A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr
A Biography of Doc Watson by Dan Miller Edited by Steve Carr Introduction Over the past fifty years the guitar has had a very powerful influence on American music. Predominantly a rhythm instrument at the turn of the century, the guitar began to step out of the rhythm section in the 1930’s and 40’s and has maintained a dominant presence in every form of music from rock, to folk, to country, bluegrass, blues, and old- time. While Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and other pop icons of the 50’s and 60’s certainly played a large role in bolstering the guitar’s popularity, the man who has had the deepest, most enduring, and most profound influence on the way the acoustic flat top guitar is played as a lead instrument in folk, old-time, and bluegrass music today is Arthel "Doc" Watson. To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson records in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is a legend. However, Doc’s influence extends far beyond the small niche of guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero. To be recognized as a "national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, honored with the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton, and given an honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina calls for being more than a fine musician and entertainer. -

Listening, Learning, and Connoisseurship in Old-Time Music
CATCHING THE “WILD NOTE”: LISTENING, LEARNING, AND CONNOISSEURSHIP IN OLD-TIME MUSIC Joseph Edward Decosimo A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of American Studies. Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Glenn Hinson Louise Meintjes Andrea Bohlman Bernard Herman Elizabeth Engelhardt © 2018 Joseph Edward Decosimo ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Joseph Edward Decosimo: Catching the “Wild Note”: Listening, Learning, and Connoisseurship in Old-time Music (Under the direction of Glenn Hinson) As we approach the century mark for audio recording projects that began documenting traditional music forms in the southern U.S., it is worth interrogating the profound ways that old commercial and field recordings shape contemporary performance practices and understandings of these genres, especially as copies of older recordings circulate widely and unexpectedly and accumulate new meanings. This project examines the ways that sound recordings and technologies mediate contemporary performance practices, aesthetics, and social relationships in the context of Old-time music, especially among Old-time practitioners in East Tennessee, a site long associated with the genre. An ethnography of listening, learning, and performance practices among expert Old-time musicians, this dissertation brings conversations about the splitting and circulation of sounds from their sources to bear on long-standing concerns about modes of transmission of traditional and local knowledge. Thinking about the transmission of traditional music as a process thoroughly imbricated with sound technologies yields new questions, stories, and understandings about Old-time music making and the study of expressive culture. -

Illustration © Kristina Tosic blind_2ed_final.indd 25 2/29/12 3:54 AM "If the wind and rain could play guitar, they would sound a lot like Doc Watson." - Greg Brown n a simple wooden stage in a newly-built elementary school auditorium in New York City's Greenwich Village, Doc Watson, a O handsome blue-eyed blind man with a sun-browned and craggy brow, wavy hair and worker's hands, sat on a stool in front of a crowd sang into the microphone at center stage, "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound," with a handful of other musicians gathered behind him, humming soft harmony. Only a few blocks from this 37-year-old bard and his borrowed guitar on the evening of March 25, 1961, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center had not yet been built in Battery Park. Doc Watson's version of "Amazing Grace" would travel around the world to land again in New York City forty years later in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, to be used as a salve and solace for an entire nation. A simple search of online videos of them set to the moving melody of "Amazing Grace." And memorial ceremonies each year are not complete without a bagpipe corps tolling the long, somber and majestic notes of the beloved hymn. Not unlike the bagpipes, Doc's singing that night was simple, straight, and true. He added no frills, displaying true piety and emotion as he shut his eyes tightly and sang the hymn's stanzas. -
