Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

So you have to admire the personal style of the country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons, who died 30 years ago this month. Parsons did for cowboy kitsch what Jackie Kennedy did for the Chanel suit. The onetime Byrd was also a pal of Mick Jagger's, an influence on the Rolling Stones and a mentor to Emmylou Harris. But while his famous friends lived to 401(k) another day, he checked out one night at the Joshua Tree Inn, near Palm Springs, Calif., a mere 26. Even dead, however, Parsons still had an adventure left in him. His road manager, Phil Kaufman, attained rock-music infamy by kidnapping and cremating Parsons' corpse within days of his death from a drug overdose. Kaufman says he was just making good on a pact the two made months before, at the funeral of a mutual friend. So he bundled Parsons' body into a borrowed hearse, drove back toward Joshua Tree until he was too drunk to continue, dumped the coffin by the highway and cremated his pal with a five-gallon can of high- test gasoline. If this sounds like a Hope-Crosby road movie scripted by Hunter S. Thompson, the same idea occurred to the ''Jackass'' frontman, Johnny Knoxville. He plays Kaufman in ''Grand Theft Parsons,'' a forthcoming film based on Kaufman's 1993 memoir, ''Road Mangler Deluxe.'' ''Parsons is up there with David Bowie and Johnny Cash for me,'' Knoxville told The Times last year.

Though most folks move through the streets oblivious to it, some people say they can actually see it. And they see it everywhere. ''Before me, gentlemen, Gram once walked down these streets, as sure as I did,'' said Billy Ray Herrin, a local songwriter who held a tribute to Parsons here last week. He was sitting in the passenger seat of a crowded rental car. ''Take a right here,'' he said. ''I'm going to show you the exact monkey bars that he used to swing on.'' Gram is Gram Parsons, the patron saint of country-rock and, beyond it, the catch-all modern folk genre known as Americana. Raised in Waycross, which he left at the age of 12 after his father committed suicide, Parsons lived fast, died young and left a good-looking corpse, a good- sounding body of work and a good-size cult audience that is about to see his memory taken to new heights. For someone who sabotaged himself so much -- who often put the musicians he worked with second to his musical vision, who could be difficult to work with in the studio and who got so drunk and high that he exasperated those around him -- Parsons still managed to be the force behind five of the greatest albums of the late 60's and early 70's.

Developing amidst the social and political turmoil that defined the era, country rock provided a space for musicians and listeners to negotiate both musical and cultural boundaries. This dissertation provides a critical analysis of the life, legacy, and music of one of the movement’s central figures: Gram Parsons. Since his death in 1973 at the age of 26, interest in Parsons has steadily increased such that today he is hailed by many critics and fans as the “father of country rock” and the movement’s most influential artist. Much of this posthumous recognition is rooted in idealizations of Parsons’s Southernness, experiences of familial tragedy, fusions of country, rock, blues, and soul, or what he famously called, “cosmic American music,” and the bizarre details of his death. Intended to forge links between Parsons’s biography, music, and idiosyncratic personal style, these elements have been foregrounded by listeners in a way that has allowed Parsons to transcend the limited commercial success he received during his lifetime to attain a nearly mythical status.
