THE CITY AND DESTINATION

With a population of nearly one million, San Jose is the third largest city in , the largest in Northern California, and the 10th largest city in the U.S. Its skyline is burgeoning, dotted with handsome hotels, one of America's premier city hall buildings (a gleaming Richard Meier design), a raft of new residential high-rises---with still more towers in the pipeline. Yet, there's still a small town charm about the place.

San Jose is the hub to Northern California, located a convenient 45-minute drive south of San Francisco and an hour northeast of Monterey, the capitol of is edged by oak-dotted hills and set in a wide valley that was once blanketed with orchards. Home to the largest concentration of technology expertise in the world with more than 6,600 technology companies, employing more than 254,000 people, San Jose boasts a Mediterranean climate (300 days of sunshine annually), with temperatures varying from an average of 50º in January to an average of 70º in July, and a mean annual rainfall of 14.4 inches. The highest elevation is 4,372 feet at Copernicus Peak on Mt. Hamilton (near ) in the Diablo Range; the lowest elevation is sea level.

There's a new energy to San Jose these days—the sense of something big underway beyond technology news—lots of growth, a swinging arts scene, trendy nightlife and shopping, and an awesome array of recreation. It's the kind of buzz that happens when a town has the wind at its back, and the combined momentum of growth and innovation apart from its Silicon Valley heritage. Crowned as one of the nation’s safest big cities in America, San Jose is both clean and safe. In addition, MostLivable.org ranked San Jose among the Top 10 Most Livable Large Cities in a recent survey. San Jose is a city proud of the cultural and ethnic diversity of its population and workforce, and the rich cultural identity of its many neighborhoods (more than 40 languages are spoken) is mirrored in the many flavors of its shops, restaurants, and festivals—from the San Jose Jazz Festival, Zero1 (a festival where technology and arts converge) to Viva Fest, San Jose’s International Mariachi Festival. The museums are nationally recognized and the strong economy supports everything from opera, symphony, children’s musical theater, comedy, concerts, Broadway shows, and championship sports teams.

The cityscape is made for walkers, dotted with colorful paseos and sheltered alleys. And, the glories of nature are never far—you can walk for miles in the green corridors of the Coyote Creek or systems or choose between urban and mountain parks of the 45,000-acre Santa Clara County Parks system.

No doubt about it, there's plenty to do in San Jose, from The Tech Museum to Great America, plus shopping at premier , dining, world-class golf and festival hopping. Within a 15 to 45-minute drive, you can be hiking in redwoods or strolling the charming towns of Saratoga, Los Gatos, or Palo Alto. Or on a daytrip, you can be roaming gleaming beaches, wineries, skiing at Tahoe, or other fun attractions in Santa Cruz or Monterey.

Transportation: An average of 122 daily flights brings approximately 23,000 passengers daily to the conveniently located Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC). The airport is just five minutes from downtown, and since everything downtown is within walking distance – from hotels and meeting facilities to hip culture, restaurants and nightclubs-you can get to your destination fast and you’ll be able to stop and smell the roses and other flowers that grow all about downtown in the parks and streetscape.

Neighborhoods: No city is a singular neighborhood, and in San Jose there are many varieties of lifestyles, work and play areas within the south bay anchor. While not every neighborhood is listed, such as suburban living areas like Almaden Valley and North/, major areas that provide unique opportunities to those visiting our city are listed. They include Downtown, Rose Garden, Japan Town, Willow Glen, Little Saigon and West San Jose. In addition, information is listed on Los Gatos and Campbell, neighborhoods that offer their own unique historical experiences.

Nightlife and the Lively Arts: San Jose has it all, from plays to Broadway, concerts, ballet, opera, children’s musical theater and symphony. The first-rate entertainment is just as innovative as the high tech companies nearby. Yet ticket prices are a screaming bargain compared to other cities. Plenty of convenient parking means theatergoers avoid the parking hassles so aggravating in other cities. And the highlights of the dining and arts scene are packed into a walkable cluster, making exploration, or an evening out, easy. Broadway San Jose, a Nederlander production, offers musical experiences just off New York’s Broadway. Nearby, there's the more intimate stages of the City Lights Theater, San Jose Stage Company, The Improv Comedy Club and ComedySportz. The glittering California Theatre is a symbol of the city's commitment to its history and the arts; home to Opera San José, , Symphony Silicon Valley, Cinequest Film Festival, and many touring companies. Other venues, like the Center for the Performing Arts, home of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, the home to A-list concerts, Montgomery Theater home to Children’s Musical Theater San Jose, the largest children’s musical theater in the U.S., and HP Pavilion showcase the San Jose Sharks, concerts and more.

Downtown, the Tech Museum of Innovation is home to the ultimate immersive movie experience and Northern California's only domed IMAX screen. Its themed galleries explore the fun side of innovation, the Internet, the human body, and exploration—so Silicon Valley. In the giant, purple Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose—ranked by Child Magazine as one of the top ten children's museums in the nation— kids explore how things work in two floors of interactive fun in exhibit areas with names like the Secrets of Circles and WaterWays. The high tech of old Egypt—giant sphinxes, a garden, and a temple—is on display at Rosicrucian Park, home to Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium. This is the West Coast's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts and home to mummy exhibits and a replicated tomb. Anchoring the fine arts scene, the showcases a range of the newest frontiers of art. The South of First Arts Area (SoFA) ripples with nightlife, from a local wine bar, Singlebarrel, a hidden gem of a bar that is a nod to the prohibition days, to South First Billiards. SofA cultural offerings provide vivid colors splashing across the walls of galleries like MACLA (Movimiento De Arte Y Cultura Latino Americana), contemporary tapestries at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and cutting-edge works at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and Anno Domini.

Exciting Attractions: You won’t find the usual suspects of syrupy sweet theme parks which treat you like an ATM machine here. But, you will find lots of fun, action and value-packed parks nearby such as Great America, Raging Waters and . And other family friendly gems such as the Tech Museum, the seriously weird and cool or the unusual Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium. Minutes from is the Santa Cruz Mountain wine country, recently noted by Wine Spectator as “the most underappreciated appellation in the world.” If you want great wines, knowledgeable vintners, friendly and accessible tasting rooms, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara County wineries are the way to go.

Sports Scene: If you like to go a little tribal, San Jose is a fierce sports town with plenty of recreational and spectator sports to root for. Perhaps the most passionate fans are the Sharks, who paint themselves teal and blue and intimidate the heck out of teams who dare challenge them in the HP Pavilion’s Shark Tank. San Jose is made for outdoor action, including 150 parks and gardens for strolling or running, cool mountain roads perfect for biking, and 15 local and championship golf courses great for relaxing or closing the deal.

Sports help bring a sense of pride and spirit to a city, and San Jose boasts some of the region's most successful pro teams: the National Hockey League's San Jose Sharks and the Major League Soccer team the San Jose Earthquakes. These aren't old-school kind of teams; they're hip, irreverent, and forward-looking, which kind of describes the fans they draw. Santa Clara is building a new San Francisco 49ers stadium (just 6 miles from San Jose). The Oakland A's are currently in discussions to relocate to San Jose. San Jose is home to a roster of major league sporting events, such as the Amgen Tour of California and the San Jose Giants, a family friendly way to experience baseball.

Sizzling Shopping and Dining: Shopping is another competitive sport in San Jose, and no place in the Bay area has more diverse offerings. Whether you want the trendiest gear from Santana Row, fresh finds at urban farmer’s markets or amazing steals at our nearby outlets and flea markets, you can do as much or as little damage to your card as you like. Opened in 1960, with only 20 sellers, the , today covers 120 acres and is the largest open-air flea market in America. With the flavors and hues of a Mexican mercado (market) and the bargains of a garage sale, it's one of the best shows in town.

San Jose is said to boast the largest population of Vietnamese-Americans of any U.S. city, and you can sample the spicy flavors of this culture at some 200 stores in a unique Vietnamese business area along Story Road near Senter Road. One of the most intriguing shopping areas is Japantown, along Jackson Street centered at 4th Street. It's one of three remaining Japantown's in the U.S. The restaurants offer plenty of choices, from sushi to Korean BBQ. From May to the second Friday in December, The Downtown Farmer's Market at is hopping on Fridays from 10-2. Just three miles from the city center, Santana Row has so much energy and high-end fashion, it has been called "Silicon Valley's answer to Rodeo Drive". True, the Row attracts a young, hip crowd, but actually, the Row has broader appeal, with some 70 shops, dozens of restaurants, spas, and a chic hotel, blended with luxury residences. There's a really broad mix of retailers on the Row; luxury shops like Gucci, Kate Spade and LuLu Lemon, plus more affordable ones (Crate & Barrel, H&M, Chico's). The newest shopping and dining experience to join San Jose’s A-list is San Pedro Square Marketplace. Built after Seattle’s Pike’s Place, San Pedro Square Marketplace offers dining, shopping and entertainment located in downtown’s San Pedro Square.

San Jose's dining scene just keeps getting hotter. Foodies from the South Bay to the Peninsula, who once thought they had to travel to San Francisco for superior dining, now have an amazing array of choices right here. Downtown boasts everything from the innovative cuisine of Arcadia Modern American Steakhouse, helmed by food legend Michael Mina, to the inexpensive, yet excellent comfort food of the Sonoma Chicken Coop and the new, multinational San Pedro Square Bistro & Wine Bar. And, for those on a budget, the humble burrito is elevated to an art form at local faves like La Victoria. Also downtown, wine lovers can learn as they taste at The Perfect Finish or The San Jose Wine Center, part of J. Lohr's downtown San Jose winery. And nearby San Jose districts like Willow Glen, and towns like Campbell, Los Gatos, and Saratoga offer more dining options.

There's more haunting fun at the 160-room Winchester Mystery House, the spooky Victorian mansion created by the Winchester Rifle heiress. One great natural getaway sits just minutes from downtown San Jose—rugged, 720-acre .

But, if you just want to kick back and relax with the family, take a Sunday morning stroll through —the grande dame of the city's parks. Its 176 acres include the Japanese Friendship Garden, the History Park, and Happy Hollow Park and Zoo.

ABOUT TEAM SAN JOSE

Team San Jose, Inc., a public benefit corporation 501c6, was formed in December 2003 in response to the City of San Jose’s Request for Proposals (RFP) for the management and operations of the convention center and other cultural facilities in downtown San Jose and at the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau. The facilities included in the contract are the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the Civic Auditorium, Parkside Hall, South Hall, the Center for Performing Arts, California Theatre and the Montgomery Theatre. Team San Jose is an economic driver in Silicon Valley, evolving into a $20 million company with more than 900 full and part-time/on-call employees.

Team San Jose (TSJ) is a new breed of destination marketing organization (DMO) that is changing the face of the meetings industry. The organization serves as a one-stop shop for customers’ meetings and events, resulting in saving the planner time, energy and resources.

Instead of handing you off to other organizations once you book a meeting – as most cities do – Team San Jose (TSJ) does it all, from housing, event services and customized food and beverage menus to permits, marketing support and technically savvy special events. It’s no wonder 98% of planners say they’d return to San Jose in the future.

Whether you’re a small corporate or citywide group, San Jose offers the ease of navigating the destination like you were booking and operating in a big box hotel property. This saves the event planner valuable time, energy and resources, so they can focus on the success of the meeting. Coupled with our walkable and exciting Downtown, planners don’t need to worry about group transportation – a plus for planners and delegates visiting San Jose.

Unlike other CVBs, Team San Jose manages the main meeting venues, ensuring quality control of your experience from beginning to end. In addition to managing the San Jose Convention Center, TSJ manages the San Jose Civic (home to a variety of shows, concerts, corporate rentals, family shows, special events), Center for the Performing Arts (home to Broadway and ballet), California Theatre (home to opera and symphony), Montgomery Theater (home to Children’s Musical Theater), Parkside Hall and South Hall. Their close relationships with local hotels, arts groups, and labor means you’ll have the best packages and services from them as well.

San Jose was the first Northern California destination to receive the Destination Marketing Accreditation Program (DMAP) accreditation. DMAP is an independent international body defining quality and performance issues in destination marketing and recognizing DMOs that meet or exceed industry standards, distinguishing those official destination marketing organizations that are committed to industry excellence. The DMAP program is powered by Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI).

Technology/High-Tech: Since it wouldn’t be Silicon Valley without plugging into the latest technology, the City of San Jose launched free Wi-Fi Downtown for visitors and residents to enjoy – including those attending an event at the convention center. As one of the most technologically advanced meeting destinations in the U.S., San Jose is an attractive convention hot spot, delivering state-of- the-art network systems and infrastructure in local Convention and Cultural facilities.

F&B: To continue streamlining service and value, Team San Jose offers an in-house culinary team who serve up customized menus. Their unconventionally good cuisine features local, often organic, ingredients. They can also offer composting, compostable plateware/silverware and more for green meetings.

Coming Fall 2013: Bigger, Better Convention Center: The San Jose Convention Center is undergoing a major revitalization reflective of the destination’s innovative spirit. In the fall of 2013, the center – which will remain open and 100 percent operational throughout the project – will complete a $130 million expansion and renovation, adding 125,000 square feet of flexible ballroom and meeting space to the center’s existing 425,000 square feet. After the project concludes, the center will offer 550,000 square feet of total usable space for meetings, conventions and events.

On opening day in April 1927, many Hollywood stars came to celebrate this lavish 1,122- seat theater, known today as one of the best preserved examples of late 1920s motion picture houses in the United States. It’s no surprise that this historical masterpiece is home to Opera San Jose and Symphony Silicon Valley.

Montgomery Theatre is a more intimate venue with all the production capabilities of a major performance venue. When not in use as the permanent home of the San Jose Children’s Musical Theater, largest, oldest and award-winning children’s musical theater in the U.S., the Montgomery Theater hosts a variety of cultural and performing arts events.
