NAX October Newsletter NAX Alumni Spotlight: This month’s alumni spotlight player is Maggie Peterson. Maggie spent three seasons at NAX with the Female Prep team recording 23 points in 68 career games. Maggie is currently in her first season with the University of Windsor Lancers and is majoring in Human Kinetics. Around the Rink: 99 former NAX players currently find themselves on junior or university/college rosters this season with the following breakdown: • 35 AJHL • 18 WHL • 11 U Sports • 11 ACAC • 5 CapJHL • 4 SJHL • 3 ACHA • 2 AJFHL/MJAHL • 1 BCHL/KIJHL/MJHL/NOJHL/NWJHL/VIHHL/NCAA Div 1/NCAA Div 3 Five NAX student-athletes were selected to represent Team Alberta Men’s U16 at the 2019 WHL Cup in Calgary. Forwards Billal Noori, Reid MacKay and Nate Danielson, who was selected as an assistant captain, helped lead the team to a first place round robin finish before losing in the semi-finals. Forward Bowden Singleton and defenseman Cale Ashcroft were unable to play due to injuries. The NHL Central Scouting released their 2020 NHL Draft Preliminary Players to Watch List and six NAX alumni found their names on the list. Congratulations to Carter Savoie, Carter Souch, Connor McClennon, Ethan Edwards, Luke Prokop, and Michael Benning. Carter Souch was the first of two former NAX student-athletes and current Edmonton Oil Kings to record their first career WHL hattrick in October. In two seasons at NAX Carter produced 34 points in 36 games. Dylan Guenther recorded his first career WHL hattrick on October 27 against the Seattle Thunderbirds becoming the youngest player in Oil Kings history to achieve the feat. The first overall pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, Dylan spent two seasons with NAX. Dylan was selected as the CHL Player of the Night following his performance. Thank you to Constable West from the RCMP and Constable Derko from the Edmonton Police Service for speaking to our players about drugs, alcohol, social media, and other influences teenagers face. Former NAX forwards Dylan Guenther and Matt Savoie will represent Team Canada at the 2019 World U17 Championships, November 2-9 in Medicine Hat and Swift Current. The following NAX alumni scored their first career junior/university goals this month: • Cassidy Shandro (NAIT Oooks/ACAC) • Lucas Ciona (Seattle Thunderbirds/WHL) • Marc Lajoie (Tri-City Americans/WHL) • Zack Ostapchuk (Vancouver Giants/WHL) Former NAX forward Lucas Ciona scored his first career WHL goal in October. Elite 15s alum Michael Benning was named the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week on October 7. In 19 games with the Sherwood Park Crusaders Michael has 27 points this season. Bantam Prep The highlight of October for the Bantam Preps was the Bauer Bantam Elite Invite Tournament in Abbotsford. The team finished first in their pool in round robin play before running into injury problems and losing in the quarterfinals. Forward Kooper Gizowski was named the Top Forward of the tournament. At practice the team worked on play with and without the puck, powerplay and penalty kill, in-zone offensive looks, shooting with our head up and individual skillsets. They also worked on their 200-foot game and quick transitions. In practice the team has worked on improving both the power play and penalty kill, cleaning up neutral zone play with and without puck, and offensive zone entries. In November the team plans on focusing on having a 200 foot mindset, improving compete, selflessness and discipline. At practice the focus was on close support, close support into breakouts, transitions in the defensive zone from stationary battles to loss of possession, incorporating the defensemen into offensive zone entries, increasing pace and execution level, and making and receiving passes in small area games and warm up drills.
