FOREWORD The bringing out of the District Census Handbooks is one of the various ways in which the State Govern­ ment collaborates with the Government of India in the work of census-taking and the dissemination of the resulting information. While the various census publications give a lot of diverse and detailed information for the bigger units of administration i.e. state, district, tebsil and town, it is left to these District Census Handbooks to present some vital data for the stUllower units i.e. "ards and blocks in towns and villages in tehsils. Secondly, these handbooks present some non-census data also which is collected and processed in addition to the normal census operations. The present series of District Census Handbook volumes combine parts A and B of the handbooks for each district. Part C, consisting of some other census tables at tehsil and town level as well as some other data, will appear in the form of a separate series. I am gratified to note that Shri V. S. Verma, Director Census Operations, Rajasthan and his colleagues have endeavoured to bring out these exhaustive and inf"rmahve volumes with precision and promptitude. I am happy to learn that the maps being included in the various district volumes are also to be published later on in the form of a comprehensive Administrative Atlas of the state. I am sure, these publications will be found useful and interesting by scholars and admmistrators as well as the lay reader. Jaipur S. L. KHURANA 2nd, ~ber, 1972 Chief Sec1Itary to the Go'ernment of RDjQJlhan PREFACE Tbe District Census Handbooks are a special and important feature of tbe wbole scbeme of CeDSUS data collection and the analysis and presentation tbereof. The regular Censul publications do, of coune, present a multitudinous information but tbey do not go upto tbe Village and Census Block levels. for the rural and urban areas respectively. Secondly, they bave to depend on the data coUccted only as a part of tbe House­ listing and Enumeration Operations. Tbe twofold purpose of the Di!ltrict Census Handbooks, like tbat of certain otber special and ancillary studies that tbe Department undertakes, therefore, is to go down to these lower units of presentation and to present some data whicb is collected in addition to tbat produced by the above mentioned operations. The District Handbook series were first introduced in the 1951 Censuli. Wbile tbe 1961 series were an improvement over tbeir counterparts in 1951, the present series for tbe 1971 Census are more elaborate and have been so planned tbat they present all tbe essential Census data and important demographic details alongwitb sucb necessary orientation and background whicb -is very relevant for the proper understanding of a district. 1971 Census envisages the publication of District Census Handbooks in three parts viz. A, Band C for all the districts of Rajasthan. The first two of these are being presented In this series of volumes, eacb volume dealing witb one district of the State, because these two parts have mucb in common and they present infor­ mation wbich the reader might like to interlink at various stages in his study. Part C, containing both tbe data collected from the various dapartments of the State Government as well as certain Census tables, districtwise and down to the level of tehsils, will appear as a separate series of volumes, again, one for eacb district. Parts A & B have been explained in detail in the respective introductions pertaining thereto. For the sake of convenience and better presentability tbis volume has been divided into three sections, viz. Town and Village Directories, Primary Census Abstract and certain commo~ appendices and maps. A look at the Contents will further elucidate this arrangement. This Department has produced these District Census Handbooks for and on behalf of the Government of Rajasthan. We are grateful to the unfailing assistance and encouragement which we have received at each stage from the Chief Secretary, Sbri S. L. Khurana, and the Deputy Secretary in the General Administration Department Sbri D. R. Mehta. The ex-Chief Secretary Sbri Z. S. Jbala and tbe ex-Deputy Secretary Sbri Yatindra Singh also gave us valuable advice and support during the earlier stages of this work. We are also grateful to Shri Khurana for having consented to write a Foreword for this series of volumes. As regards the whole scheme of these volumes and their contents, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to the guidance we have received from Shri A. Chandra Sekhar, Registrar General of India, Dr. B.K. Roy Burman, Deputy Registrar General of India, Social Studies, and Dr. B.K. Roy. Map Officer. Shri Jagat Pal Singh, Deputy Director. Social Studies. and a team of dedicated workers including Shri Shamsher Singb, Tabulation Officer, and Shri Wali Haider, Statistical Assistant: have laboured really hard to give shape to the Town and Village Directories witb the help of heaps of data collected from various sources. For the Primary Census Abstract the credit goes to Dr. U. B. Matbur, Deputy Director Headquarters, Shri S.R. Luhadia, Assistant Director. Shri R.C. Bbargava, Senior Investigator and Shri S. P. Kashyap, Senior Technical Assistant, and the persons working in Technical Section. Shri Kasbyap will Soon be retiring and I will like to place on record bere my gratitude aDd admirdtion for his bard and consistent work. The Art Section bad to carry a tremendous load in preparing the maps going with these volumes. I am happy to say that tbe band of old and experienced hands as well as the new recruits bave risen to the occasion in an admirable manner under the supervison of Dr. R.K. Tyagi, Geograpber. Unlike India's major sacred waterways such as the Ganga and the Yamuna which have the status of goddesses, the Nagdi was never deified. However, within living memories the Nagdi displayed miraculous properties, and it figures in Jahazpur's origin legend, reaching back to the epic Mahabharata. At present, due to a complex convergence of conditions unique to this place but strongly resonant with ecological tragedies the world over, the Nagdi's flow has dwindled and its waters are badly polluted. Many in Jahazpur mourned the end of their river. Once proud of the Nagdi's miraculous properties, Jahazpur residents were aware of having lost an important part of their environmental and cultural heritage. Several activists have initiated or participated in movements to save the Nagdi, but most of these defenders have given up hope. This presentation explores the complex causalities of the Nagdi's deterioration and emergent possibilities for restoration. Ann Grodzins Gold is Thomas J. Watson Professor of Religion and Professor of Anthropology at Syracuse University. Gold's fieldwork in rural Rajasthan, North India, has focused on pilgrimage, gender, expressive traditions, and environmental history.

INTRODUCTION The meeting of the Project Approval Board (PAB) for considering the Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWP&B) 2018-19 under Samagra Shiksha for the State of Rajasthan was held on 14-06-2018. The list of participants who attended the meeting is attached at Annexure-I. Sh Maneesh Garg, Joint Secretary (SE&L) welcomed the participants and the State representatives led by Shri Naresh Pal Gangwar, Secretary (Education), Government of Rajasthan and invited them to share some of the initiatives undertaken by the State. 2. INITIATIVES OF THE STATE Adarsh and Utkrisht Vidyalaya Yojana: An Adarsh Vidyalaya (KG/Anganwadi-XII) has been developed in each Gram Panchayat as center of excellence. An Utkrisht Vidyalaya (KG/Anganwadi-VIII) has also been developed in each Gram Panchayat under the mentorship of Adarsh school to ensure quality school coverage for other villages in the Gram Panchayat. Panchayat Elementary Education Officer- Principals of Adarsh school have been designated as ex-officio Panchayat Elementary Education Officer (PEEO) to provide leadership and mentorship to all other government elementary schools in the Gram Panchayat. These PEEOs have been designated as Cluster Resource Centre Facilitator (CRCF) for effective monitoring. Integration of Anganwadi centers with schools- Around 38000 Anganwadi centers have been integrated with schools having primary sections for improving pre-primary education under ECCE program of ICDS.
