The first is frequently the most exciting. The Center for Arts and Technology at Governors State University brings that first time excitement here. For those of us affiliated with Governors State University and its most generous GSU Foundation, the planning and building of The Center brings to fruition our first major capital campaign. For those in the south metropolitan region, The Center is the first new theater for the area, giving us many first opportu- nities to come together and enjoy a wide variety of entertainment in a mag- nificent setting. Having The Center at the University will offer us many opportunities. In addition to the fine live entertainment, we will be able to broadcast world- wide through our satellite hookup. Corporations can host global meetings here or the Tokyo String Quartet can be beamed to a Harvey elementary school. In addition, bringing more people to campus will augment our already record 18 percent enrollment growth the past three years. It is all coming together quite wonderfully. We want to thank all who are here tonight for our "first" and all who made The Center a reality. We can all exhale now.

Paula Wolff President, Governors State University

From the Chair

On behalf of the board of directors, I welcome you to the Grand Opening of our marvelous, new Center for Arts and Technology at Governors State University, which is indeed the "crown jewel" of theatres on Chicago's Southland. In celebrating this very special occasion, I would like to pay special trib- ute to the hundreds of generous donors who gave so willingly over the years to make this Center a reality. Because of them, our community has a state- of-the-art facility which will play host to a myriad of high quality arts and entertainment programs which will delight us for years to come. The Center will be a place like no other. Future generations will have the opportunity to gather here for the finest of performing arts, popular attrac- tions, and educational activities. The Center's programming promises to appeal to audiences of all ages as well as a variety of tastes. Central to the success of The Center are our patrons, supporters, and friends and I look forward to seeing all of you at the outstanding programs planned for this inaugural season and for many seasons thereafter.

Performances on television and stages throughout the world have made Rich Little's name a synonym for flawless imitation. He is the undisputed master of mimiOcry, has gained international recognition as one of the most diversly gifted and popular per- formers in the entertainment business. Rich's extraordinary impressions are leg- endary for his superb comic timing and are perfected to the richest detail. Rich Little captures not only his subject's vocal characteristics, but also their physical features, facial expressions, and personal habits. His portrayals of personalities range from Bill Clinton to Kermit the Frog. His talents as an impressionist are also used in some very interesting ways. Over the years, he has dubbed the voices for stars who, because of unavailability, were not able to complete their film or television roles: , , Peter Sellers, Stacy Keach and , among them. Rich has been the television spokesperson for several nationally advertised products, and he has produced a number of taped telephone celebrity answer messages called "Phonies," a home video version of Charades, and several comedy videos, including "One's A Crowd," "Little Scams of Golf," and most recently, "Rich Little in Branson." Rich Little maintains one of the most rigorous schedules of personal appearances in the industry, taking him to such diverse audiences as his performance for the Prince and Princess of Wales, and to such entertainment capitals as , Atlantic City, Reno, Lake Tahoe, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Branson, MO. He still finds time to support various charities close to his heart, most notably as a spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Rich's live performances are both hilarious and evocative of nostalgic moments. Blending comedy and song, he mimics a number of singers including , Bing Crosby, Neil Diamond, and Tom Jones. His tributes to legends such as , John Wayne, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant are great favorites with his audiences. Rich has appeared with the leading symphony orchestras performing Prokofiev's sym- phonic fairy tale "Peter and the Wolf." In different voices, he explains the instruments of the orchestra as they represent characters from the story: as Peter, Dr. Ruth Westheimer as the twittering bird, and as the wolf. He began his concert format with the Boston Pops under the direction of conductor John Williams. He starred in his own weekly television series, "The Rich Little Show," on NBC. Past specials include "Rich Little's Washington Follies" on ABC, and "Rich Little's Christmas Carol" for Home Box Office. In "Christmas Carol" he played all the roles in the version of the Dickens' classic winning top prizes at the Monteaux Festival in Switzerland and gaining an Emmy Award in the United States. He has also starred in other programs for HBO, including, "The Great Pretenders," "Rich Little's Come Laugh With Me" and "Rich Little's Robin Hood" — a one-man show with Rich playing Groucho Marx as Robin Hood, Carol Channing as Maid Marian, and Richard Nixon as King Richard. Rich has hosted two syndicated television shows, "Making it Happen" and "You Asked For It," and has guest starred in several primetime series, including "Fantasy Island," "Murder, She Wrote," "CHiPs," and "MacGyver." He has appeared on count- less variety shows over the years, often hosting "The Tonight Show." His impres- sions of several U.S. Presidents were featured in the 1981 and 1985 televised inau- gural Gala for President Reagan. He was also a regular on the comedy series "Love on a Rooftop," "The John Davidson Show," "The Julie Andrews Hour," and "Kopykats," a popular series with impressions which Rich later adapted into a long-running Las Vegas stage show. Always interested in doing different things, Rich has played himself on a number of episodes of daytime TV's "The Young and the Restless," as well as NBC's "Santa Barbara." One of the highlights of Rich Little's career was an incident which occured during a nationally televised press conference from the White House in 1989. President Bush, who had become friendly with the entertainer through Rich's close association with President and Mrs. Reagan, gestured to the assembled media and said, "my goodness, I'd better watch these gestures. I'm beginning to look like Rich Little." For Canadian-born Rich Little, this compliment from the President of the United States was tremendous. Despite his longstanding popularity with U.S. Presidents and his renowned impres- sions of them, Richard Caruthers Little was born and reared in , . One of three sons of a prominent physician, Rich began doing impressions as a youngster, responding to his teachers' questions in their own voices. Teaming with a friend, he earned his first payment as an impressionist at the age of 17 when the pair won a talent contest on a Canadian television show called "Pick the Stars." That exposure led to appearances on variety programs throughout Canada until Rich went solo, becoming a successful disc jockey and host in Ottawa. In his early 20's he recorded his first album, "My fellow Canadians." It became the best-selling comedy album in the history of Canada and made him nationally famous imitating the prime ministers. Over the course of a decade, Rich worked as an actor in 40 productions with the Ottawa Little Theatre. In 1964, his friend, Mel Torme, intro- duced him to the American public on "," an appearance which led to many more guest-starring spots on television variety shows. Soon after, Rich decided to make the United States his home, although he is very much a favorite son of his native Canada. On the occasion of Ottawa's 150th anniver- sary, he was honored as one of its most famous citizens. In 1983, he received the Maple Leaf Distinguished Arts and Letters Award from the Canadian Club of New York. That same year, he was given what is perhaps the most cherished honor of his career when the named its expanded nursing facility the Rich Little Special Care Nursery. The new nursery was made possible by funds raised at a benefit concert by Rich and his friend, Frank Sinatra. Rich Little has twice received the Cleveland Ampry Award as Best Guest on a Television Talk Show and was named Comedy Star of the Year by the American Guild of Variety Artists. His Comedy album, "The First Family Rides Again" - a spoof of the Reagan family, who are among his biggest fans — was a million seller. Rich Little has written and produced nine comedy records during his career to date. Rich was recently cast to portray Johnny Carson in the upcoming HBO movie, "The Late Shift," which deals with the race to succeed Carson as host of "The Tonight Show." It is scheduled to air in January 1996. He is also planning a stage show which he hopes to be able to take to Broadway. In 1993, Rich met singer-actress-commedianne Jeannette Markey, who was hosting a show in Las Vegas. He was so impressed with her talents that he asked her to join his show, where she soon began to display her own natural talent for impressions. She has expanded her repertoire to some two dozen characters, enabling her to per- form both on her own and as a team with Rich to impersonate famous couples such as Burns and Allen, Kermit and Miss Piggy, and and Katherine Hepburn. Their professional relationship also became a personal one when they married in late 1994. When they aren't on the road, Rich (who has an 18-year-old daughter, Bria) and Jeanette live in Las Vegas.
