with numerous research publications to his credit and has tendered the coveted appointment of Dean and Deputy Commandant of the prestigious AFMC prior to this.

t Gen Kanwal Kumar took over as Director General and Colonel Commandant of Army Aviation Lon December 1, 2016 from Lt Gen PK Bharali, VSM. Lt Gen Kanwal Kumar was commissioned into Regiment of Artillery in 1980 and joined Army Aviation in 1985. The officer has served in various appointments and terrains and has a rich Instructional Experience in both flying and Tactics. He was part of the first contingent of IPKF which flew into Sri Lanka in 1987 for Op Pawan. The officer has served in various theatres and has participated in almost all major operations, to name a few Op Rhino, Op Orchid, Op Rakshak, Op Malpa, Op Vijay in Kargil Sector and Op Parakram in Western Theatre. He has commanded an Independent (R&O) Flt and Army Avition Squadron during Op Vijay and Op Parakram resp and has had a three years Instructional Tenure as Directing Staff at the Army War College in Mhow. The officer has been Brigadier Aviation in Command HQ and Deputy General Officer Commanding of a Sub Area, Commandant Combat Army Aviation Training School, Additional Directorate General of Army Aviation, prior to assuming the appointment of Director General of Army Aviation.
