According to the Notice of Completion, construction was completed on January 11, 1962. This is an excellent original example of a mid-century custom designed Contemporary Modern home. It features a low pitched gabled roof, asymmetrical façade, broad expanses of uninterrupted wall surfaces, exposed roof beams, recessed entry door, and other character defining features of the Contemporary Modern style including a large low pitched front facing gabled roof with wide overhanging eaves, large exposed roof beams, broad expanses of uninterrupted vertical wooden wall board surfacing, integrated garage and a somewhat obscured and downplayed entryway, all in keeping with the Contemporary Modern architectural style. A garage enclosure/addition was completed by the original Master Architect Homer Delawie in 1965. The home features the distinctive asymmetrical one sided extending gabled roof design popularized by San Francisco builder Joseph Eichler and other Mid Century builders and architects, and with one gable extending out further than the other which is sometimes referred to as the "wounded dove" roof design. *P3b. The home's front façade is dominated by the broad overhanging low pitched gable roof with a side screening fence with matching vertical wood material. The front façade of the home faces east onto Paseo Del Ocaso and the secondary elevation faces south onto Vallecitos. The house was custom designed in 1961 by established Master Architect Homer Delawie, and construction was completed in January 1962 by the firm of McKellar & Wyer, Inc. This is an outstanding example of a mid-century architect designed Modern or Contemporary style home. The house has a low pitched front gabled roof and an L-shaped compound irregular form. The horizontal design and massing contain wide eaves with large open eave overhangs throughout. The style of the house is the Modernist Contemporary style of custom designed Modern Ranch home. The Custom Ranch Modern type is mentioned and described in the San Diego Modernism Context. The double car garage is attached and extends out to the south. The horizontal design and massing contain wide eaves with large overhangs with continuous exposed roof beams. Some of the most significant architecturally defining elements of this Mid-Century Modern house are set back and face the side facing entryway and rear patio area. The home has the character defining features indicative of the Contemporary and Modern Ranch styles. Contemporary features include a large, low pitched front facing gabled roof with wide overhanging eaves, large exposed roof beams, broad expanses of uninterrupted vertical wooden wall board surfacing, integrated garage and a somewhat obscured and downplayed entryway. These features are all in keeping with the Contemporary Modern architectural style.

  • Study of Chicano/Mexican Architecture in the Modern World
1 CHICANO/MEXICAN ARCHITECTURE Study of Chicano/Mexican Architecture in the Modern World Nicholas R. Law ANTH 166-77 June 1, 2014 2 CHICANO/MEXICAN ARCHITECTURE Abstract Although sometimes overlooked, Latino/Chicano architecture is all around us and continues to influence modern structures today. From early century megalithic architecture to the baroque cathedrals and even to the Modernism movement, Latino architects have played a large role in establishing beautiful works of art and attributing to modern day architecture. In this paper I will address the influence Chicanos have had on modern day architecture. Tracing back to the Stone Age, Latino architecture can be discovered, though primitive it shows some of the earliest examples of their designs. As time progressed, Latino architecture was influenced by the Romans, Moors, Celts and even natives such as the Aztecs and Mayans as well as many others, spawning the Romanesque, Mudejar, Puuc, Castros and other styles that were practiced and still are practiced by Chicano/Latino architects. Chicano architecture is prevalent in the U.S. in areas such as the Olvera Street Market in LA and Old town in San Diego and in many cities and towns across North America. Using published works on architecture and architectural magazines, I will explain the influence Chicano/Latino architecture has on the U.S. and beyond. Keywords: attributing, discovered, published and influence 3 CHICANO/MEXICAN ARCHITECTURE Chicano/Mexican Architecture int the Modern World Mexican architecture has been around since the megalithic structures can be discovered, today Mexican and Chicano architecture can be observed worldwide. The influence of Chicano/Latino architects on modern architecture is very prevalent, as is Mexican architecture throughout history.
