    The Islamic Caliphate: A Controversial Consensus Ofir Winter The institution of the caliphate is nearly as old as Islam itself. Its roots lie in the days following the death of Muhammad in 632, when the Muslims convened and chose a “caliph” (literally “successor” or “deputy”). While the Shiites recognize ʿAli b. Abi Talib as the sole legitimate heir of the prophet, the Sunnis recognize the first four “rightly guided” caliphs (al-Khulafa al-Rashidun), as well as the principal caliphates that succeeded them – the Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, and Ottoman. The caliphate ruled the Sunni Muslim world for nearly 1,300 years, enjoying relative hegemony until its abolition in 1924 by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey. Although Sunni commentators have defined the essence of the caliphate differently in different periods, they tend to agree that the caliphate was founded for the purpose of managing Muslim affairs in accordance with the laws of God and organizing the lives of their people according to the principles of Islamic religious law.1 In practice, the caliphate has experienced highs and lows over the course of its history. In some periods, it exerted authority over political, administrative, financial, legal, and military affairs; in others, it was reduced to the symbolic and spiritual realm, such as leading mass prayers, much in the manner of the modern Catholic papacy.2 The Islamic State’s 2014 announcement on the renewal of the caliphate showed that the institution is not only a governmental-religious institution of the past, but also a living and breathing ideal that excites the imagination of present day Muslims.

    Insight Islamicus Vol. 19, 2019 Contribution of Anwar Shah Kashmiri to the Hadith Literature in India Dr. Meraj Ahmad Meraj ABSTRACT Anawr Shah Kashmiri, a versatile genius, occupies a prominent position among the commentators of hadith literature that India has ever produced. The hadith Literature means the literature which consists of narration of the sayings of the Prophet and the things approved by him. Allamah Kashmiri is said to have ushered in a new era in the commentary of hadith literature in India. He was a great scholar, poet, philosopher, orator and above all, a great commentator of hadith Literature. He will be remembered with his matchless contribution in imparting Islamic education. His nature and mental set up had been shaped to be a great Islamic jurist and a momentous commentator of hadith literature. Since his child hood, he embarked upon the colossal task of interpretation of the Holy Quran and hadith. His vision was mainly confined to the Quranic problems as dealt with the different religious sects in a manner which tended to threaten the very existence of Islam. His sophisticated arguments, having been based upon authentic prophetic traditions and Quranic verses proved very active and decisive. His contribution particularly in the field of hadith literature cannot be ignored or overestimated. The aim of this paper is to discuss the development of Hadith Literature and its significance of Muslim culture. This paper also aims to highlight the contribution made by Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri to the Hadith literature who was admittedly the leader of his time in Islamic sciences and prophetic traditions.

    ICT Jihadi Monitoring Group INSIGHTS The Grozny Conference in Chechnya – Is the Salafi Movement a Rotten Fruit of Sunni Islam? Dr. Michael Barak International Institute for Counter Terrorism (ICT) Additional resources are available on the ICT Website: www.ict.org.il The Salafi movement in Sunni Islam has experienced a strong jolt recently, not only in terms of a challenge to its worldview but even to its very existence. On August 25-27, an international conference held in Grozny, Chechnya, was attended by over 200 leading Muslim clerics from various Islamic schools of thought, sponsored by the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov (see photo), and with the blessing of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Participants addressed the question, “Who are the people of the Sunna?” and determined that authentic Sunni Islam is not a militant religion that preaches violence, but rather a religion characterized by inclusion and tolerance towards the “other”. This stands in contrast to the strict interpretation by Salafi-jihadist terrorist organizations, such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, that justify the use of violence against Muslims who they do not consider to be pure Sunnis. On the surface, it is apparent that the conference was designed to undermine the ideological platform that feeds power to Salafi-jihadist terrorist organizations. However, in practice, it embodies a poignant political statement against the Salafi movement overall, even on non-violent issues, and against Saudi Arabia in particular for bearing responsibility for the radicalized thinking among young Muslims and the spread of terrorism. This was indicated by the fact that not one Salafi Ramzan Kadyrov representative from around the world was invited to the conference.

    PC.DEL/952/07 Distributed at the request of Austria 9 October 2007 ENGLISH only OSCE Chairmanship Conference on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims Cordoba, 9 – 10 October 2007 General Contribution Conference of European Imams and Ministers Vienna 2006 organized by the Islamic Religious Community in Austria in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the City of Vienna and the European Islam Conference Final Declaration of the Conference Islam in Europe is theologically compatible with the principles of democracy, the rule of law, pluralism and human rights. That was the view expressed by the “Conference of Leaders of Islamic Centres and Imams in Europe” in 2003 in Graz, then European Capital of Culture. Simultaneously every form of fanatism, extremism and fatalism was clearly condemned. This was not only an important signal to Muslims, but should also, through the emphasis on participation, promote the integration and identification processes of Muslims in Europe, who now constitute a community of approximately 50 million people of diverse origin. As evidence of Muslim self-awareness, an important explanatory signal should also be sent to non-Muslims in order to counteract their fear and reservations and to strengthen cooperation in peace, mutual understanding and respect. In 2006, the conference participants clearly had to recognize that still greater efforts from all sides are required in order to achieve the acceptance of the Muslims by the majority society. In various European countries social and economic tensions are simultaneously related to an often aggressive and emotionally charged “foreigner debate”. Muslims are used as a group in order to create a picture of “foreigners”, which in times of insecurity strengthens discrimination.

The headscarf has been both vehemently contested by national and/or regional gov ernments, polit­ ical par ties and pub lic intellectuals, and pas sion ately defended by veil wearing women and their sup porters. Systematically applying a comparative per spect ive, this book addresses the question of why the headscarf tantalizes and causes such con tro versy over issues about religious plur al ism, secularism, neutrality of the state, gender oppression, citizen ship, migration and multiculturalism. Seeking also to estab lish why the issue has become part of the regulatory practices of some Euro pean countries but not of others, this work brings together an import ant collection of in ter pretative research re gard ing the current debates on the veil in Europe, offering an interdisciplinary scope using a common research methodology, the con trib utors focus on the different religious, polit ical and cultural meanings of the veiling issue across eight coun tries and develop a comparative explanation of veiling regimes. This work will be of great inter est to students and scholars of religion and pol itics, gender studies and multiculturalism. The Women's and Gender Equality Strategy 2020 defines the goals for the coming years and describes visions reaching beyond this time horizon. With this, it provides an operational framework for the future women's and gender equality policy pursued by the State of Styria. Within its sphere of action and in collaboration with the Styrian regions and the Austrian Federal Government, the State Government intends to gradually come closer to realizing these visions. In coordination with the Styrian State Government, the seven regional delegates commit to the goals of equality among the genders and, within the scope of their capabilities and fields of action, will contribute to the implementation of the Women's and Gender Equality Strategy 2020.
