The central question with which this dissertation is concerned is how clothing and the clothing industry is constituted by and constitutive of the phenomenal changes that have taken place in contemporary China, especially in the post-1978 reform period. Specifically, this dissertation addresses two major questions: 1) Are the changes in Chinese clothing and the clothing industry merely a part of China’s economic development or modernization? And 2) does China’s integration with the global economy translate into a Westernization of China? The development of China’s textile and apparel industries is a process of liberalization in which the socialist state cultivates and encourages market competition in China’s economy. The development of China’s textile and clothing industries is thus a part of the state’s agenda to modernize China’s economy. The economic modernization in China, however, is not intended to be an imitation of the West, but a means to an end. Similarly, the Chinese notion of modernity, which is reflected in the official narratives of the evolution of clothing styles, is not modeled after the West; instead, it is a story the Chinese tell themselves about themselves in relation to their own past. Therefore, modernization and modernity as reflected by the changes in Chinese clothing and clothing industry are vested with Chinese meanings. Intertwined with the issues of modernization and modernity, this dissertation also examines the ways in which Western styles of clothing, design techniques, business models, iv fashion shows and fashion weeks become localized in China. Thus, this dissertation challenges the Westernization thesis in the study of globalization. In addition, the dissertation also explores the integration of China’s clothing industry with the global clothing industry through the examination of the exportation of Chinese made garments to the United States that is predicated on the global political economy.     Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

Along with the rapid urban transformation and the neglect of historic cores, Chinese cities are witnessing the rapid disappearance of industrial heritage. This negative reality of conservation practice raises a fundamental question about the reasons for such cultural myopia. To reveal the main factors that dominate the results of brownfield regeneration projects in urban China, this thesis reviewed theories on the production of space and the literature on the Chinese context. A single case study approach was adopted, collecting data from semi-structured interviews, document reviews and popular media. Through an investigation in the major industrial inland city of Chongqing, the thesis examined how the idea of industrial heritage reuse has travelled as a global concept with its Chinese precedents to Chongqing, and why the idea has been diluted in the regional context.

A cheongsam is a special garment favored by people all over the world. Its elegance is known by the Chinese people, and appreciated by the world. The cheongsam, as the Chinese name suggests, refers to the gown that women of Eight Banners wore before Manchu rulers went across Shanhaiguan, the important pass in north part of China. It was actually the daily dress mainly for women of Manchu and Mongolia. Its basic style is loose with standing collar, bottoms on the right chest, long sleeves, and spacious downswing without side vents by linear tailoring. Usually there is decorative embroidery or other colors of lace in the front collar or at the downswing or the mouth of the sleeves. A Chinese Cheongsam, with the oriental artistic aesthetics as the cultural heritage, has displayed various beauties, youthful beauty of young ladies and the maturity of women grow-ups.

Under the structural interconnectedness between art and capitalism in the global fashion industry, together with the drive of the socialist ideology of the public owner- ship of the means of production in China, SHFW is now showing discrete cultural characteristics, absorbing as much knowledge as it can from the legitimate fashion week system and incorporating this in the domestic industry context. This paper also argues that SHFW has built up an interactive and dynamic infrastructure or ecosystem within the domestic fashion culture, enhancing its socialist characteristics with the intertwining of a core professional fashion week and a mass carnival event. Its deep engagement with both the general public and professional insiders is a unique cultural charac- teristic that distinguishes it from Paris Fashion Week and London Fashion Week. The city of Turin represents a pit stop for fashion beginners, addressing, in that way, to emerging fashion designers who work in a very exciting environment finding inspiration from the new trends and innovation released by the city and from the huge tradition the territory has from the very past, with his famous Italian textiles’ brands and manufactures companies. After the success of the 2016 and 2017 editions, the 3° edition of the TFW is willing to confirm the position of the city as Fashion and textile hub where tradition and innovation can meet in a perfect synergy. This ambitious event restored to the city of Turin its fashion image, without competing with other Fashion Week, but creating a very personal identity. It’s addressed to the huge crowd of designers, textiles’ labs and manufactures companies who live here, that contribute to create the identity of the city: an innovative smart and dynamic city oriented towards innovation, design and fashion with a deep attention to technology development. The event is also characterized by its’ international dimension: it calls a global audience of companies, brands, experts and fashion designers from all over the world. Torino Fashion week become a regular appointment with a specific soul focused on one hand on the innovative and the emerging dimension of the fashion industry and, on the other hand, on the specific and so cherished issue of the Modest Islamic Fashion.
