From block book to Leonard Baskin; 500 years of book illustration. Williamstown, Mass., 1966. FROM BLOCK BOOK TO LEONARD BASKIN 500 Years of Book Illustration Chapin Library: Williams College May 1–31, 1966 FOREWORD Book illustration has taken many directions both in content and technique. This exhibition presents within the broad limits of the Chapin collection, many of the highlights in the five hundred year history of the illustrated book. The selection is the result of two factors: First, an Independent Study project in the history and theory of typography and second, my major studies in art history. Where possible, representative styles from various periods are displayed with works whose greatness depends upon the skill of the illustrators or printers. The 20th century has posed certain problems of selection. I have chosen examples which explore or introduce new forms of graphic design, but at the same time do not reject the contributions of the past. I wish to express my thanks to Mr. H. Richard Archer, Curator of the Chapin Library, and his assistant, Miss Carolyn Nichols, who labored long and arduously over the descriptions prepared for the items shown in the exhibition.
