NATIONALN A T I O N A L FOUNDATION FOR AMERICAN POLICY NFAP POLICY BRIEF » J U N E 2 0 1 4 IMMIGRANT CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE NBA AND MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2014 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs are an example of how successful American enterprises today combine native-born and foreign-born talent to compete at the highest level. With 7 foreign-born players, the Spurs led the NBA with the most foreign-born players on their roster. Tony Parker (France), Boris Diaw (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina) played alongside Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Kawhi Leonard (U.S.) to bring the team its 5th NBA championship since 1999. The San Antonio Spurs are part of a larger trend of globalization in the NBA. In the 2013-14 season, the National Basketball Association (NBA) set a record with 90 international players, representing 20 percent of the players on the opening-night NBA rosters, compared to 21 international players (and 5 percent of rosters) in 1992. Professional baseball started blending foreign-born players with native-born talent earlier than the NBA. On the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) opening-day roster there were 213 foreign-born players, representing 25 percent of the total, an increase of 2 percentage points from an NFAP analysis of MLB rosters performed in 2006. Leading foreign-born baseball players include 2013 American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, 2013 World Series MVP David Ortiz and Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich (l) with Tony Parker (c) and Manu Ginobili (r).

  • Myck Kabongo Slowly Taking Over for Texas Page 1 of 2
ESPN.com - Myck Kabongo slowly taking over for Texas Page 1 of 2 [Print without ESPN.com: College Basketball Nation images] Wednesday, December 21, 2011 Myck Kabongo slowly taking over for Texas By Jason King Texas coach Rick Barnes knew he'd landed one of the fastest recruits in the country when he signed Canadian point guard Myck Kabongo in the fall of 2010. Occasionally, though, Kabongo seems almost too fast. Multiple times this season, the 6-foot-1 freshman has sprinted up the court with the basketball and realized that none of his teammates were there with him. Instead of pulling back and waiting for them to catch up, Kabongo often tried to make things happen all by himself, which usually resulted in an ill-advised shot or a turnover. "I needed to learn how to slow down and run my team," said Kabongo, chuckling during a phone interview with ESPN.com Tuesday night. "They need me to play great for us to be in games. I understand that now." Apparently so. Texas has won seven straight games -- all by double digits -- since a pair of early-season losses to Oregon State and North Carolina State. Kabongo is one of the main reasons. The Toronto native is averaging 12.8 points and 6.7 assists in his last six contests, which includes a season-high 18-point effort in Saturday's win over Temple. Tonight Kabongo will face the toughest test of his career thus far when the Longhorns face No. 6 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Texas has defeated the Tar Heels the last two seasons, but with a rotation that includes five freshmen and just three experienced players, Kabongo knows he'll have to be at his best if Texas has any hopes of a victory.

The report, “Immigrant Contributions in the NBA and Major League Baseball,” is available at www.nfap.com . The San Antonio Spurs led the league with 7 foreign-born players, according to the NBA. Moreover, data on Wins Produced, compiled by BoxScore Geek, indicate the foreign-born players on the Spurs were responsible for 32 of the team’s league-leading 62 wins in 2013-14. The leading win producer among foreign-born players was Marco Belinelli, from Italy, with 6.7 wins produced, followed by Manu Ginobili, born in Argentina, with 6 wins produced, with important contributions also from Patty Mills (Australia, 5 wins), Tiago Splitter (Brazil, 4 wins), Boris Diaw (France, 3.8 wins), Tony Parker (France, 3.6 wins), and Cory Joseph (Canada, 2.8 wins) None of this is to argue that only the foreign-born players contributed to the San Antonio Spurs compiling the NBA’s best record and the league championship. The team’s two most important players were native-born Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan, who was born in the U.S.

ESPN.com - Mature Myck Kabongo will lead young Texas Page 1 of 2 [Print without ESPN.com: College Basketball Nation images] Friday, October 21, 2011 Mature Myck Kabongo will lead young Texas By Jason King KANSAS CITY -- A few days ago, Texas coach Rick Barnes turned to one of his assistants in practice and made a bold prediction about the 2011-12 season. Well, kind of. "We're going to be good at something -- at least one thing," Barnes told him. "I'm just not sure what it is yet." There are indeed plenty of questions surrounding a Longhorns team that had three players -- Tristan Thompson, Jordan Hamilton and Cory Joseph -- selected in the first round of last summer's NBA draft. Six of the nine recruited scholarship players on Texas' roster are freshmen, and there appears to be a serious lack of depth in the paint. Still, if Barnes is searching for a team strength, it may be a safe bet to look in the backcourt, where highly touted freshman point guard Myck Kabongo will team with junior J'Covan Brown, who is easily the team's top returning player. Barnes said Kabongo has all the tools to become the next great point guard for a program that has produced standouts such as T.J. Ford and D.J. Augustin. "He's somewhere in between those two," Barnes said of Kabongo. "He's extremely fast like T.J., but T.J. would pace his game. Myck is a more full throttle. Forget the cruise control. He'd be great this weekend at Talledega.
