8 THE MESSENGER | SPRING 2013 ACADEMICS – ELEMENTARY LEVEL Musical Play Enhances Learning earning science with a series of guest lecturers, hands-on labs, and songs proved to be the most engaging way for Mrs. Shockley’s traditional fourth grade class to experience the human body and its systems first Lhand. Doctors and nurses specializing in the study of kidneys, heart, and lungs came to teach the fourth graders through models, video, question and answer sessions, and most dramatically through dissections. In turn, the students researched various body organs and systems and created life-size models of eight of those systems. Finally, the class performed their “Human Body Show.” The musical took the audience through the body, hearing from each organ as they described their own importance to the amazing machine we call our body. ■

Parents eagerly learn about systems and organs at the annual musical “The Human Body Show.” Lindsey Byrom explains how veins and arteries are like the freeways in our body.

Montessori Family Night: Montessori Math Curriculum uthor and teacher trainer Michael Duffy states in his book Montessori Math and the Developing Brain, “The richness of the learning experience for your child depends on theA number of senses and dimensions involved in the process. Montessori math materials are real, three-dimensional, multi-sensory objects instead of flat pictures in a book or, worse, just words and numbers to explain mathematical concepts.” Montessori math materials are wonderful tools that the student uses not only to learn mathematics, but to explore and understand concepts and think and reason logically. The more active and in control the student is, the greater the thirst for discovering new knowledge and perfecting of mastery of skills. When a second grader chooses math work from the shelf, there is a degree of interest within this act. The material is paired with skill level and learning occurs as a result of this activity. The three age groups in the classroom encourages collaboration, cross age teaching and learning, which are a common staple Second grader Kiernan Cruger working a division problem of the environment. This supports not only academic progress, but social and emotional with the Test Tubes. development as well. ■ How is the spiral math curriculum supported with the materials ? A few examples:

■ The Golden Beads at the primary level are used for numeration, place value and an introduction to the four operations with whole numbers. They are used at the lower elementary level to more fully explore the four operations. Then the spiral continues with the same operations with other materials like the stamp game, bead frames, Checkerboard, and test tube division, with the color coding established with the stamp game used throughout the other materials.

■ The Checkerboard in lower elementary is used for compound multiplication of whole numbers. It is used again in upper elementary for cross multiplication (a process that eliminates the use of partial products). There is a decimal version of the Checkerboard for decimal multiplication. Students presenting the math curriculum spiral. Parents had the opportunity to view the Montessori Math Curriculum from 3 years to 5th grade. ■ The Binomial and Trinomial Cubes are used in primary as sensorial puzzles. They are used again in upper elementary in the work students do with cubing and cube roots. View more photos from Montessori Family Night at www.iwacc.org/publications
