Og det var på din pokerklubb at min interesse for spillet startet for omtrent 15 år siden. ii Summary This thesis examines poker players learning processes, problems with combining poker playing with education, and stigma related to poker playing. Poker is a popular game, especially among male students. In 1999 it became possible to play poker online, and from 2003 to 2010 the global Internet poker revenues grew from US$365 million to US$4.99 billion. Poker was heavily marketed as an occupation, and several young poker players told the media about how they dropped out of education and became successful professional players. The thesis consists of this extended abstract and four articles. The first article is based on a quantitative survey from 953 pupils in upper secondary school. The last three articles are based on a qualitative interview study of 15 poker players. In the first article, I found that boys with good grades in upper secondary school were more likely than boys with lower grades to have played poker online with play money and live poker with real money after controlling for confounding factors (alcohol consumption, school affiliation and parental background). In the second article, I analyze the players’ learning process and the players’ variety of learning methods. I identified two different learning communities of practice (CoP) with different norms. In a friendly community of practice, the players were generous in helping each other and revealed secrets so the group could grow together. In a competitive community of practice, the players were more cautious, and misleading information was common. Online poker, as well as new technology, has made several new artifacts (learning tools) available for poker players, and their main contribution is to reveal information that was previously unavailable. Since poker is a game of information it greatly affects the players learning potential. I argue that after the poker boom, the players have gradually become more experienced, and only the players who value continuous learning and a variety of learning methods are likely to succeed in the long run. In the third article, I examined why some poker players struggles with combining education and playing poker. Since the relative poker skill is most importantly understood as how good a player is compared to her opponents, investing time is essential in order to succeed as a professional player. Both short term and long term success at poker has a negative impact on education, and for some of the players that started playing shortly after the poker boom, iii quitting school seemed as a rational choice. Since the population of poker players has become more homogenous and with a higher level of skill than before, the game was described as less profitable for the best players, and that might reduce a student’s inclination to drop out of education. In the last article, I argue that the society’s reluctance to acknowledge poker players’ competence might cause a lack of dialogue between players and non-players. Over time this may cause players to feel like outsiders. This could contribute to making it difficult to combine poker playing with the life outside and to get former professional poker players into education or other jobs. Previous research has hypothesized that there are cultural differences to how players relate to opponents with potential gambling problems. I identified three different approaches poker players may have towards suspected compulsive gamblers, and suggested that players from Nordic welfare states are more likely to empathize with compulsive gamblers than players from more market liberal countries. Combined, the articles provides an examination of what characterizes the players who start playing poker, the players’ learning process, how poker has affected the players’ education and long term effects (problems with relating to non-players and suspected problem gamblers). I argue that if the players’ competence gets acknowledged, it may be easier to start a dialog between players and non-players and get former dedicated players into education or jobs. iv Sammendrag I denne artikkelbaserte avhandlingen er det overordnede temaet å studere unge pokerspilleres læringsprosesser, hvordan de beskriver utfordringer med å kombinere utdanning med pokerspill, samt stigma knyttet til pokerspill. 2. Hvilket bidrag gir situert læring og learning in a community of practice oss for å analysere spillernes læringsprosess? 3. 4.

  • Die World Series of Poker Macht Sommerpause
Die World Series of Poker macht Sommerpause Von Elissa Harwood Es ist nur schwer zu glauben, dass es bereits zwei Monate her ist, seit die Lichter auf der größten Poker-Bühne der Welt angingen. Die 42. World Series of Poker brachte Dramen und jede Menge Aufsehen. Hellmuth verbuchte drei zweite Plätze (und vermutlich auch Platz zwei im Player of the Year Race). Andy Frankenberger, der WPT Player of the Year, konnte seinem tollen Jahr ebenfalls ein WSOP-Bracelet hinzufügen. Eugene Katchalov, Jason Mercier, John Juanda und Bertrand „ElKY“ Grospellier fügten ihren Trophäensammlungen ebenfalls Prunkstücke hinzu.

  • Can We Expect More Students Dropping out of Education to Play Poker Or Has Online Poker Become Too Challenging?
Journal of Gambling Issues http://igi.camh.net/doi/pdf/10.4309/jgi.2018.37.3 Issue 37, January 2018 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4309/jgi.2018.37.3 Can We Expect More Students Dropping out of Education to Play Poker or Has Online Poker Become too Challenging? Olav Niri Talberg1 1 Ringgold standard institution, Department of Education, Universitetet i Oslo, Oslo, Norway Abstract Poker is a popular game, especially among male students. It is known to be highly time-consuming and might lead to players dropping out from education. Yet little is known about why it is so time-consuming. In this article, it is argued that developing and maintaining the requisite skill in poker is a continually ongoing process and the game is highly competitive. If a player is not capable of improving at the same or a higher rate as his or her opponents, that person will be bound to lose in the long run. Twelve young poker players and three ‘‘old-timers’’ were interviewed about changes in online poker and problems with combining poker and education. A thematic analysis was used, which concluded that prioritizing between poker and education can be understood in terms of a weight balance; if a student makes enough money from poker, then quitting school seems like a rational choice. If poker income decreases, then education becomes more important. Several of the informants have found themselves having to choose between poker and education. This study argues that poker has become more competitive and less popular in the last five years, making it harder to succeed as a professional player.
