It's WHL Jersey Contest Time! It’s WHL Jersey Contest time! Next May one of your clients could be heading on an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Red Deer, Alberta, to attend two games of the MasterCard Memorial Cup. The Western Hockey League jersey contest will be back in participating brokerages in western Canada this winter. Purchase and award a WHL jersey as a prize, and your jersey winner will be eligible for the province-wide draw for the trip to Red Deer. One trip for two will be awarded in each of the four western provinces. Red Deer’s party preparations have already begun. The 2016 event will be the first MasterCard Memorial Cup in Alberta in more than 40 years. It will mark the 25th anniversary of the Red Deer Rebels franchise, the 50th anniversary of the Western Hockey League, and the 98th year that the prestigious Canadian Hockey League championship has been held. The jersey contest is just one component of the western broker associations’ WHL sponsorship, which also includes: . The Insurance Goal of the Game – During WHL regular-season games, insurance goals are announced to fans as “Brought to you by the insurance brokers of western Canada.” Scoring highlights are updated weekly on www.whl.ca. The Player Safety Program – Thanks to additional support from Wawanesa Insurance, brokers are also sponsoring an equipment-safety manual and series of training videos. You can pass these training aids on to coaches and parents in your community. How to participate: 1) Purchase an official jersey of your favourite WHL team (order form on reverse). 2) Display it in your office February through April and invite your customers to enter to win it. View from Moose Jaw The Moose Jaw Warriors lost 4-0 to the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday and they will be looking to rebound tonight in Medicine Hat. The Warriors are 9-9-1-0 so far this season and they are led by 2021 NHL Draft Eligible Ryder Korczak with 29 points (8G, 21A) in 19 games played and 2019 Anaheim Ducks draft pick Brayden Tracey with 22 points (10G, 12A) in 12 games played. After tonight the Warriors will return to Mosaic Place to host the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday night.

    PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES MIKE CRAIG – Lethbridge Hurricanes (November 14) Now a current assistant coach of the WHL’s Lethbridge Hurricanes, Mike had a highly decorated Junior hockey career, including winning a Memorial Cup alongside Eric Lindros with the Oshawa Generals, as well as winning a World Junior gold medal with Team Canada twice. He was also a first round draft choice, 28th overall, by the Minnesota North Stars. Mike would go on to play 423 NHL games for the North Stars, Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks, as well as 11 seasons in Europe. FRAN GOW – Hockey Alberta (November 28 and December 5) Fran is currently a Coach Mentor in Hockey Development for Hockey Alberta, as well as the Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Most notably, Fran is one of only three coaches in AJHL history to coach 1,000 regular season games. He achieved this great feat while coaching the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, Grande Prairie Storm, and Drayton Valley Thunder. Fran won an RBC Cup with Fort McMurray in 2000. MATT WENINGER – Hockey Alberta (December 12) Matt is currently the Consultant for Hockey Alberta’s South Regional Centre. He played minor hockey in Lethbridge before moving on to play three seasons in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He then accepted an NCAA Division I scholarship to St. Lawrence University, graduating as the school’s all-time leader in games played and saves, and was second in all- time wins and shutouts. His coaching career includes stops with Laurentian University (CIS), the University of Lethbridge (CIS), the Yorkton Terriers (SJHL), and extensive work for the Saskatchewan Hockey Association before joining Hockey Alberta.

Pursuant to section 74 of the Order the CMOH may exempt in writing persons or classes of persons from the operation of the Order.     Public Report To: Council in Committee of the Whole From: Stephanie Sinnott, Commissioner, Finance Services Report Number: CNCL-20-146 Date of Report: July 8, 2020 Date of Meeting: July 13, 2020 Subject: Oshawa Generals Request for Support for 2021 Memorial Cup Bid File: C-1000 1.0 Purpose On February 7, 2020, the Mayor of the City of Oshawa issued a letter expressing the City’s support, in principle, the Oshawa Generals Hockey Club bid for the 2021 Memorial Cup, Attachment 1. On June 4, 2020, the Oshawa Generals officially requested financial support from the City of Oshawa for their bid to host the 2021 Memorial Cup Tournament as outlined in FIN-20- 34, Attachment 2. The request is for the City to contribute $350,000 of in-kind services and cash as well as some capital infrastructure upgrades to the Tribute Communities Centre in order to be able to host the event. The Region of Durham was also requested to contribute $350,000 of in-kind services and cash. At its meeting of June 22, 2020, City Council directed: “That Correspondence FIN-20-34 from the Oshawa Generals requesting in kind and cash support for the 2021 Memorial Cup Bid be referred to staff for a report on the request including a projected breakdown of both in-kind and financial contributions, project revenues to the City from the event and the response from the Oshawa Generals regarding outstanding financial issues between the City and the Generals.” On June 29, 2020 additional correspondence, Attachment 3, was received from the Oshawa Generals indicating that through some new information they were revising their financial support request to $250,000 from the City and $250,000 from the Region of Durham.

  • Hockey Hooky!!
    HOCKEY HOOKY!! February 25, 2020 What is “Hockey Hooky”? Hockey Hooky is an annual event hosted by the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rogers Place. Schools from across “Oil Country” in Northern Alberta join us for an afternoon of hockey, education, and fun. The Oil Kings host a WHL hockey game, which offers an opportunity for students to combine the excitement of an Oil Kings hockey game that also offers a unique educational experience. The workbook issued at the door keeps students engaged as questions will be posted on the video scoreboard during each break in play. What is the plan? The plan is to leave the school no later than 9:00 am, on Tuesday, February 25, and travel by bus to Rogers Place to watch the Edmonton Oil KIngs play at 11:00 am. After the game, we will board the buses and travel home to arrive back at Parkdale before the end of the day. Please remember that Alberta weather and roads do not always cooperate, and if we arrive late your student will need to be picked up. Although this is an amazing opportunity to attend a game at Rogers Place, there is still an element of school. Students will have an assignment booklet that will need to be completed and handed in by March 03, 2020. Goals 1. HAVE FUN:​ For some it might be their first Oil Kings game, others it might be their first time at Rogers Place, others will be the fact that they are not sitting in a classroom. 2. Get a chance to learn in a very different way:​ Everyone knows that we are a combination of auditory, visual and tactile learners.
