Hanin Zoabi: In Her Own Words Hanin Zoabi is an Israeli Palestinian-Arab and a member of the Knesset (Israeli parliament), serving in the Balad party, since 2009. Read about who she is in her own words. On security cooperation between Israel and the PA against Hamas: “[Abbas]’s military coordination with Israel is a betrayal of the Palestinian people.”1 On the two Hamas members who kidnapped and murdered three Israeli teenagers: “[They’re] not terrorists. They are people that cannot see any way to change their reality, and they are forced to use these means until Israeli society wises up a bit and sees and feels the suffering of the other.”2 Giving advice to Hamas on how to defeat Israel: “We must declare popular resistance instead of security cooperation, besiege ‘Israel’ instead of negotiating with it, and unite instead of splinter.”3 Opposing Israel’s right to exist: “The national plan of our party, the National Democratic Assembly, consists of a fully sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, and a non-Zionist ‘state of all its citizens’ within the 1948 borders. Note this. In Israel they say to us: ‘Your solution is more dangerous than the one-state solution, because you want a state and a half.’ In Israel they say that we want another Palestinian state.”4 Despite these and many other anti-Israel, pro-violence statements, Zoabi is still permitted to sit in the democratically-elected Israeli parliament. 1 “Palestinians divided over Abbas’s condemnation” I24 News, Jun. 22, 2014. On May 31, 2010, Israeli commandos stormed a passenger ship, the Mavi Marmara, the largest boat of a flotilla of six boats which were carrying 10000 tons of humanitarian aid to besieged Gaza, in international high waters. The operation left 9 activists dead and over 30 activists wounded. The Israeli military assault against the Mavi Marmara immediately ignited worldwide protests and condemnation. Turkey, whose citizens were attacked by Israeli soldiers in international high waters, 72 miles away from the Gazan coast, took the lead in protests and condemnation. Israel, however, claimed that the demonstrators on the Mavi Marmara were aiming to break the blockade of Gaza and the Israeli commandos were forced onboard to react in an act of self-defense. During more than a year past since the Mavi Marmara attack, Israel has committed a chain of errors which started with the illegal blockade of Gaza. Using the blockade as a pretext, Israel intercepted the Mavi Marmara and used excessive force killing 9 civilians on board. Israel’s violations of international law were documented thoroughly in the UNHRC report, while the Palmer Commission penned a report with political rather than legal and humanitarian priorities.

The heterogeneous ethnic, cultural, educational, and religious backgrounds of Israelis created a range of political cleavages that evolved throughout its history and continue to shape its political climate and its society today. De- spite Israel's exceptional characteristics, we find similar patterns to those found for France, the UK and the US. Notably, we find that in the 1960s{1970s, the vote for left-wing parties was associated with lower social class voters. It has gradually become associated with high social class voters during the late 1970s and later. We also find a weak inter-relationship between inequality and political outcomes, suggesting that despite the social class cleavage, identity-based or \tribal" voting is still dominant in Israeli politics. Adalah's Post-Election Commentary: In Israel's elections, racism is the winning ballot The 2015 Israeli elections saw an unprecedented level of racist incitement against Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel, which played a critical part in the election's events and results. Regardless of the debates that will unfold in the follow-up to this election, it is clear that racism was the most victorious ballot. 23 March 2015 The elections for the 20th Israeli Knesset was not lacking in drama: media ploys, political realignments, and several surprises as the right-wing Likud party, contrary to many expectations, defeated the Zionist Union, considered to be a center-left party in Israel. The elections also saw an unprecedented level of racist incitement against Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel, a fifth of the population, which played a critical part in the election's events and results. This series of threats, intimidations, and attempts to delegitimize Arab citizens and their political participation, which occurred throughout the process, did not end until the polls closed on 17 March. The Prime Minister announced the latest election after the dissolution of the 19th Israeli Knesset in December 2014. During that government's term (2013-2014), the Knesset amended the Election Law, which raised the threshold required to enter the parliament from 2% to 3.25%. The goal behind this new law was to substantially weaken or exclude the three main Arab political parties, which ran separately for the Knesset, with each attaining 3 to 4 seats. In response to the new law, the Arab parties decided to run together as a single slate – called the Joint List (al-Qa'imah al-Mushtarakah) in Arabic) – despite their political and ideological differences.

It encompasses a wide range of civil-society and grassroots organizations. ∎ The campaign attempts to imitate the logic of the struggle against the South African apartheid regime – hence to undermine Israel’s inter- national legitimacy in a manner that would lead to its isolation and even- tually cause it to collapse. ∎ In its current phase, the campaign functions as a long-term effort to grad- ually change the discourse and mindset of Israel’s critics in the West. Its main goal is to mainstream delegitimization – hence to reposition anti- Zionism from the radical margins into the mainstream of Western liberal- progressive circles, with specific emphasis on critics of Israel’s policies. ∎ A key strategy to mainstream delegitimization is to blur the differences between criticism of Israeli policy and challenges to Israel’s basic legiti- macy. This includes efforts to turn items of the delegitimization agenda into an integral part of the political debate about Israel. ∎ As a result, many critics of Israel’s policies end up supporting efforts that are led by the delegitimization campaign. The discussion in the West on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is gradually developing into a dichotomous encounter between supporting Israel and its policies unquestioningly or supporting anti-Zionism.

Within the Bedouin population, the least likely to vote were residents of unrecognized villages, as 30.4% of eligible voters exercised their right.
