It comprises classrooms, a library and an art room. When the new building is completed and the senior pupils have moved into their new classrooms, part of the present premises will be pulled down to make way for a new science block. The combined cost of the two schemes will be more than £70,000 and will be met entirely by the school and the parents. All houses are terraced History Sherwood Street is built on part of the old Finchley Common. The enclosure map of 1811 shows that a field called the Mead had been taken out and used for growing grass and hay. It was owned in 1841 by William Bass, who was a blacksmith and had a forge behind the Three Horseshoes pub. He would have used the field for his horse. The 1871 Ordnance Survey map shows Rasper Road, the Green (later Green Road) and what was to become Sherwood Street all existing but with only a few houses. Sherwood Street was developed between 1880 and 1890. The street was designed as an architectural whole and is symmetrical. The houses were originally let to rent at 106 6d a week – a higher than average price for the time for what was considered to be good class houses, having mains water and gas pipes built into the brickwork. The first occupant (in 1891) of number 8 of whom there is a record is Mrs Hill, followed by Arthur Crowsley in 1896. The first purpose-built infant school in the district was built at the junction of Sherwood Street and Friern Barnet Lane. The money was put up by John Miles. The first teacher in November 1859 was Marion Head aged 20 who had her 13- year old sister to help her. Their combined salary was £30 per year, with a house and coal provided free. In 1864 they were allowed free gas partly because the school teacher’s house was attached to the school and did not have a separate supply. In 1883 it was decided to rent the school to St John’s Church, who continued to use it until a new school was built in Britannia Road. It was used as a Parish Room until a new hall and social centre was built further along Friern Barnet Lane. The old school was demolished in the 1930s to be replaced by Thorne Printing Works (no 272 Friern Barnet Lane). Numbers 1-19 Rasper Road are Portland Terrace with a plaque saying they were built in 1870 (John Heathfield FB&DLHS) Infrastructure 11 Sep 1934. The street is being developed (Friern Barnet UDC Minutes) Individual properties Nos 1 – 15. Two-storey terrace in yellow stock brick with red brick banding and arches to windows at ground floor. Large dormer windows set within eaves. Timber casement windows with sliding sash windows to dormers. Steep pitched tiled roof with dominant central chimney stacks.     Friern Barnet Newsletter Published by Friern Barnet & District Local History Society Issue Number 33 April 2008 IT’S ALL PART OF BOOTS’ SERVICE, SIR! by Ron Kingdon I took over the management of the photographic department in Boots the Chemist in High Street Barnet in 1956 (we had real photographic departments in those days) and, as I lived in North Mymms, I used to cycle to work every day. As well as an interest in photography, I was starting to become interested in hi-fi equipment and government surplus material and Tottenham Court Road was a Mecca for us enthusiasts, and I often made my way up there. In those days we only had one half day a week off work (early closing day in Barnet was Thursday) although, of course, things improved later. Imagine the scene: at 1pm the shop closed and I cycled off to London and, passing through Whetstone, I noticed a café being taken down. I saw an enamel sign on the structure and stopped to ask a workman if I could have it. He said: “If you can get it off, it’s yours.” The screws holding it were pretty rusty, with poor slots. With my Boys’ Brigade training I always carried a few small tools in my saddle bag so after a struggle I managed to remove it. The question now was, how could I cart this 18 inch diameter heavy steel plate all the way to London and back? I managed to tie it to my bike (fortunately I had string and a strong carrier) and cycled along to the Boots shop in North Finchley.

    Friern Barnet Newsletter Published by Friern Barnet & District Local History Society Issue Number 35 December 2008 THE RUSSELL EAGLES by Brian Lee I learnt to ride a bike at the Manor Drive Sunday School, or rather, that was where I was given the opportunity to learn. There were two Sunday School sessions and my pals and I went early to the second session so that we could ride the bikes left outside by the younger children attending the first session. We had no bikes of our own, so we made the most of this ‘loan’ system. When I first learnt to ride, a pal used to hold the back to steady me and I only knew when I was on my own when I looked round and nobody was there. I was about 9 or 10 years old, so it would have been around 1948. I came from a family of six boys and lived on the Council estate behind the shops in Oakleigh Road so there was no way I would ever be given a bike of my own and I was much older before I could save up the money to buy one. One of my elder brothers had a bike and he used to undo the nuts on the wheels to stop me riding it. It didn’t stop me of course and one day the wheel came off as I was riding down the street. Being a resourceful lad I collected bits and pieces from waste ground or parts that people had thrown away and, without having to buy anything I was able to make my own bike by the time I was twelve.

At various times the Civic Authorities throughout the United Kingdom have granted Honours to units of the Armed Forces, both Regular and Reservist. 2. There do not appear to be a set of definitive rules governing what these Honours are, but they generally fall into two categories: 1. Freedom of the County/City/Borough 2. Adopted by the County/City/Borough 3. The 'Freedom' – to march through the streets of the Borough with bayonets fixed, drums beating and Colours flying – is really an empty grant as, outside the City of London where the right has been zealously guarded for centuries, it does not seem that any City or Borough would be entitled to prevent units of Her Majesty’s Forces from marching in the town. However, the practice has now been generally accepted and provides a dignified and satisfactory means of enabling a City or Borough to honour a distinguished unit of Her Majesty’s Forces. 4. Associated with the 'Freedom of the Borough' is the 'Freedom of Entry' which has been granted by a number of Cities and Boroughs to service units (Ships of the Royal Navy, Army units, Royal Air Force squadrons, stations etc.) which have rendered conspicuous service and are closely associated with the City or Borough. The ceremony of granting these Freedoms may differ slightly from that of granting Freedom to an individual, as they could not easily be carried out at a Council meeting as a fully representative body of troops from the unit may not be able to be present.

Shortly after the last Newsletter had been printed, I was interviewing Peter and Margaret Cragg who both worked in the Education Department at Friern Barnet Town Hall. I happened to mention the sign that Friern Barnet UDC had erected in Friern Barnet Lane whereupon Peter told me that he had been personally responsible for renovating and repainting the sign in 2002 and fortunately had taken a photograph of it, which he kindly lent me. Peter reported that shortly after it had been erected, a car had hit the sign and demolished it whereupon it was placed in the car park in front of North Middlesex Golf Club where it lay for some time before disappearing. We have tried to trace its whereabouts but it seems to have vanished forever. 1 COMPUTER PROBLEMS by David Berguer Our renowned local historian and honoured member, John Heathfield, had an unfortunate experience back in March when his computer crashed and he was in danger of losing 25 years-worth of work on local history. Fortunately he took his stricken machine to a computer shop in Hendon and they were able to retrieve some, but not all, of his files. I had been meaning to buy a backup system for my own computer for some time and had never got round to it but, with John’s experience as a warning, I immediately went to the same shop and purchased an external hard drive (a Western Digital Passport Potable Hard Drive with 250gb of memory) for £109.
