Pembrey 28/29 Jun 1997 Results for the WRDA and Historic Touring Car Charnpionship but faces the very successfulJaguar MkII of Alec Hammond. Les has been racing for more than 30 years, but is still as competitive as ever even though he no longer races regularly. Rivalling his Lotus Cortina are similar cars in the hands of Thomas Lailey de Ville, Ron Cosgrove and Peter Taylor. Bristol's Reg Salway- in his first seasonof racir-rg- tops the classes '60 for Pre Classic Saloons in his Morris Minor. Local racers have two rounds of the P+P Supplies Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Charnpionship with Carmarthen's Terry Brown (Darrian T9) hoping to extend his winning form. Also racing examples of the Lampeter-built sports car are Peter Dark and Gareth Davies while the unusual Forzari GTi of Paul Welch is scheduled to appear. Former rally driver Martin Davies Martin Dauies head.sthe Cosworth-powered contenders in his M&S Engineering Cosworth. With two races during Sunday, this is an irnportant rveekend fbr the title contenders. More diverse and highly-modified cars conte.st the seventh round of the ACE Vehicle Deliveries Sports and Saloon Car Charnpionship with an entry headed by the Nissan 100-basedspecial of Richard Harris and Dorsetman Steve Hall in his Ford Fiesta, who makes his debut at Pembrev. Ardy Clarkin brings his Cavalier out for a warm-up prior to the Forrnula Saloon race but it is class E racer Garry Wilson rvho heads the championship after a run of five straight classwins in his rare Lenhanr Le Mans Coupe. This is Garry's 17th seasonof racins in this car and he is bidding to clir-rchthe championship title that he just rnissedout on last year. The BARC/RSCC Moclified Production Saloon Car Championship pa1'sits onll' visit of the year to Wales with Ray West Ace ltehide Deliauts S'bortsSaloons - Stne Hal,Lleads RithnrrJ Hatfis (Steue (Opel Manta) bidding to maintain his Jones) unbeaten record. The Harnpshireman shotrld again be the classof the field but needs to keep winning if'he is to secrlre the crown as Scott Austin (Escort RS2000) and Mark Chandler (Rover Mini) are chasing hard from their respectiveclasses. Running concurrently with the Moclified Pr-ocluction Saloons are the BARC Renault Clio Cup contenders, where Darren Clarke leads David Willoughby by three classwins to tlvo in the opening five races. Finally, an hour-long two-driver round of the Andyspares/Fire.stone National 2CV Championship brings out a capacity fielcl as the teams lirnber up for the 24 hotrr race at Mondello Park in Ireland next month! (JohnGaisford) PEMBREY an important place in Britishmotorsport WRDA Sports/SaloonChampionship competitors at Pembrq (Ian Hayward) HEN the Llanciow circuit near Cowbriclge closecl its cloors to circuit racing, Wales was left without a race track until the efforts to open up the Pembrey circuit reachecl fruition at the end of the 1980s. Toclay, Pembrey is an important part of British nrotorsport and is one of the most wiclely-used venues in the country. This weel<encl heralcls a two-clay meeting organisecl by the British Automobile ltacing Club, owners of the circuit lease. The BARC has clone much to clevelop Pembrey as a venue ancl their commitment and investment has been rewarclecl by a venue that is in use virtually every weekencl of the season, ancl frequently cluring the week. But it is not just car racing that keeps the circuit busy. Pembrey is host to just about every form of motorsport with motorbikes, scooters, karts ancl trucks all racing here. Aclcl in car sprints, rallycross ancl special stage rallying ancl you have a venue that benefits all branches of the sport. Away from race weekends, Pembrey is regularly host to teams testing and cleveloping their cars. The manufactur€rs in the British Touring Car Championship are frequent visitors, recognising the challenging track as an icleal testing venue with its mix of fast and slow corners. Pembrey is a fine venue that offers much to its users, whatever type of wheelecl-sport they follow. With an on-going programme of investment and improvement - which inclucleclcomplete re-surfacing of the track in recent months - the Welsh Motor Sport Centre is a vital part of British motorsport.
