XC DEVILS Denied Return to States Season Concludes: Reflections from Coach Shader

QUOTE # 21. The cheers of an athletic contest soon passes away, but sincere friendships endure and last forever.

Our 2020 XC season has come to a close and we are grateful we got to train together, enjoy each day and each competition in all its glory and heartbreak.

YouCSHS are either Goes a pretender Hybrid? or a CONTENDER!! - Increase Blue Devil Pride!! in COVID-19 Cases? Haylea Thompson

Scheduling As I’m sure you heard when you got to school Monday morning, the Penncrest school district is going hybrid from November 9th, 2020- January 11th, 2021 until further due. The Penncrest school district will be participating in an A/B day schedule; students with last names A-K will go to school on A days (Monday, Wednesday) and students with last names L-Z will go to school on B days (Tuesday, Thursday). Nobody will attend in-person learning on Fridays. The block days, regular Wednesday and Thursday schedules, will no longer be active at CSHS as we will have a normal seven period day for every day of in-person school and virtual. Although students will not attend in-person learning for two days a week, the teachers are trying their best not to ‘rob’ students of their education, as Mr. Werkmeister would say!

CSHS - Sticking Together Things as simple as handing out the newspaper you are reading right now will definitely not be the same. With half of our peers missing and teachers not getting to see all of their students everyday things will seem a bit out of place for a while, but CSHS will keep the same positive attitude, and continue battling the COVID-19 hardships together.

Google Classroom Have you done your homework on online learning? This year students will be asked to perform at a much higher standard than when COVID first hit. Classes will not be an easy pass/fail and students will no longer be just checking in to earn some easy points towards their grade. Grades will still remain as if you were in school learning and new assignments will be posted everyday...be on the lookout! If you haven’t found your way around Google Classroom yet, the stream and class work tabs on the bottom of your iPad is a great way to start looking for your assignments.

Google Meet/Zoom - Virtual Class Meetings Many classes, like Mrs. Schultzs’ classes have the opportunity to Google Meet or Zoom on the days that the students are online learning. CSHS has asked students to keep their cameras off, but still participate in the class. It would be a good idea to practice Google Meeting with a group of friends so that if there is a time a Google Meet/Zoom call is needed; everybody is familiar with the app and isn’t lost.

COVID Vaccine cont’d from p. 4

Luckily, there are more than 170 vaccines being PITCHFORK STAFF: tested and 10 vaccines are in the last step before becoming approved.

When scientists are creating vaccines they obviously first need to create an experimental vaccine. That vaccine will then go through 4 phases of testing. The first test is pre-clinical and is tested on animals in lab experiments. Then comes Phase 1: testing on a small number of young, healthy people to assess the safety and correct dosage. Phase 2: testing on a broader amount of people, even people at risk. Phase 3 (the last step before approval) is testing on thousands of people to ensure effectiveness and safety.

For a vaccine to be approved and issued across the country the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) must prove it to be safe and effective. For that to happen the experimental vaccine has to prevent disease or at least decrease the symptoms of the disease by 50%. But every country's rules are different. Russia has already planned to start administering their vaccine to people in high risk in August even though the vaccine has not started its Phase 3 Senior Staff Writer: trials. While in China they have given authorization for their military to take the Jamie Corey experimental vaccine.

The progress of this vaccine might seem to be Staff Writers: moving slow, but actually the speed of these experimental vaccines being created and tested Audrey Bullock has never before been seen in history. With researchers in the United States setting a pretty Kara Culbertson ballsy goal of getting a vaccine complete and Kylie McCartney ready to be shipped out in 12-18 months. Which is about ¼ of the amount of time it took the Raegan Higgins mumps vaccine to be made (which was 4 years Haylea Thompson from the moment the idea was conceived to the moment it was approved). There are many Alix Hilburn contributors to why the Coronavirus vaccine is moving at unprecedented speeds; technology, Taylor Smith resources, better understanding, and funding all play a role in the process, with the government even investing around 9.5 billion dollars to speed Layout & Editing up the development. A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING : A TRADITION for PAY??? Something seems wrong with that picture. Alix Hilburn

For decades upon decades “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” has been a hit for all ages. Released on November 20, 1973 as a holiday special this short film has eaten its way into our hearts. For many families watching the film is a holiday tradition and no one thought that that tradition would be ripped away from us among many others by none other than Apple.

“A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” is a heartfelt film featuring Peppermint Pattie, Marcy, Linus, Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, and many other memorable characters. This particular movie shows the troubles of making Thanksgiving dinner with a lighthearted twist. Now I’m sure many of us relate to Charlie Brown when he states, “I can’t cook a Thanksgiving dinner. All I can make is cold cereal and maybe toast.” And here we see how that works out for him.

But now, thanks to power-hungry Apple, you may never see it again. And that goes for all of the other classic Charlie Brown specials too. Without having a smart tv, you are no longer able to view it on the ‘big screen’. Now of course you can download any streaming app that may have it and PAY. But who on earth wants to pay just to watch it once, maybe twice, a year? And on a cellphone at that! There is news that Apple TV will have it free to stream on certain days around the holidays but again, what good is that for those of us who don’t have a smart tv?!

In the end, it is a bit of a tragedy and another thing to add to the list of things taken by 2020.
