Pakistan Was Suspended by President General Musharaff in March Last Year Leading to a Worldwide Uproar Against This Act
A Coup against Judicial Independence . Special issue of the CJEI Report (February, 2008) ustice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the twentieth Chief Justice of Pakistan was suspended by President General Musharaff in March last year leading to a worldwide uproar against this act. However, by a landmark order J handed down by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Justice Chaudhry was reinstated. We at the CJEI were delighted and hoped that this would put an end to the ugly confrontation between the judiciary and the executive. However our happiness was short lived. On November 3, 2007, President General Musharaff suspended the constitution and declared a state of emergency. Soon the Pakistan army entered the Supreme Court premises removing Justice Chaudhry and other judges. The Constitution was also suspended and was replaced with a “Provisional Constitutional Order” enabling the Executive to sack Chief Justice Chaudhry, and other judges who refused to swear allegiance to this extraconstitutional order. Ever since then, the judiciary in Pakistan has been plunged into turmoil and Justice Chaudhry along with dozens of other Justices has been held incommunicado in their homes. Any onslaught on judicial independence is a matter of grave concern to all more so to the legal and judicial fraternity in countries that are wedded to the rule of law. In the absence of an independent judiciary, human rights and constitutional guarantees become meaningless; the situation capable of jeopardising even the long term developmental goals of a country. As observed by Viscount Bryce, “If the lamp of justice goes out in darkness, how great is the darkness.” This is really true of Pakistan which is presently going through testing times. -

Defying Marginalization: Emergence of Women’s Organizations and the Resistance Movement in Pakistan: A Historical Overview By Rahat Imran1 and Imran Munir2 Abstract In the wake of Pakistani dictator General-Zia-ul-Haq’s Islamization process (1977-1988), the country experienced an unprecedented tilt towards religious fundamentalism. This initiated judicial transformations that brought in rigid Islamic Sharia laws that impacted women’s freedoms and participation in the public sphere, and gender-specific curbs and policies on the pretext of implementing a religious identity. This suffocating environment that eroded women’s rights in particular through a recourse to politicization of religion also saw the emergence of equally strong resistance, particularly by women who, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, grouped and mobilized an organized activist women’s movement to challenge Zia’s oppressive laws and authoritarian regime. -

SUCCESS STORIES ZEBRA FOALS HEALED: In September, 2013, two of the zebra foals were found suffering from a bilateral nasal discharge alongwith submandibular swellings. The sick animals were immediately captured for the collection of blood and nasal samples. Treatment was initiated and the animals were darted on daily basis to ensure a regular administration of antibiotic followed by a couple of physical captures for the drainage and dressings of submandibular abscesses. A visit of the team of veterinaries from UVAS and VRI was also arranged for an expert advice and they also suggested the continuity of the ongoing treatment protocol. -

Politically engaged environmental histories with a global perspective can play a central role in addressing these contempo- rary concerns by exploring the historical dimensions of our shared crisis. This series encourages scholarship from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities that, crosses disciplines and reconceptualises the way we think about human-nature relations in time and space. It promotes historical studies that investigate all parts of the globe and all manner of environments, periods and concerns, especially in the global south, including topics such as arable and non-arable landscapes, the built environment, the Anthropocene, atmospheric and hydrological systems and animal-human interactions. We welcome, in particular, frameworks which can link environmental histories with science and technology studies.
