However, in spite of a long interest encompassing more than a hundred years, numerous gaps remain in our herpetological knowledge. For this reason, the author wished to contribute to a better understanding by performing studies outlined below. Aims The first task was to map the distribution of amphibians and reptiles inhabiting the archipelago as data were lacking for several of the smaller islands and also the fauna of the bigger islands was insufficiently known. Subsequently, the faunistic information derived from the scientific literature and field surveys conducted by the author as well as available geological and paleogeological data were compared and analysed from a zoogeographic point of view. The author wished to identify regions of the islands boasting the greatest herpetofaunal diversity by creating dot maps based on collecting localities. To answer the question which snake species and which individuals are going to be a victim of the traffic snake roadkill and literature survey were used. The author also identified where are the areas where the most snakes are hit by a vehicle on Cres. By gathering road-killed snakes and comparing their locality data with published occurrences the author seeked to identify species most vulnerable to vehicular traffic and road sections posing the greatest threat to snakes on Cres Island. -

ABSTRACT The Catsnake genus Telescopus Wagler, 1830 as currently understood includes a diverse assemblage of distantly related and morphologically similar snakes from south-west Asia, southern Europe and north, central and southern Africa. The various species groups are self-evidently morphologically and regionally distinct and so it is surprising that not all have been formally named in accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Ride et al. 1999) or earlier codes. This paper breaks up the genus along logical lines, the result being as follows: Telescopus Wagler, 1830 (type species: Coluber obtusus Reuss, 1834) includes the North African assemblage commonly referred to in the literature as “the dhara-obtusus group”. Tarbophis Fleischmann, 1831 (type species: Tarbophis fallax Fleischmann, 1831) is treated as a subgenus of Telescopus and includes the species with a distribution centred on the Middle-east and nearby parts of southern Europe and south-west Asia. Ruivenkamporumus subgen. nov. is erected to accommodate two divergent species within Telescopus with a distribution centred on Pakistan and Iran. Elfakhariorumserpens gen. nov. is erected to accommodate the very different four described species-level taxa from south-west Africa, and another from sub-Saharan Africa, with Matsonserpens subgen. -

MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 359 February 2021 1 MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 359 February 2021 How Pembroke’s once- popular entertainment venue Australia Hall turned into a sad ruin The 105-year-old building was buzzing with life in the first half of the 20th century Caroline Curmi If you’ve ever taken a stroll through Pembroke, you might have spotted a once majestic (but now a roofless and decaying) building within the parameters of the town. Built between 1915 and 1916 by the Australian branch of the British Red Cross Services, it was aptly christened as Australia Hall. Its original purpose had been to entertain wounded soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps recuperating in Malta during WWI. Large and spacious, it could fit 2,000 people in its massive hall (which would sometimes double as a theatre) and even had its own library. Later, it was passed on to a section of the British government in charge of overseeing recreational space for its troops, with the hall being subsequently fitted with a projector and transformed into a cinema in 1921. It would serve as an entertainment hall right till the last days of the British retreat from Malta. After the islands’ independence, the property passed on to the Maltese government and later to third parties, but it was never put back in operation. In 1996, Australia Hall was listed as a Grade 2 National Monument but by December 1998, it suffered a catastrophic fire that destroyed its roof. Although it was believed to have been caused by an arsonist, the case was never solved, and repairs were never effected. -

ABSTRACT The Natura 2000 is a network of protected areas designed and implemented by European Union. The main purpose of the Natura 2000 network is to protect the biodiversity. However, systematic assessment studies on the effectiveness of the Natura 2000 network are still scarce. The aim of this study is to assess the Natura 2000 Special Areas of Conservation network, and to answer does it protect the amphibians and reptiles of Crete. Species distribution modelling platform biomod2 was used to create distribution maps. We have explored using multiple modelling techniques for this purpose (GLM, GBM/BRT, CTA, RF, MARS and MAXENT), and multiple pseudo-absence approaches in order to find the optimal model with the highest performance, measured by kappa, TSS and AUC. -

In this study, we conducted an inventory of amphibians and reptiles between 2013 and 2016 in the Gediz Delta (İzmir, Turkey). The field results were combined with existing records. According to the data obtained, a total of 35 herptile species live in the region, comprising 7 amphibians (2 urodeles, 5 anurans) and 28 reptiles (6 chelonians, 10 lizards and 12 snakes). Five species (Lissotriton vulgaris, Triturus ivanbureschi, Heremites auratus, Platyceps collaris and Telecopus fallax) were recorded for the first time in the Gediz Delta during the study. A chorotype classification and potential threats of the species are also presented. WILSON & HEINZ GRILLITSCH KURZFASSUNG Die Herpetofauna der Dodekanes-Insel Simi und des Nachbareilandes Sesklia wurde auf Grundlage von Beobachtungen des Erstautors sowie anderer Herpetologen, Literaturzitaten und einer kleinen Belegsammlung des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien zusammenfassend dargestellt. Nach der Literatur waren bisher 13 Reptilien- arten und eine Amphibienart für die Insel nachgewiesen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit konnte die Europäische Katzennatter Telescopus fallax (FLEISCHMANN, 1831) der Artenliste der Insel hinzugefügt und das Vorkommen der seltenen Goldstreifenmabuye Trachylepis aurata (LINNAEUS, 1758) bestätigt werden. Eine vergleichende herpeto- logische Artenliste von Simi, Rhodos, Tilos, Khalki, Nissiros und des türkischen Festlandes wird vorgelegt. ABSTRACT Information about the herpetofauna of the Dodecanese Island of Simi and the neighboring Islet of Sesklia was summarized based on recent herpetological trips by the first author and other herpetologists, as well as litera- ture data and a small collection of specimens from the Natural History Museum in Vienna. From the literature, thirteen reptile species and a single amphibian species were known to occur on the island. In the present paper the European Cat Snake Telescopus fallax (FLEISCHMANN, 1831), may be added to the species list of Simi, and the pres- ence of the rare Levant Skink Trachylepis aurata (LINNAEUS, 1758) was confirmed. A comparative herpetofaunal species list of the islands of Simi, Rhodes, Tilos, Khalki, Nissiros and the Turkish mainland was provided. -
