Sunday August 5th Heather Stafford Mrs V. Dennis Jane King COLIN GRAYSON 1934 - 2007 Born in Nettleham, near Lincoln on 23rd March, 1934 Colin moved to Castle Bytham in 1947 when his Mother and Father took over the village shop and Post Office. He went to Stamford School where, apart from doing well academically, he excelled at sport, particularly cricket. He was a contemporary and friend of M.K.J. (Mike) Smith who later captained the and Warwickshire cricket sides. Although he had the opportunity to go to Oxford University, he chose to remain in the village and work with his parents at the shop aided by his then girl-friend, Shirley, whom he married in 1956. They all lived and worked in the shop, baking bread and making cakes on the premises. Indeed, when their first child, Kimberley, was due in the winter of 1959, Shirley had to wait until the bread mixing was finished before they could take her to hospital and then the weather was so severe Colin and Shirley’s father had to dig the car out of the snow three times on the way to hospital. Their second child, Joanne, was born in 1961. One of the highlights of those days was the picture show in the reading room next to the shop on Friday evenings when they showed such films as ‘Old Mother Riley’ and Laurel and Hardy. They gave up the shop in 1973 and moved into the bungalow they had built in the orchard behind the shop, turning the rest of the orchard into a tennis court and bowling green. There they stayed until they moved into Glen Road. After they gave up the shop, Colin worked for Pearl Assurance until retirement. He then took a job with Bullimores at their Woolfox quarry where he remained until his condition made it impossible for him to carry on. Among his many other interests were Stamford School, where he was a long-time supporter and one-time chairman of the Old Stamfordians. He was a member of both the Parish and the Parochial Church Councils, both of which he served for many years. Indeed his devotion to the church, although very personal was long standing and he was Church- Warden at St. James’ for over twenty-five years. Colin died in the Brownlow Unit at Newton House Care Home in Grantham on 14th. April, 2007 after a long and distressing illness during which he was cared for devotedly by Shirley. We offer our deepest sympathy to Shirley and her family.

MICHAEL TWIGG 1969—2007 Michael Twigg was born in Grantham Hospital on 20th. June, 1969 and came to live in Castle Bytham when he was fifteen months old. Here he grew up and attended Castle Bytham Primary School for a short while before going to Bluecoat Primary School in Stamford and then to Exeter School Michael had many problems with his health, epilepsy and later diabetes from which he sadly died in a diabetic coma on 4th. March, 2007. He was a nephew of Gina Ellington, whose death we reported last month and cousin to Jodie Brown who was killed, with her boy friend in an accident on the A1 on 12th. May. We offer our sympathy to the family in these very sad losses. Preparations are well advanced to ensure this year’s event will be bigger, better and more fun than ever. A schedule of classes and arrangements, together with an entry form, is enclosed with this issue of Glenside News. There is something for everyone at the show; it is not purely horticultural skills on show, but art, crafts, cookery and flower arranging. And of course there are classes for the children. There is even a class for the best bucket of home-grown compost, so no excuses, there are classes for everyone’s talents! The prize list for 2007 is bigger than ever. In addition to cash prizes for 1s t , 2n d and 3r d in every class, there are garden tools, equipment and vouchers to be won from the show’s generous sponsors listed in the schedule and two new handsome challenge trophies have been donated. We look forward to seeing you on the day. Entries should be made by noon on Thursday 26t h July and any enquiries can be made by calling Ken or Lin Achard on ‘BOMBS AND BLACKBERRIES’ 01780 411112.. Niamh Tye The unwed Irish girl settles down in the confessional and begins: It’s a shameful thing I have to confess Father. I am pregnant. Are you sure it’s yours? says the priest. An atheist was taking a walk through the woods. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he said to himself. As he continued walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes. Turning to look, he saw a 7 foot grizzly charging towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. Looking over his shoulder he saw that the bear was closing in on him. His heart was pumping frantically and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear raising his paw to take a swipe at him. At that instant the atheist cried out: "Oh my God!..." Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. It was then that bright light shone upon the man and a voice came out of the sky saying, "You deny my existence for all of these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?" The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps, could you make the bear a Christian?" "Very well," said the voice. The light went out. And the sounds of the forest resumed. And then the bear lowered his paw, bowed his head and spoke, "Lord, bless this food which I am about to receive and for which I am truly thankful."
