WEB.COM TOUR STORYLINES – Week of July 23rd NATIONWIDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL INVITATIONAL July 26-29 Ohio State University/Scarlet Course, Columbus, Ohio Purse: $800,000 First Prize: $144,000 2011 Champion: Harris English (amateur) 144 players, including college All-Americans and reigning U.S. Amateur champion 15 th of 27 events Golf Channel to televise all four rounds CHAMPS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC – Ernie Els (British Open) and Scott Stallings (True South Classic) added PGA TOUR wins Nos. 337 and 338 to the Web.com Tour’s victory tally on the PGA TOUR on Sunday. Alums have won the last four TOUR events and 10 of the last 14, for a total of 18 thus far in 2012. While it was many years ago when Els played the Web.com Tour – 1991 to be exact – last year he looked back fondly on his days playing the Tour. “I was learning the game under different conditions and courses. You travel to all different places and tend to bond more with other players. You get to see the other side of America. I remember my time on the Web.com Tour with a great deal of affection. It really is a great way to prepare yourself as a player and a person for what lies ahead.” Congratulations to both Ernie and Scott! RUN TO THE WEB.COM TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS – The Web.com Tour embarks on a run of 13 tournaments over the next 14 weeks, culminating in late October at the season’s finale, the Web.com Tour Championship at TPC Craig Ranch near Dallas, Texas, where this year’s “25” will be determined. Nine of the events will be televised on Golf Channel. The only off week is Sept. 3-9. WILL ALL-AMERICAN WINNING TRADITION CONTINUE? – This week’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational continues its unique tradition of inviting the top players from the college golf ranks. Two of the first five Invitationals have been won by collegians – Daniel Summerhays in 2007 and Harris English last year (by one over fellow All-American John Peterson of LSU). Leading this year’s strong group is Jack Nicklaus Award winner (top player in college golf) Justin Thomas , a sophomore-to-be at the University of Alabama. The final lineup of 12 players includes: • Justin Thomas (U. of Alabama) – 1st team All-American / Jack Nicklaus Award winner • Blayne Barber (Auburn U.) – 1st team • Luke Guthrie (U. of Illinois) – 2nd team • Stephan Jaeger (U. of Tennesse - Chattanooga) – 1st team • Ben Kohles (U. of Virginia) – 2nd team • Kelly Kraft (SMU) – Reigning U.S. Amateur champion • Daniel Miernicki (U. of Oregon) – 1st team • Patrick Rodgers (Stanford U.) – 1st team • Jordan Spieth (U. of Texas) – 1st team • Cory Whitsett (U. of Alabama) – 2nd team • Chris Williams (U. of Washington) – 1st team • Andrew Yun (Stanford U.) – 2nd team Luke Guthrie got into the field when Dylan Frittelli of the University of Texas withdrew. The lefty from Quincy, Ill. has had a solid summer, making nearly $285,000 in three recent PGA TOUR starts – T19 (FedEx St. Jude), T5 (John Deere) and T18 (True South). A first-team All-American last year, Guthrie competed at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course last year (missed cut). MORGAN HOFFMANN PURSUES SPECIAL TEMPORARY MEMBERSHIP – Morgan Hoffmann , who has already played in two Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational events under the All-American criteria, is in a very good spot to secure Special Temporary Membership on the Web.com Tour. The 22-year-old Oklahoma State University product had no Web.com Tour access to start the year. Top 10s in the last two events (United Leasing Championship/T4 and Utah Championship/T9) have increased his earnings in five total starts this year to $39,285. If the New Jersey native reaches $43,293 (100 th on last year’s money list) after Columbus, he will gain STM status and be in a much better position to earn his 2013 PGA TOUR card via “The 25”. A finish of 38th or better this week will earn Hoffmann the $4,008 he needs. If past experience at the Scarlet Course is any indicator, the odds are in his favor. Hoffmann finished T8 there in 2009 and T9 in 2010. RBC CANADIAN OPEN INVITES – Web.com Tour members and Canada natives Brad Fritsch of Manotick, Ont. and Adam Hadwin of Abbottsford, B.C. have received sponsor exemptions to play in this week’s PGA TOUR event, the RBC Canadian Open. A third member, Richard Scott of Kingsville, Ont., elected to pass on his invitation to play in the event. Scott is 28 th on the current Web.com Tour money list. Fritsch is 40 th and Hadwin 55 th . STAR-STUDDED KICK OFF – The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational got off to its usual strong start on Monday with the Copart Celebrity Pro-Am at Muirfield Village Golf Club, with former Ohio State and NBA star Clark Kellogg as the host. Among the 30 current or former stars from the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB and NASCAR who teed it up were Nationwide Series drivers Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Justin Allgaier (who finished 2-3 in Sunday’s race near Chicago), former hoop stars Junior Bridgeman, Austin Carr, Michael Conley, Ralph Sampson, Brad Sellers, Herb Williams and Denver Nuggets coach George Karl , and former OSU gridiron greats Keith Byars, Archie Griffin, John Hicks and former coach John Cooper . STRONG CHARITY PUSH IN COLUMBUS – In addition to featuring many of golf’s most talented collegiate players, the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational stands out by generating nearly $4.3 million for charity in its first five years, including $640,000 last year. WEB.COM TOUR STAFF MOVES – PGA TOUR Operations staff veteran Bob Benson of Grand Junction, Colo. is retiring after 25 years on the job. Benson spent his first nine years on the PGA TOUR and the last 16 on the Web.com Tour. Bob, good luck! You will be missed! Another TOUR staffer on the move is John Slater . Slater has been Tournament Director on the Web.com Tour since 1998. He has assumed the position of Tournament Director on the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. All the best in your new position, John! DID YOU KNOW? – Morgan Hoffmann has played in eight Web.com Tour events since 2009, the first three as an amateur, and has not missed a cut. BIRTHDAY BOYS – Celebrating birthdays this week in Ohio are Aaron Watkins (July 24 th /30), Tim Wilkinson (26 th /34) and Steven Alker (28 th /41). NEXT WEEK – The Web.com Tour remains in the Midwest, traveling to Omaha, Neb. for the Cox Classic presented by Lexus of Omaha (Aug. 2-5) at Champions Run. # # # James Cramer Jeff Adams Joe Chemycz Royce Thompson 904-273-3293 904-273-3397 904-273-3305 904-543-7419 For the latest information, scores and updates on the Web.com Tour visit www.pgatourmedia.com Media and fans can also follow the Tour on Twitter ( http://twitter.com/webdotcomtour) and Facebook (www.Facebook.com/WebDotComTour ) .
