Advanced Aircrew Academy presents a Runway Excursion Top 10, designed to focus attention on eliminating the risks. ABOUT THE PRESENTER I grew up in Lubbock, Texas and graduated from Texas Tech University before I entered the Air Force in 1987 as a Student Pilot. After pilot training, I was stationed at Barksdale, AFB in Shreveport, Louisiana flying the Boeing KC-135 Tanker for 6 years. I left Barksdale and reported to Laughlin, AFB in Del Rio, Texas to be a T-1A Instructor Pilot. I spent 4 years at Laughlin and then I separated from the Air Force and took a job with Raytheon Travel Air, flying the Beechjet 400A. Since there was a liberal domicile policy with Travel Air, I moved to my wife’s hometown of Ruston, Louisiana and I: have lived there since leaving the Air Force. Raytheon Travel Air merged with Flight Options a few years after I was hired, and I was with Flight Options until 2016. I had several jobs while at Flight Options, including Beechjet Captain, Check Airman and Aircrew Program Designee. There was yet another merger with Flexjet, and I transferred to Flexjet to fly the Embraer 500, and then the Gulfstream 450. I have a Master’s Degree from Delta State University in Commercial Aviation. I have also been a Pilot Proficiency Examiner in the Beechjet and I hold CFII and MEI certificates. Outside of Flexjet, I am involved with an online pilot training company called Advanced Aircrew Academy. I work as a courseware developer and subject matter expert. Originally, we were oriented to Part 135 operations and the annual training requirements for that group of pilots. We now have courses for corporate flight departments that cover different aspects of aviation including aircraft maintenance, OSHA, line operations and Safety Management Systems. Several years ago, I joined the FAA Safety Team (FAAST) as a volunteer representative, in order to find a way to give back to aviation in the Ruston area. I have interacted with the Professional Aviation students at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, during their quarterly safety meetings, and that led me into working part time as a simulator instructor for students who are going for their Instrument rating in flight school. JUNIPER Back To AGENDA 6 | NTBAA | 6TH ANNUAL SAFETY SHOW-DOWN | www.ntbaaonline.com BREAKOUT SESSION 1 SESSION B AUGUST 23, 2018 1:40 PM ASAP FOR CHARTER OPERATORS AND CORPORATE FLIGHT DEPARTMENTS Presenter: Russ Lawton - Air Charter Safety Foundation Director of Safety and ASAP Program Manager Overview: The ACSF, in cooperation with the FAA, has established an Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP). ASAP is a voluntary, self-reporting program that identifies and reduces possible flight safety concerns, and mitigates risk. ASAP uses employee input to identify significant safety concerns and issues; operational deficiencies; non-compliance with regulations; deviations from company policies and procedures; and unusual events. Each report is investigated and corrective actions determined based on a non-disciplinary approach to flight safety. ABOUT THE PRESENTER Russell Lawton is Director of Safety Management for the Air Charter Safety Foundation, and is responsible for developing and implementing programs to improve the safety and security of air charter and fractional aircraft ownership companies, their employees, customers, equipment and facilities. This is being accomplished through the Safety 1st Management System (SMS) and assisting FAR 135 operators and FBOs in developing customized safety manuals via Webcast and workshop training; internal / external audit program standards. Lawton is also responsible for the Air Charter Safety Foundation’s Industry Audit Standard for charter operators and fractional aircraft ownership companies, as well as the Aviation Safety Information System (AVSiS) Safety Reporting Program. Lawton has held key safety roles during 35 years in aviation and system safety. Prior to joining the Air Charter Safety Foundation, he served as Director of Operations at Wyvern Consulting and was Wyvern’s lead safety auditor. He also is an experienced charter operations advocate and has assisted the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration on various safety initiatives. He has served as an active member of the NBAA Safety Committee for more than 10 years. He has also served as editorial consultant to the Flight Safety Foundation and Editor-in-Chief of IFR Refresher Magazine.
