The mission of GIFF is to provide an effective platform for filmmakers to Wshowcase their work, while harnessing the power of film to serve the greater good by supporting important causes. With this in mind, we launched the #MakeAnImpact campaign to draw attention to the many benefits the Festival offers. In just three years, we have spotlighted a wide range of charities, raising much needed awareness, as well as funds totalling over $350,000 in donations. Additionally, we have awarded $100,000 in cash prizes to filmmakers to date, giving much needed support to new voices in the arts. We were honored to premiere Bending the Arc as our 2017 Opening Night Film, which was followed by a panel discussion on the state of global health care. Our 2017 Festival celebrated Renee Zellweger and Christy Turlington Burns as our Changemaker Honorees for their tremendous philanthropic and artistic accomplishments. GIFF has matured into a year-round organization with programming that entertains, educates and inspires audience members through film. GIFF offered a number of free programs, which included screening events and panel discussions. In early 2017, we had the opportunity to work with NBC’s Emmy-winning show GIVE to highlight the incredible work that two of our local charity partners, Family Centers and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, are doing for so many in our region. The episode became a free community event to honor these partners with a special advance screening for our audience. We are thankful for the generosity of our community of supporters that have given their time and resources to make GIFF and its programs possible. We look forward to continuing this amazing journey with you for years to come. • Christy Turlington Burns Hopeful for Change in U.S. Maternal Health
CANADIAN PRESS, MAY 14, 2011 Christy Turlington Burns hopeful for change in U.S. maternal health TORONTO — Former supermodel Christy Turlington Burns says statistics on maternal mortality in the U.S. are "quite shocking," but she's hopeful new legislation will improve the situation. Turlington Burns has become an advocate for better global maternal health care in recent years, after a complication with the delivery of her first child prompted her to explore the cause and make the documentary "No Woman, No Cry". The film follows at-risk pregnant women in several parts of the world, including the U.S., where — according to the documentary — two women die each day from a pregnancy-related complication, and one in five women of reproductive age has no health insurance. Turlington Burns, who's also spearheading the Every Mother Counts campaign, says she's hopeful the Maternal Health Accountability Act introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives last month by Rep. John Conyers of Michigan will improve the situation. "That has the potential to, I think, make a big difference," she said Friday in an interview before the Canadian public premiere of the doc, which marks her directorial debut, at Bell Lightbox. "In the United States, it's such an enormous country, as is Canada, and it's very hard to collect data and consolidate data so that people really understand how deaths are happening and why they're happening and really understand what's happening, state-by-state review boards and whatnot. So it has the promise to do that," she said.

WeLcOmE HoMe Leaving a Disney Store stock room with a Buzz Lightyear doll in 1995 was like jumping into a shark tank with a wounded seal.* The underestimated success of a computer-animated film from an upstart studio had turned plastic space rangers into the hottest commodities since kids were born in a cabbage patch, and Disney Store Cast Members found themselves on the front line of a conflict between scarce supply and overwhelming demand. One moment, you think you’re about to make a kid’s Christmas dream come true. The next, gift givers become credit card-wielding wildebeest…and you’re the cliffhanging Mufasa. I was one of those battle-scarred, cardigan-clad Cast Members that holiday season, doing my time at a suburban-Atlanta mall where I developed a nervous tick that still flares up when I smell a food court, see an astronaut or hear the voice of Tim Allen. While the supply of Buzz Lightyear toys has changed considerably over these past 20-plus years, the demand for all things Toy Story remains as strong as a procrastinator’s grip on Christmas Eve. Today, with Toy Story now a trilogy and a fourth film in production, Andy’s toys continue to find new homes at Disney Parks around the world, including new Toy Story-themed lands at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (pages 3-4) and Shanghai Disneyland (page 22).
