POSITION OVERVIEW PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SEARCH TEAM SAN JOSE (SAN JOSE, CA) THE CITY AND DESTINATION With a population of nearly one million, San Jose is the third largest city in California, the largest in Northern California, and the 10th largest city in the U.S. Its skyline is burgeoning, dotted with handsome hotels, one of America's premier city hall buildings (a gleaming Richard Meier design), a raft of new residential high-rises---with still more towers in the pipeline. Yet, there's still a small town charm about the place. San Jose is the hub to Northern California, located a convenient 45-minute drive south of San Francisco and an hour northeast of Monterey, the capitol of Silicon Valley is edged by oak-dotted hills and set in a wide valley that was once blanketed with orchards. Home to the largest concentration of technology expertise in the world with more than 6,600 technology companies, employing more than 254,000 people, San Jose boasts a Mediterranean climate (300 days of sunshine annually), with temperatures varying from an average of 50º in January to an average of 70º in July, and a mean annual rainfall of 14.4 inches. The highest elevation is 4,372 feet at Copernicus Peak on Mt. Hamilton (near Lick Observatory) in the Diablo Range; the lowest elevation is sea level. There's a new energy to San Jose these days—the sense of something big underway beyond technology news—lots of growth, a swinging arts scene, trendy nightlife and shopping, and an awesome array of recreation. It's the kind of buzz that happens when a town has the wind at its back, and the combined momentum of growth and innovation apart from its Silicon Valley heritage. Crowned as one of the nation’s safest big cities in America, San Jose is both clean and safe. In addition, MostLivable.org ranked San Jose among the Top 10 Most Livable Large Cities in a recent survey. San Jose is a city proud of the cultural and ethnic diversity of its population and workforce, and the rich cultural identity of its many neighborhoods (more than 40 languages are spoken) is mirrored in the many flavors of its shops, restaurants, and festivals—from the San Jose Jazz Festival, Zero1 (a festival where technology and arts converge) to Viva Fest, San Jose’s International Mariachi Festival. The museums are nationally recognized and the strong economy supports everything from opera, symphony, children’s musical theater, comedy, concerts, Broadway shows, and championship sports teams. The cityscape is made for walkers, dotted with colorful paseos and sheltered alleys. And, the glories of nature are never far—you can walk for miles in the green corridors of the Coyote Creek or Los Gatos Creek trail systems or choose between urban and mountain parks of the 45,000-acre Santa Clara County Parks system. No doubt about it, there's plenty to do in San Jose, from The Tech Museum to Great America, plus shopping at premier Santana Row, dining, world-class golf and festival hopping. Within a 15 to 45-minute drive, you can be hiking in redwoods or strolling the charming towns of Saratoga, Los Gatos, or Palo Alto. Or on a daytrip, you can be roaming gleaming beaches, wineries, skiing at Tahoe, or other fun attractions in Santa Cruz or Monterey. Transportation: An average of 122 daily flights brings approximately 23,000 passengers daily to the conveniently located Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC). The airport is just five minutes from downtown, and since everything downtown is within walking distance – from hotels and meeting facilities to hip culture, restaurants and nightclubs-you can get to your destination fast and you’ll be able to stop and smell the roses and other flowers that grow all about downtown in the parks and streetscape. Neighborhoods: No city is a singular neighborhood, and in San Jose there are many varieties of lifestyles, work and play areas within the south bay anchor. While not every neighborhood is listed, such as suburban living areas like Almaden Valley and North/South San Jose, major areas that provide unique opportunities to those visiting our city are listed. They include Downtown, Rose Garden, Japan Town, Willow Glen, Little Saigon and West San Jose. In addition, information is listed on Los Gatos and Campbell, neighborhoods that offer their own unique historical experiences. Nightlife and the Lively Arts: San Jose has it all, from plays to Broadway, concerts, ballet, opera, children’s musical theater and symphony. The first-rate entertainment is just as innovative as the high tech companies nearby. Yet ticket prices are a screaming bargain compared to other cities. Plenty of convenient parking means theatergoers avoid the parking hassles so aggravating in other cities. And the highlights of the dining and arts scene are packed into a walkable cluster, making exploration, or an evening out, easy. Broadway San Jose, a Nederlander production, offers musical experiences just off New York’s Broadway. Nearby, there's the more intimate stages of the City Lights Theater, San Jose Stage Company, The Improv Comedy Club and ComedySportz. The glittering California Theatre is a symbol of the city's commitment to its history and the arts; home to Opera San José, Ballet San Jose, Symphony Silicon Valley, Cinequest Film Festival, and many touring companies. Other venues, like the Center for the Performing Arts, home of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley, the San Jose Civic home to A-list concerts, Montgomery Theater home to Children’s Musical Theater San Jose, the largest children’s musical theater in the U.S., and HP Pavilion showcase the San Jose Sharks, concerts and more. The institution is a tribute to San Jose's Vietnamese population, the largest outside Vietnam. Downtown, the Tech Museum of Innovation is home to the ultimate immersive movie experience and Northern California's only domed IMAX screen. Its themed galleries explore the fun side of innovation, the Internet, the human body, and exploration—so Silicon Valley. In the giant, purple Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose—ranked by Child Magazine as one of the top ten children's museums in the nation— kids explore how things work in two floors of interactive fun in exhibit areas with names like the Secrets of Circles and WaterWays. The high tech of old Egypt—giant sphinxes, a garden, and a temple—is on display at Rosicrucian Park, home to Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium. This is the West Coast's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts and home to mummy exhibits and a replicated tomb. Anchoring the fine arts scene, the San Jose Museum of Art showcases a range of the newest frontiers of art. The South of First Arts Area (SoFA) ripples with nightlife, from a local wine bar, Singlebarrel, a hidden gem of a bar that is a nod to the prohibition days, to South First Billiards. SofA cultural offerings provide vivid colors splashing across the walls of galleries like MACLA (Movimiento De Arte Y Cultura Latino Americana), contemporary tapestries at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and cutting-edge works at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and Anno Domini. Exciting Attractions: You won’t find the usual suspects of syrupy sweet theme parks which treat you like an ATM machine here. But, you will find lots of fun, action and value-packed parks nearby such as Great America, Raging Waters and Gilroy Gardens. And other family friendly gems such as the Tech Museum, the seriously weird and cool Winchester Mystery House or the unusual Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium. Minutes from downtown San Jose is the Santa Cruz Mountain wine country, recently noted by Wine Spectator as “the most underappreciated appellation in the world.” If you want great wines, knowledgeable vintners, friendly and accessible tasting rooms, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara County wineries are the way to go. Sports Scene: If you like to go a little tribal, San Jose is a fierce sports town with plenty of recreational and spectator sports to root for. Perhaps the most passionate fans are the Sharks, who paint themselves teal and blue and intimidate the heck out of teams who dare challenge them in the HP Pavilion’s Shark Tank. San Jose is made for outdoor action, including 150 parks and gardens for strolling or running, cool mountain roads perfect for biking, and 15 local and championship golf courses great for relaxing or closing the deal.
